Has anyone ever booked two seperate flight reservations for a family

What I am asking is I want to book my flights however if I book 2 of us I can get the fare lower by $40.00 and then I would have to book the other 2 at the higher price. Does this cause problems at check in? Has anyone ever done this, I would book one adult and one child in one reservation and then the same for the second.

I have done this when I've booked a trip using both frequent flier miles and purchasing airfare. The only problem we encountered was when they changed the type of aircraft we were on and they changed our seat assignments. My original ressies had us sitting 3 across one row and then one on the aisle across from the family. The new seats were split with two seats (window and middle) 4 rows in front of the others (middle and aisle). If the possibility of breaking up the family is not an issue for you, then go for the cheaper airfare.

We, too, had to book separately to use frequent flier miles. The agent suggested that I call the main number at some point and ask them to "link" all the different confirmation codes together. I think it will be fine that way.

This happened to us this summer with AirTran I could get 4 of us a lower cost and the other 3 a higher fare. We were all able to sit together because I did the online check in and selected our seats. On the way back we checked in early enough and were able to sit near each other.

I have done it , only problem as posted is when we had a change of aircraft, but I would do it to save money
