Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

I *think* its a bill dh had promised to make payments on - in other words, he took care of it, but forgot about it...

Good News came in late last night! He got a job offer. Bad news... it doesnt start till the end of Jan (good news, he can go to Disney - this was paid off when we joined the marathon - I feel guilty about it now..., and someone is giving us the DVC points.. the money has been spent, flight, room, marathon fees, tickets... food... well who has to eat?? Good news - I'm working 3 days this week!! Disney money!)

TWO JOB OFFERS! One in Indy - less money... far far away - and only a "6 month gig"

One in Rockford. Too good to be true!! Has all the makings of a dream job! (work at home 86 percent of the time :rotfl2: the FIVE button doesnt work here!) work would send him to Colorado a couple of times.... (there are mountains in CO!!) and of course he'd be lead manager of a project for a space project outsourced by NASA! BAD NEWS? Doesnt start till Jan 24, but good news its a minimum of a 3 year project! Bad news... or good news?

So I'll show dh the paperwork about the court date Friday - Thanks Dslvr about the emergency FAFSA - DS is in Finals but last I talked to him UIC had given him a contact person that was working with him... he still sounds happy... such a miracle, to hear his voice and its happy!!

GLASS is out of my foot!! Hip pain diminishes (I can tell when I need a naproxin pill tho!)

:cool1:

Woo Hoo on the job!!

Glad Disney is paid off...at least you don't have to worry about that!

The job sounds awesome. :) 86%...:rotfl2: That is funny.

I'm happy for you and for your DH getting a few job offers! That is some great news!!!!!!!

You're ever so kind. Always there to help a friend out in need! :lmao:

:rotfl2:

Its good to laugh!! Its good to see DH walking with a skip in his step! The load he was carrying was getting so heavy!! The Indy company understood (DH could've taken that 6 month position, and then given them 2 weeks notice... ie work for them for 6 weeks basically - but he didnt feel right, when he gives his word, he likes to keep it... integrity! Love that!) and told him to keep them informed, if he needed work, call them up, they respect Tim, and like what they see!! :goodvibes

I'm working again (giving math tests - so I brought in my knitting!! I'm going to get 2 scarves done, hoping to get a 3rd done!!)

It is darn cold here (ah Johnny Carson, how we miss you? HOW COLD IS IT? (OK my first thought that Johnny would do a Tiger Woods joke, colder here or at Tiger's home??? I know I'm bad!) You know it was so cold, that I saw a dog stuck to the light pole!! (and those darn kids, a fireman really had to rescue a boy who stuck his tongue onto a pole - warm water helped... poor kid!! DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!!)

123467890-= still no number five on this keyboard!! :rotfl2:

Sandy,

I am so happy to read the news about your DH's job!!!!!!!!!!! I hope the good news continues, you are long overdue!

:cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

All,

I just want to say how impressed I am by your progress and the fact that you run. I don't run, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Except today. I had to.

DS has his 1st degree international level black belt test in Tae Kwon Do next weekend. Part of the test is a fitness test which includes a 3 mile run. He has is national level already so has done the run before so we, and he, know he can do it. But he needed a training run. DH is out of town. He (and DSD) are the runners.

All I have to say is ....

Running sucks. Or in my case, jogging sucks, I can't say I'd call it a run, more like consistent plodding.

:lmao:

33:29.

I'd hoped for faster. We were shooting for 10 minute miles, not 11. Oh well.
It was a whopping 34 degrees out and I've got some winter allergy thing that had me full of drippy grossness (and thus spitting) the entire time.

Which DS found highly amusing.

You guys rock.

I am quite positive that is the farthest I've ever jogged in my life. It did remind me why I can't stand it though.

The things we do for our kids!!!!

Cynthia - I like your new sig! CONGRATS on the 3 miles!! 11 min miles? :faint:

Maroo I continue to keep you and Rachel in my thoughts and prayers!

Tim dh says he never has oatmeal before a workout, after maybe!

Leisa I havent had time to devote to the internet - but I've skimmed and I also hold you in my thoughts and prayers!!

Dolce, Dislvr, Lisa Its almost time!! I cant believe it!!

Speaking of disbelief...

DS, DIL and dh conspired to get dd and I a Christmas present - sneaky... a new puppy!! :dance3: He's really cute... he's a beagle looking corgi (huge pointy ears!!) It all started when DIL's uncle was trying to rescue a yellow lab - what a picture was sent to me- I WANTED that dog!!! omgoodness what a sweet, pitiful look he had... then dh says "go get the dog"... but the dog found a new home... sorta... "well Uncle Bob, if anything goes wrong, or if you need someone to drive by and snag the dog, let me know - I'm there!" (the dog was chained outside - at 9 weeks old, in the rain, and the bitter cold was coming!) Turned out puppy went to a shelter, but DS DIL and DH had already gone to a rescue shelter and got this baby!! So they were a wreck of nerves every time I went online searching - and I stopped at the shelter twice... :rotfl2: They at one time thought to wait till Christmas - DH said he couldnt keep up the pretense, 1 week was too hard (he felt he was "lying" to me!! "DH where are you?" (he was at DS home taking care of puppy, gave him a flea bath, vaccinations... walks 2 times a day!! awwww)

So my training..:rolleyes1

still working on the hip - got 1.5 miles in today. (I also fell yesterday trying to get the puppy out for his potty break!) sheesh... :sad2:

Hang in there everyone - I'll start to panic BIG time next week!!

Thanks on the siggie! LOL on the 11 min miles, it WAS only 3 miles. I'd guess I could go about 5 if I had to before I died or really slowed down. If nothing else it was a very consistent pace. No intent of testing that theory though.

And it should have been 10 min, that's what I do in the gym on the eliptical but my sinuses were nasty! I will say this, I felt it today, a little bit tight (and so was DS), definitely used my muscles a little bit differently than they were used to.

Tim, my DH has oatmeal quite often for bfast before a run but then he will wait quite a bit, probably at least an hour, before he heads out for the run. He lives on oatmeal I think!

Aw a puppy!!!!!!!!!!

Ever have one of those weekends from hell? It all started on Friday when a co-worker had some major issues that will quadruple my work load for the next week and kept me at the office late Friday night. I feel for the co-worker, but it is also causing my some major stress. Then, both of my kids came down with the stomach flu and my dryer is only sort of working. Needless to say, I did not run this weekend. (My dear, dear, DH finally packed up all of the disgusting laundry and took it somewhere in town and it was all washed and folded for only $1.10/lb. Expensive because we had 72 pounds of laundry, but so worth it. We were down to one towel and had no clean bedding in the entire house! It only took them a few hours to get it all done.)

Hey! I just spotted my family in the background of the Disney 365 thing about the Jonas Brothers filming the Christmas special at WDW. That's pretty cool.

Anyway, I didn't get my run in, but I think I'm going to stay home tomorrow to recover from the weekend. I will get more grading (my co-workers) done at home anyway. I also decided, after much soul searching, to walk the entire race with my mom. I think I am getting so burned out with running and I realized that I needed a change when I was just dreading my workouts. I've never walked a race with my mom because we usually separate at the start line and I think it will be fun to stay with her this time. It also takes so much pressure off of me. So, I still have to get the miles in, but I can walk all day because I just sort of zone out when I'm not keeping track of my time for intervals. I think this will be a nice change and I can get back to setting time goals for the princess half in march. Doesn't this all sound very logical and not like I am wimping out? ;)

Nope - not wimping out AT ALL! It may be "realistic" but I dont think so - it is shifting your goals - I'm thinking if you did "run" you would do better than you think - but to reshift a goal, to sit back and "enjoy" your time with your mom, to "smell the roses" along the way - priceless!! seriously!!

Here's our new 'furbaby' Zeus!

this is his picture from petfinder.com - he's a few weeks older now and both ears stand straight up - they still are larger than his head!! :rotfl:

Did I catch that right?? You have a dog?? Is that picture of the kind he/she is?? Very cute!!

How is your foot and hip lately?? MIssing you!

Cute dog. Congrats! :goodvibes

(now off to ignore the ticker in my sig.... things that make me go :scared1:)

What a cute pup!

20 something days.... It is getting close!

Thanks everyone on the oatmeal input. I've just been eating about a 1/3 bowl of cereal and have been OK. I ran 2 miles on Monday and I felt like I couldn't run any farther. I did 2.75 total. Then I did weights for 30-40 minutes. I really want to get up to 3 miles. :rolleyes1

I'm still alive, but barely. I think I mentioned that my kids had the stomach flu over the weekend. I ended up with it yesterday, but recovered pretty quickly. I'm happier and happier about my decision to walk this race. Tonight I walked for 60 minutes on the treadmill and actually enjoyed myself. I haven't felt that way about a workout in a long time. I really needed the break because I have to do a semester's worth of grading in one week due to that issue with my co-worker. I've been working on grading night and day and taking a hour to myself was so great. Now, back to that grading!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was able to book a bounceback offer for marathon weekend. Almost nothing was available, but I did get a room at the Yacht Club. I've never stayed in that area and I am excited to check it out. I just wish we were staying for more than 3 nights!

I just tried to pull my reservation information off of the Disney website and I keep getting an error message! I'm trying not to freak out here. Surely they just spelled my name wrong or I have the wrong confirmation number, right? I've emailed my travel agent to see if she can figure it out. My fear is that I gave the reservation agent the wrong dates, even though I know that I double checked them before making the call.

Edited to add:

All is well. My awesome travel agent also could not confirm our reservation through the Disney site, but was able to find us in the travel agent version and she sent me a screen shot of that page. The dates are correct, our names are correct, and the resort is correct.

As you may have noticed, I start to go a little nuts about 20 days out from a race.

I've got a 10 miler scheduled for this weekend. What are your training plans?

that's nice: Keep on going. You'll be at that 3 mile mark before you know it. :thumbsup2

dislvr: I'm happy for you that you're happy with your decision. It's great that you feel that the pressure is taken off of you so that you can actually enjoy this experience. That's part of my problem - I put too much pressure on myself.

I really haven't felt like posting on here in awhile; all I have is bad news. It's official: I'm injured. I will not be able to run the full marathon, my knee will not hold up for a full 26.2 miles. I will still complete the marathon, but I will have to walk a chunk of it.

I'm disappointed. I really wanted to run it. I wasn't able to run (not even my long run) last week because of illness. I ran fever for the first time in four years and was just completely wiped out with upper respiratory problems. I still have a nasty cough that doesn't want to go away.

I went out this past Monday to do 5 miles. I was too exhausted from my illness to do all 5 so I was going to stop at 4. Going into mile 4 my IT band flared up and I had to stop running. I went to the running store and was fitted for better shoes (my current ones were on their way out for high milage runs) and to get a IT band strap. Wednesday I went out for 5 miles (I was scheduled 8). I did make it through all 5 miles but with some difficulty. My knee gave me problems and I had to baby it during the run.

Today I went out for 20 miles. At mile 16 1/2 my IT band said enough! Between mile 17 - 18 I was able to pick it back up for about 1/4 - 1/2 mile but miles 18 - 20 I didn't even attempt to run - just walked.

I can maintain a 13 minute mile walk, I was able to hold that for miles 18 - 20 today despite being injured and despite having just run almost 17 miles before that. I will be able to walk out the rest of my marathon on race day. I do hope that my knee holds out better on the 10th, I want to be much closer to mile 20 before I have to officially switch to walking.

This will kill my time. I was right on with my training to complete a 4:10 marathon. Based upon today's performance, I'm looking to a 5:00 - 5:30 marathon depending on how long I can run on this knee.

Again, I'm really disappointed. I wanted to run this marathon. But, I'll still be there on Jan 10 completing my first full marathon - just not running it all. :sad1:

Dolce :grouphug: I wish I had some great words of wisdom to share or something to say to make you feel better. IT bands suck. Are you using a foam roller? Does anyone in your area do ART? ART basically cured by IT band problems, but it is hard to find someone who does it (at least around here), it can be expensive, and it hurts like crazy. It's good pain, though. Have you checked your calf muscles? I had some pain on the side of my knee that I thought was IT band related, but it turned out that I had a very deep and very large knot in my calf muscle. I was able to work it out with a tennis ball and that got rid of the knee pain. Those are the only suggestions I have, sorry!

I have to admit that walking 10 miles was tough today. I've forgotten how long it takes to walk that far. I did throw in a few running intervals but I quickly realized that was a bad choice. My bad leg was not happy, so clearly my body needs a break. I think if I repeat that again and again I might be able to resist the temptation to run. It is really hard to hold back and not think about my finishing time.

This is what I ran in today. You can't really tell in these pictures, but the snow was really coming down. It just didn't stick.
