Harrah's or Bally's

never been to Vegas before and have a room at Harrah's booked for $123 for 3 nights. Just got an email from travelzoo and can get Bally's for $115. a little bit of savings but not knowing anything about either hotel I'm not sure which one to choose. which would you choose?

I think Harrah's is a bit nicer than Bally's.

Ballys location is a bit more central.
Ballys north tower rooms are nicer than Harrahs std room; South tower has dated furnishings but typically fantastic strip views. Ballys rooms are all some of the largest std rooms on the strip. (even if you book south tower you can typically get upgraded for free if there is availability)
Having stayed at both I'd give edge to Ballys. My room at Harrahs was nicely redone, but much smaller than my Ballys rooms. It also overlooked Carnival Court which was a BIG problem...I would come in after cocktails, put in earplugs, pull pillow over my head and I could STILL tell what song they were playing! If you are a light sleeper who goes to be early this would be very bad. (they played until 3AM this summer...)
I would not call Harrahs nicer than Ballys...I wouldn't call Ballys nicer than Harrahs either! Its a wash.
If this is your first Vegas trip I'd go w/ Ballys for central location.

Bally's, for all the reasons KKB said - I didn't stay at either, but I visited both last week. Judging just on the casinos and showrooms (and hosts in the showrooms), definitely Bally's. Harrah's seems like the poor relation, sort of tired and rundown.

In the past I would of said Bally's because of location, but since the strip has a lot more at the north end I might say Harrah's has the current edge.

But as far as the quality of the hotels it's fairly even. Though what PP mentioned about the noise from the dance area below some rooms, if you go to bed early, well early for vegas you want to be careful of where your room is.


PSAll vegas hotels guarantee the lowest rate so see what they offer, if you don't get a lower rate from them, call them.

I just stayed at Harrah's last June and the room was very nice -- close proximity to Imperial Palace for (somewhat) cheaper blackjack and Dealertainers, a $10/hand blackjack area where the dealers are top-notch celebrity look-alikes and rotate singing in the center stage (very small) but oh so fun and totally Vegas

Also next door to Harrah's is Casino Royale for cheap table play

thanks for the replies...DH talked to his friend that goes to Vegas a lot and he said Harrah's so that's where we'll stay. Fingers crossed that we don't get a room overlooking Carnaval Court though...with the time difference, I know I'll be in bed fairly early
