We are 14 days from our vacation and our 2 year old is on day 12 of hand, foot and mouth. He has some type of extreme strain that caused him to have spots all over his body not just the hands, feet and mouth. Right now is hands and feet are in the process of peeling almost entirely leaving the skin raw.

Anyone out there with a case like this that has any ideas for me to help him. Doctor says it will just go away.

Thanks!

Poor baby, that sounds awful! My girls had it a couple years ago, but not that bad. Theirs only lasted a few days and never had any peeling. Their mouths were extremely painful though and the only thing I could get them to eat or drink was a Slurpee from 7-11. My DH and I made many trips to 7-11 over those few days!

If the skin is really raw, I would try to keep something on it. My personal favorite cream for things like that is Bag Balm. You have to get it behind the counter at the pharmacy at most places (no prescription though) but it works soooo well. I used to use it for diaper rashes and it would heal a bleeding, blistering diaper rash over night. I would slather your son's hands and feet up really well with it and put cotton socks and gloves on him to sleep so it stays on and he doesn't accidentally rub it into his eyes or anything. They should be a lot better in the morning. I hope he feels better soon!

Thanks so much for the help. I will get some of this.

DS 12 had it really bad last year, he missed a week of school because he could not walk and it hurt to hold anything. At first we though he had chicken pox. He even had them on his head. Bad on hands and feet, not so bad in the mouth. The doctor and pharmacist did tell us to mix Benadryl and maalox together to make a numbing gargle for the throat (you can "paint" it on too.) It took quite a while to go away but if you are at the peeling stage he should be ok in another two weeks.

Hope you have a great trip :)

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a miserable virus. My youngest had it last year and the mouth sores were very painful for her. She missed several days of school and she was prescribed viscous lidocaine to help with mouth pain because she was dehydrating from refusing to eat or drink. That worked to relieve her pain enough to swallow but then she had an allergic reaction to the lidocaine and broke out in a rash and hives all over her body.

I second the bag balm. It works great on diaper rash and eczema. I would give it a try.

Hope your son feels better soon!

My son had HFM last year. He was too young to gargle the Benadryl and Maalox mixture, but I did "mop" it on his other hot spots. It really seemed to help soothe him. I also bought lots of yogurt, pudding, and soft fruits (no citrus) for him to eat as his appetite came back.
I hope your son feels better very soon. Enjoy your trip!

I have been using the bag balm for the last two days and it is great! Thanks for that idea everyone! He still has a lot of spots but I am hoping they will fade some more before we send him back to school on Monday!

Don't know if you know but after everything is cleared up in about a month expect toe and fingernail loss. Since the bumps develop under the growig nail they have to grow it out. It will start at the back of the nail and grow out leaving no nail sections with new nail growing in behind it. It is a little disturbing if your not expecting it but it is all part of hand foot and mouth.
