One South Jersey school has "cancelled" Haloween. They now "celebrate" "Black and Orange" day. Just saw it on the news.

:confused3 Maybe its for the people like Jehovah Witness who dont celebrate it.

That's out of control.

Next thing you know, they'll cancel Thanksgiving because of cruelty to turkeys. Oops, wait, I didn't mean to give anyone any ideas!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....................

Political correctness my butt!

Oh please...

Our foreign exchange student has never had a Halloween in her life (they don't do Halloween in Austria) and she's so excited to dress up and celebrate this weekend. If a kid that's never even HEARD of Halloween wants it, can you imagine how bummed out these New Jersey kids are now?

For years many school districts here inPA (not ours, btw) have celebrated Autumn Festival instead.

Back when I was the Holiday Party Mom for the whole school when my kids were in elementary school we had many children who were not allowed to participate in either the Halloween or Christmas parties. WE had to organize alternate activities for them in the office.

I saw that too. Yesterday, I think.

If we lived in that district, I think DD might have to miss school on 10/31 and possibly have a few friends over for a good old fashioned HALLOWEEN party!!!

What a shame for those kids.

DS's daycare calls it a "fall festival" - but they are still allowed to wear a costume if they want.

They don't celebrate Halloween at all in the schools in our district. No costumes, no party, no nothing.

I think my school district is a bit...weird.

all of our schools are allowed to do Halloween celebrations as extra curricular activities -- parties and etc. after school. the high school runs a "trick or treat"program in the halls after school on Halloween, the middle school has a Hallowwen dance, the elementary school has a party the friday night before Halloween.

but the elementary schools are not allowed to have Halloween parties during the school day. we have several segments of the population who object for religious reasons -- some because of the alleged association between Halloween and "devil worship", others because their (nonChristian) religions forbid dressing up in costume.

well, ok, I can understand that...

but why are the secondary school kids allowed to wear costumes to school that day?

Our kids don't get to celebrate many holidays at all anymore. I think it's ridiculous. Only preK, kindergarten, and 1st grade get to have a "fall party" and they'll have to have them on Friday (not actually on Halloween). Grades 2 through 6 get to pick 2 holidays per year to have a party. Of course Christmas is not Christmas, it's a "winter party" and Easter is a "spring party". 7th grade and over don't have any parties (not even at Christmas). I think it is so sad. Those parties used to be the one thing to look forward to during school. No wonder our kids are depressed. They used to allow children who didn't celebrate to stay home on that day and it wouldn't count against them, but a group of parents got together and claimed their children felt "left out" and "different" if they didn't come to school. :confused3

That's how it is here, too. In fact, no holidays are celebrated at school. We have "sharing feasts and autumn harvest" in November, "winter celebration" in December and "Friendship Day" in February.

And yet the religious right keeps complaining no one listens to them. Seems to me more law makers are listening everyday. Happy Halloween :)

but you guys are posting on a board that is pretty much slam dunk 'politically correct'. :confused3

Maybe most, but I am so far from "politically" correct that I'm lucky to know how to spell it. I'm against hurtful things, but really believe people need to really lighten up.

There is more than one school in SJ that has cancelled Halloween. My friend's son's school, think he is in the 2nd grade also cancelled halloween. They said for safetly isssues. I think is is the stupidest thing I ever heard of. If they don't want to have the parade, that's fine, but they should at least let them dress up and have a party in the classroom.

and I agree with that to the point that my brains seep out of my ears, Papa Deuce. no matter what you opinion, someone is going to take offense and try to profit it from it. ;)

We still have a Halloween party at our elementary. I consider Halloween a secular thing, but there are a few children who don't participate. We have one before Christmas too, and just call it a holiday party. It doesn't bother me what they call it. There are quite a few people of different religious beliefs who don't celebrate Christmas, so it does not seem right to make the winter party a Christmas celebration. If it is political correctness to consider the feelings of others, I'm all for it! Of course, I've had kids in school so long I wouldn't care if all the parties were cancelled. I'm sick of them.

'Canes Fan? Did you change your name?

The staff development days fall on October 31st in our district. The school supports a carnival during October where costumes are allowed/encouraged.

I don't see it as much of "PC" issue as I see it a "why waste a school day on this" issue. Given budgetary concerns, it is difficult to justify the distraction. The Every Child Left Behind act makes every school minute precious.

I think the carnival and the day off was a great compromise!!!!

It's total crap! Just something else public schools are trying to take away! You can't celebrate anything anymore because someone might get offended!
