We are looking at renting a beach house in Waves, North Carolina..any info on the area would be great...Is it a nice place? How are the Beaches???? ect.

Thanks

We stayed at a campground in Waves last summer. This was my first trip to the Outer Banks so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I was very pleased. The beaches were beautiful, the waves on the ocean side are kind of rough so I put my smaller (not strong swimmers) kids in life jackets when we played in it. It wasn't crowded (this was mid-July).

We had a really rainy day and found plenty to do within a reasonable driving distance as well. It's not a commercialized area (you won't find Walmart or McDonalds), but there are alot of little gift shops and local places to eat. HTH.

Waves is a small village on the Outer Banks and like the person above said, it is not commercialized at all. The ocean there does tend to be a bit rougher than some other spots on the Atlantic Coast, (good for surfers) but most days are not so rough that kids can't get in the water.
My parents lived north of there in Kill Devil Hills in the 70's and 80's and Waves is like KDH was back then. Now KDH has plenty of fast food chains, and other places to spend money. In Waves, you will enjoy the beach and the quaint shops.
hope you have a great time!

Oh, I love the Waves area of the Outer Banks! It's the middle town of the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo area, though it all looks like one continuous town. We stayed in the St. Waves subdivision twice, in a house named Wavedancer. We also stayed off Colony Drive in Salvo, which is right near Waves.

I love the area since it's not too crowded, yet you aren't isolated in nowhereland either. Waves is mainly houses, with some small businesses on the main road (Route 13). We love the laid-back feel. We loved doing things like hanging out at the house on the multi-level porches; swimming or sitting on the beach; grilling up some fresh fish from the St. Waves fish market; riding my bike around town; and taking small trips up to Nags Head or down to the Hatteras Lighthouse. Ahhhh it's taking me back! :)

This upcoming summer, I am thinking of renting again in Waves, on Sea Isle Hills Drive. Love that whole area!

Been there many times. We actually stay in Rodanthe but the two run together. I choose Rodanthe because the ocean is more accessible-lower dunes, better views. You just can not beat this area. I've been lucky to have vacationed many places and this is the best spot for relaxing, scenery, family time and seafood I've found in the United States. Plenty to do or do nothing 'cept hang at the beach and fall into bed after a great dinner. Remember to eat at The Hot Tuna-lunch or early dinner and very casual. Also, skip the hot dog place- might be called Ernie's. Plan a day for Ocracoke Island-get there on the free car ferry from Hatteras Village-the beaches are remote, go on and on and there is almost no one there. Surf is great in Rodanthe, Waves, Frisco, Buxton!!! Are you renting oceanfront? Try Midgett and do an advanced search for oceanfront, 5 bdrm, Rodanthe, private pool....they have several that are a little smaller so possible in a high midrange price category. Sun Realty has a couple too. The house we normally rent just sold and will be popping up somewhere with a new name I'm sure. We actually booked a condo on the sound this year because we're staying two weeks and I wanted to have some spending money-seafood ain't cheap!!! The condos we use are really nice, called Sunset Resort and are in Rodanthe with Midgett Realty - 5 minute walk to the beach and over a low dune. Great views of sunset-right on the sound, large pool shared by 6 units, each unit has a soundfront hot tub.

I have always vacationed at Myrtle beach with my parents, but my DH convinced me to try outer banks last year, and I absolutly love it. You just drive your truck out on the beach, and no one is close. It's like you have your own private beach. Especially if you have 2 cars that are 4 wheel drive you can park them a little space a part and put a tent between them, and it it totally private. It is defiently private. If you don't stop before you cross the bridge everything is super expensive because it's so far out of the way for trucks to come. There is a food lion right after you cross the bridge, but once you get down into waves and salvo and so on it's all privatly owned stores and shops. It is very quaint I think, almost like something you would see in a movie. I don't know if this has been mentioned but the movie nights in rodanthe was actually filmed in Rodanthe, NC which is only about 15 mins from wave. If you are into be name stores and neon signs then you probubly won't like outer banks, but if you like family time, and relaxation it is exactly the place for you!!

Thanks so much for the replies. We have been tossing around a few areas and it seems as though Waves and Salvo are less expensive ( renting a large beach house). It sounds perfect for a week to relax but close enough to the touristy stuff.

Thanks again
