Has anyone ever stayed at the Greenbrier in WVa?

I live near Pittsburgh and will be celebrating our 20th anniversary this summer. I have heard of this place ... but when looking at the site ... it is quite pricey to stay there.

If anyone has stayed there, did you enjoy it and would recommend it .... and are there any discounts or discount codes that you know about (other than the packages they offer)?

Thanks in advance!

I have stayed at The Greenbrier twice. It is a very beautiful and historic resort! It is also VERY pricey. It is under new ownership as of this summer or fall I think. They are in the process of adding a casino to help increase revenue. I do not know how to get any deals right now. The last time I was there was with a conference. It would be a wonderful place to celebrate your anniversary. Good luck to you!:wizard:

I have been to the Greenbrier. It's extremely pricey and IMO, not worth the $. I realize it's your anniversary, but other than seeing the underground shelter that they built in the 60's to house the President and the 50 members of Congress and their families, there is not much to do there. If you are just looking to lounge around..then this is the place for you. I could think of a million other places to spend my 20th anniversary.

I was there back in the early 90's for a conference. DH was able to go too. This was before they opened the shelter to the public.

It is beautiful and peaceful. The food alone is amazing and when we went it was included in the price of the room. Is this still the case? If so, you would easily spend 50-60 per person for dinner if not waaayy more.

The grounds were beautiful. We were there in Feb. and it was cold and drizzly but we were able to walk around and enjoy the little shops, swim and several people used the spa.

If you want a quiet fancy place alone this is really good. If not, you might be disappointed.

Hey we're in Pittsburgh too and DH and I are celebrating our 20th this summer too. We're taking off to the Carribbean. Wanna join us? :)

We've stayed at Greenbrier and it is the most expensive place we've ever stayed if you include the room, food and activities. We loved it and it was a great experience. We would love to go back someday but have a hard time justifying the price. They do not discount at all, but offer some packages that include things, but do not offer much in a way of savings. For a 20th anniversary though, it would be a nice place to stay, even if just for one night.
Similar places to Greenbrier you might want to look: The Homestead in Virginia and if you are in PA, Nemacolin.

Seriously? Are they really adding a casino? That just totally kills it for me, not what I would want there...ugh.

A local guy bought it whenever the railroad company put it under bankruptcy. He guaranteed the debts but is wanted to add "tasteful gambling" or something to increase the revenue. I've heard it's underground and has certain table games and slot machines.

He hopes to bring it back up to the 5 start history it's had... but I'm with you. not sure gambling is the way to go. We shall see.

OP, I've never stayed.. but it's beautiful!

Please consider the Bedford Springs Resort located in Bedford, PA (maybe 2 hours east of Pittsburgh). It is a beautifully restored, old (150-200 years?) resort. They have 3 restaurants & the food is fabulous! They started as a resort due to the mineral springs on their property. The gorgeous indoor heated swimming pool is fed by one of the springs. They also have an outdoor swimming pool as well as a spa & golfcourse. There are trails leading to the various springs. Local attractions are antiquing, covered bridges and farmers markets. Very nice for a relaxing, slow-paced get-away.

We went in the dead of winter and had a wonderful time. It was beautiful in the mountains with all the snow. :)

Ohhh this sounds wonderful ... but just not in the budget. We were suppose to go back to Bermuda (that was where we honeymooned). Congrats on 20 years too!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. Please keep them coming. I will be looking into other options! :)

Thanks for this tip. I checked it out real quick and it looks delightful ...

We stayed there about 6 years ago at Christmas time. It was beautifully decorated. Top notch service! Great food, too. We loved it.

I don't know how they are doing now. Let's hope that they can bring it back to a sound financial footing without the casino...

We went the weekend we got engaged and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The bunker was still open at the time... I was thinking it was closed to even guests now, but I could be wrong. Service was absolutely top notch and we had a glorious weekend.
