Hantavirus mess and traveling

the boat was a bit iffy looked like a ferry not a lux place,
A big difference between vessels with built for tough and rough conditions and vessels built without it. Or vessels reinforced later on.

This was a $80-$100 million dollar yacht we just saw in Costa Rica...it's owned by a billionaire and very lux but it was built for rough seas and the ability to go into more deep open waters

Consider how NatGeo vessels are or Quirk or Seabourn who has expedition ships (although the two expedition ships look more like regular cruise ships and have the same experience as the non-expedition ships in their fleet). That said the MV Hondius is more meant for expedition cruising without the same exact amenities that other ships may have (think lack of pools for example), not all expedition ships are that way, some operate exactly like other cruises but going to more remote or areas that require different vessels. You may just not be used to seeing smaller ships.

exposed during a pre cruise bird watching excursion at a landfill. Incubation period is weeks
They are not sure that is the place and the landfill and specific area has pushed back heavily on this stating no cases have been found in their area since 1996 when they started monitoring it and they aren't allowed within the fencing area of the landfill, the incubation period not matching, etc. It could be a point of origin, but is not fact nor has any factual data to ascertain it it. This is one where I think a bit more caution should be utilized in stating things. We don't want to tell the OP to not just believe anything they see or to do more looking into things only to state things that have just been rumored, presumed or otherwise without evidence either.

Also Ushuaia is the most common starting point for Antarctica cruises (also Chilean fjords) and it's an incredibly popular destination, while doubtful that many passengers headed for cruises in that region are doing bird watching near a landfill ahead of the cruise it would also stand that if it was in that region in the last 30 years that more cases and outbreaks would have stood the chance to occur. A wait and see is good here because if indeed it was at a landfill as the origin point it would be of large consequence to that region.

I'm not paying any attention at all to WHO, they were such a menace with Covid - lesson learned.

I would like The US to step up for Americans and if the Feds are too twitchy maybe some different State's with a lot of travelers and tourists that visit will do so. I know Massachusetts went it's one way with some vaccination issues this past winter.
If you are that nervous, cancel. Unless you plan to pick up rat poop, or go to a place where rats are running rampant, you don't need to worry. It's more likely your plane will crash on the way to Spain. And MA didn't do any vaccinations over the winter or have issues. There is nothing for the feds to do! They are aware and have said they will monitor the situation.

Wash your hands a lot and wear a mask if you are unsure of where you are staying. That should be all you need to avoid this virus.

You are going to have a real challenge finding actual facts if you disregard information from WHO and the CDC.

I’d be more worried about energy lockdowns
This too, before the whole virus thing I suggested she scope out a hotel in her airport city where she could stay if the plane gets stranded from lack of fuel.

So the official response is there is no such thing unless a person was on the boat or in the plane, reads like a note put out by a High School about germs from wrestling matts.

I imagine there will be more to come, either that or maybe some State Health Depts or US Medical Schools will release info.

At least JH, I hope it stays still in Spain too

14 Spanish citizens, hope they are in quarantine like the US did in I think it Nebraska

I could give two rats about Hanta(no pun intended). Cancelled Flights slightly concerned. I'm not really up to date on Europes fuel situation, but I do know European airlines have been cancelling and consolidating flights. I do have a trip to Europe planned for the Summer.

There is information and guidelines on the CDC website. You can choose to read and follow it or ignore it. Are you wanting a more scientific approach to the hantavirus? There is probably a lot more in-depth information but it's best to keep it simple and straightforward so it's easily digestible to the general public.

Here in AZ, there's usually a couple of hanta virus cases per year. In 2025, there were 2 cases and both people died. The rare cases are usually in northern AZ, around the Grand Canyon national park area. Hanta virus also shows up in NM (it killed Gene Hackman's wife in NM) and sometimes in Yosemite National Park in CA. But when the Yosemite cases occur, it's usually in a tent campground, not in other type of lodging.

I think one's risk of contracting it is quite low. It is NOT spread like the common cold or norovirus. You either need close direct contact with droppings of infected rodents OR you need repeated very close contact with someone infected with it AND the infected person has active symptoms.

Side note: Why in the world would somebody go on a bird watching expedition at a trash dump? What the heck.

I'll tell ya one thing I'm never doing...going on a cruise.

It seems like you've already decided to be worried about it, and you will disregard any statement to the contrary from the agencies meant to provide guidance, so I don't know what further you need ... just cancel any travel and stay home. Problem solved.

Personally this is not in any way affecting my current summer travel plans. If I were leaving on a trip today I would be unconcerned. If the situation changes or more information becomes available, I'll evaluate at the time.
