Just wondering what type of hand luggage is allowed on Virgin flights. I was thinking of getting one of those pull along wheelie Disney suitcases for my DD for the plane, full of activities, travel games etc but wondered if it would be too big for the overhead locker. Would a rucksack be better?

Hi Catherine
I have one of the Buzz/Woody ones for my DS (nearly 3) when we go and yes they will fit in the overhead compartment.
I am only going to take an across the body bag for myself to keep the hand luggage down as no doubt it will be me or my DH pulling it along.

We have took the said cases on flights to Spain with the most stringent airline Ryanair. If you can get one on board with them you can get them on board with anyone.

Ours have Princess cases. They are totally perfect for flights for the kids.

We took DD's princess case on with us back in June and we flew with Virgin. Alot of people with small children had these cases. Next year myself and my MIL are going to get one each too when were over there :) The Minnie ones are great.

Kids in Economy or PE are allowed one piece of hand luggage, upto 6kg in weight and must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. In upper they are allowed two pieces of hand luggage, no more than 16kg in total.

I hope my kids don't read this as I don't allow them to take a bag!! I pack all their toys/mags/sweets etc in our hand luggage and then when they board the flight and get their Virgin back pack I hand the bits and pieces over a few at a time, just to pass the flight.

DD uses her Belle s/case, however the first time we went when she was 3 she wasn't really tall enough to pull the case properly without dragging the bottom of the case along the ground & wrecking it!

We saw a lot of little ones with the cases. Most of them (bless) couldn't manage them, no matter how hard they tried to pull them. Parents ended up carrying them.

There is one disadvantage of the wheely bag vs a rucksack and that is that
to get stuff out of it you really need to get it down from the overhead and
open it up and then rummage. Once it is open rummaging is easy, since it
is not very deep. However, it is hard to rummage with it still in the overhead
bin, unlike a rucksack. This also works as an advantage too - once out there
is less "stuff" sitting on top of what you're after.

Also, it's much harder to overfill one of those wheely bags, they bulge a little
and then you can't get much more in and the zip shut. A rucksack can be more
easilly over filled.

:) Chris.

My son takes one of the small wheelie rucksack thingies, always puts it under the seat in front so we don't have the rummaging problem (and it is a problem for 5foot nothing me) and carries it as a backpack whilst he has his large wheelie case and then wheels it along after he's checked the big case in
