If I was planning to rent a car anyways, I might grab the current deal from Halifax to Atlanta, then rent the car in Atlanta for the drive to Florida and back. I see fares in the low 300's. Just a thought

Just kind of an FYI that is at least an 8 hour drive without stops I would think. I live in north east georgia and it is 6.5 hours for meand about 65$ in gas without breaks.

Thanks. Appreciate the heads up .... Many of us in Halifax drive 9 to 10 hours to Maine to fly out ... So as crazy as it sounds (yes I know ... It does sound crazy), some of us would see this as a deal. Plus we would get to see Atlanta, or is that Rainlanta? The big advantage for us, is to substitute cold weather driving for warm. Thanks

We considered this last year, also flying into New Orleans and making it part of our vacation, but the car rental rates were prohibitive, in about the $900-1000 range for 10 days. It would have been nice to do this. The rates were in the $280 range from YHZ, that was in early April.

Ted, you certainly have an interesting option. Personally I would like to drive through that part of the US. Plus on your way home you have the long drive before your flight, not after.

I wish we had cost competitive choices from NB. We always have to fly from Bangor, Portland, or Boston (3, 5, 7 hours respectively). We just booked March break direct from Boston (JetBlue) for $235 taxes in, as opposed to $950 (AC) from SJ  With a family of 5 flying locally does not make economic sense.

Let us know if you end up doing the drive from Atlanta.

On the plus side gas in Georgia is about the cheapest in the US.

3.35 last week. also check the smaller airports... charlotte, columbia, augusta. I can fly from augusta to minneapolis for less than i can fly from atlanta to minneapolis even though i fly through atlanta?!

I would jump at this del myself but I've got mileage plus points due for December otherwise, with the recent prices in NE, I'd be in.

Years ago (pre kids) we drove from Tampa round trip to Louisiana (New Orleans and west as far as Cajun country). It was a really interesting trip, though we were in no hurry. We have also driven through NC to within a couple of hours of Atlanta, and it was also very nice.

And, as Ted said, we routinely drive 10+ hours to NH just to get on a plane. :upsidedow

(Sounds intriguing but my new job has sucky vacation time.)

Still..what's the booking window, Ted? Just curious of course. ;)

I never thought of flying into a southern state! Great idea! I live in New Glasgow, would normally fly out of Halifax. We are booked for September for our Disney trip. For 5 of us to fly out of Halifax, it would have cost $ 4000. We booked Southwest out of Portland, for $1100. Would love to see and drive through Georgia though! Will keep my eyes open for the next trip :)

This is our second summer flying into Atlanta and driving into Orlando. We just love the drive and we stop and shop along the way at the farm markets, etc. Plus this year we snagged some terrific concert and entertainment tickets for each end of our trip while in Atlanta. I think our daughters are more excited about this part of the trip instead of the two weeks at WDW. It's a wonderful option and much better than driving to Maine which most maritimers have done already. The hotels near the ATL airport are great and car rentals are affordable.
