I sent out for a new copy this week but am wondering if I should go ahead and get a passport.

Any thoughts would be helpful!!

Thank you!

Trish

I completely agree, get a passport. You shouldn't have too much trouble doing so, and once you do, that is the only form of identification you need to board the ship.

The times are changing and cruise lines are getting more strict. Many folks on here have recommended that if you have any concerns at all, than it would be best to get a passport.

In the near future, passports will be required in more and more cases where they were not required before, so it can't hurt to have one.

With a passport, you know you will not have problems when boarding.

Otherwise, you never know what might happen. I just dread the thought of getting to the ship and then finding out that there is a problem and not being allowed to board.

The only negative with the passport is the cost, but for that price you are buying peace of mind.

My husband has one of these. We elected to get a passport.

You should know that they are a real pain in the backend to replace - time consuming. So even if traveling on it isn't a problem - losing it might be.

I plan to get a passport, even thought I have a valid copy of my birth certificate. This is because a passport can be used as identification that birth certificates can not, such as talking to police, traveling, getting a driver's license, opening a checking account, etc. There will be no question I am an American citizen anywhere in the world.

In addition, it is easy to renew a passport for the rest of my life, I can keep by BC safely tucked away and not risk damage or loss, and if a passport is lost or stolen, I can get it renewed at an US consulate. Like in the military, they have my information on record, too.

Just my thoughts.

I had thought about getting a passport for years but kept thinking it would be a hassle. Last a couple of months before my cruise I decided to do it.

It was quick and simple.

Do it well in advance so you don't have to pay any rush charnges.

All the information you need is on the US Department of State Passport Services and Information Web Site

You can print out the forms, fill them out in advance, find out which local post offices can process your application and what hours they handle passport applications.

I agree with getting a passport. Most people don't know what a report of birth from abroad even is (although I have a brother and sister that have one and my daughter was born abroad). When my daughter was born they also gave us another raised seal certificate that looks like the birth certificate most americans see. I just have always used her passport for identification.
