As for missing goals, most of the people I was following who had a goal for that race didn't make it, so don't feel too bad that. I had a rough Chicago last year, but it's just part of the live and learn experiences of marathon running. Just looking at the weather data online, the humidity looked to be high even as the temps weren't as bad as last year. I'm curious how the conditions felt to you actually running on the course, and how much of a factor you think weather was. Looking at my own results, I definitely do poorly in warmer temperatures. All my PRs were set at ~40F, give or take 5 degrees, and that seems to be my sweet spot.
That hotel is wonderful looking! I'll have to remember that for future race-cations/date nights.
Agree, 8 marathons is impressive!! And those shoes...![]()
Did your Nike merch deliver yet? I ordered the jacket and a dri-fit shirt. Got tracking on both, delivered today!!! So now I can model for my recap...which I swear is coming tonight!
Congrats on finishing. Sorry we did not meet up. Damn lightening. Will definitely attempt to hit those meets at Disney in January. I don’t post much but follow along.
Wow! 8 marathons! That’s amazing! Your hotel looks beautiful. Super fun you that you ran into Billy and roxymama! Anxiety is the WORST!!!!!
I can carry a lot of tension in my shoulders/neck on long runs (something I'm working on!), so I can feel the pain you were in... I am so sorry that happened! When you run a bajillion marathons like you have, unfortunately every race probably can't be great, but it still stinks. It sounds like there were still plenty of positives (shoes, dis-friends, parts of the race, Chicago!) to make the weekend good though!
Thank you and I wish we'd had the chance to meet as well. And a HUGE congrats to you!!!
Way to finish! I feel your pain. I’ve had runs where I felt the same way you described and some that I didn’t even show up to! I’m in a rut with the mental aspect of running and decided that “A” races and chasing PRs may not be my thing. Maybe I’ve already peaked? I’m now trying to enjoy training and pacing friends. Maybe one day I can be paced to a PR? You are so lucky to run with your best friend!!! I find running with someone has helped me tremendously! Thanks for sharing your story even if it’s not the way you planned.
So ... I know I said I wasnt going to talk about my race, but ... this is exactly what happened to me last week. After the portapotty stop I saw how far behind I was and tried to push myself to catch up (even though I would probably have been fine if I had stayed on plan, since my plan was to try to come in a few minutes ahead of goal), but in my case my body (or possibly my brain) just wouldn't do it. So I can definitely relate to that. I wish I had some advice or insight to share, but my plan to avoid this in the future is to just not pee during races, which probably doesnt help. I can offer lots of sympathy and commiseration, though .... it's tough when you have a goal and you dont hit it. It's tough when one thing goes wrong during a race and it spirals from there. At the end of the day, sometimes all you can do is keep moving forward and hope the next race is better.
Congrats on surviving your 8th marathon and finishing despite having a really tough day!
Thank you. I think we are both doing the mouse challenge (10k and marathon), best challenge out there with the sleep in on Saturday, in January I plan to meet up. Come out of lurkdom.
Also wanted to say your story is very inspiring. I did not know it so a big congrats to you!
