Harrient Miers - Pro or Con

Unhinged or not, it was refreshing. The opposition to Harriet Miers isn't because of her beliefs. It's because it is who she is, her thin resume, and how she is not qualified for the position of associate justice of the SC.

Pushing her religious beliefs or delight in collecting red, white, and blue M & M's is what happens when there's no "there" there.

And you're probably kidding about Bork's opposition to Harriet Miers, but be very careful with the argument: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." It causes people to lose focus.

I look at it the way Iran views Iraq, sans SCIRI. IOW, you might not like the outcome and be tempted to try to shape events, but right now, enemies are killing each other off and weakening themselves, and any perceived interference might alter that dynamic.

Heck, there's a logical argument that those like Meirs and Roberts are our worst nightmares. Bomb throwers like Scalia and Thomas tend to alienate their peers on the Court. The supporters of Scalia and Thomas in the Pharisaic right might enjoy reading their polemics, but ultimately they are counterproductive in terms of the advancement of that jurisprudence. Rehnquist was more effective in actually getting opinions favorable to the right wing written. Ultimately, there is no political support for Scalia and Thomas's jurisprudence - it is the ultimate judicial activism. The Pharisaic Right is a movement built on hatred and fear - screeds like Scalia's and paranoid delusions of betrayal are like warm waters to a cyclone - they feed off of it. But though they can pound the coast, submitting their theocratic visions to majority support is like running that same Hurricane over the Rockies - it gets shredded.

In any event, I love when the true face of the Pharisaic Right is revealed, because I think that only benefits the nation. I would like to see it get us back in power, but even if it only results in the rest of the GOP finally facing up to the deal it made with the Devil and purging the ranks, that would be progress.

What I find funny about Bork is that every time he speaks or writes he just confirms the wisdom of keeping him off the High Court. The man is Opus Dei.
