I could have sworn yesterday but it could have possibly been Monday I priced through SW for my family for airfare this summer and it was $1012. It actually has been that same rate for the past several weeks. Today it is $1556... Still trying to confirm dates with work so hadn't booked yet and really planned/hoped it would stay around the $1012. Back to the drawing board for us, will probably end up driving then. We had been going back and forth with driving and I even started a thread asking advice about driving from our area but in my gut I knew we would be happier flying if we could swing it. Not so sure now... Sorry had to vent...:scared1:

I noticed that they went up this morning from Kansas City to Orlando too but not quite that drastically, about $25 roundtrip. Really hoping they come down soon. We won't have the time to drive so it's not an option for us.

I've been looking at fares out of Indy & Louisville and either way, I'll be spending more this year on tickets one way than I did on round trip last year!

Typically when looking for flights rates are lower on Tues or Wednesdays mornings.

I priced SW for our September trip when they first came out and again on Monday. They were 119. I checked on Tuesday morning (and since) and they went up to 130!!!!!

I am guessing they will come back down, but we are planning on driving right now anyway!

That $11 difference is the amount they tacked on at the end of your purchase for taxes/fees. They now have to include it in the advertised price, so instead of advertising $119, it's advertised as $130.

However, a lot of fares, at least for the ones I'm tracking, have gone up, in addition to the "advertised price" change (which really isn't an increase in price).

Taxes are no longer being added on separate from base fares, so the price you are seeing is higher initially, but the same price you would have seen later after the taxes were added in.

This.

Very few airlines were showing you the price AFTER tax. Most would show you the pre-tax price. Not sure if this is your case or not. Either way, sorry to hear about these budget busting prices.

Either on Monday or Tuesday I went on Southwest and noticed the fares looked odd. They were increased by about$20 and the numbers were just strange. But then I went all the way to the end and the price ended up being the same that I had been looking at for the past month--$1012. So that was definitely the case of just the way the taxes were shown with the new law. But on Wednesday, they had increased dramatically and now the wannagetaway price is 195 which is normally 89, 99 or 105!!! Even when you pull up the low fare calendar and I was looking at different dates in both directions and 195 each way is the cheapest. Therefore it went up to $1556 for our family of 4. I haven't checked today but I just wanted to clarify that. I thought the new tax thing was the issue but its not just that. They increased the prices over all.

A new government rule that went into effect this week now requires that airlines must publish airfares showing all taxes and fee up front.

It use to be that you just saw the price of the airfare and when you went to purchase the ticket you were then given the actually price with all fee's and taxes included.

Did you look at airfares into Tampa? It is cheaper to fly into Tampa than into Orlando. It is a great airport. Not as much hustle and bustle like Orlando. It is an easy drive from Tampa to Disney. One hour and 15 minutes. We are flying into Tampa because it was $75 cheaper per person than Orlando. Then we are flying out of Orlando back home.
So if you already plan to rent a car for your trip and not relying on the ME I would highly suggest looking at airfares for Tampa.

Thank you for the tip about Tampa. I will definitely look into that.

OOH!!! Ok! So there's still hope that they will drop again!
