Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

I just re read page 1 > >

Motto: DLF>DNF>>DNS (Dead Last Finish is better than Did Not Finish which greatly trumps Did Not Start), WISH gave me the courage to start.

and there is a feather - like in the movie Dumbo - Dumbo holds onto a feather to have the courage to fly - I need that feather!!

I think I needed to be reminded of that!!

Going to find my feather!!

reminding!

:thumbsup2

lifting your car up too Sandy, I hope all is resolved on that front!

WeGoShop vs Garden Grocer :confused3:confused3

I read several threads on the shop services, I finally settled on "Marge" at We Go Shop and I sent an email with a list of a few items way back in July maybe - thinking Marathon weekend would be busy!

Every year we have gone its been October - DD birthday and I have always ordered her a cake. The price has gone from $25 to a whopping $90 if you read the cake thread the quality is hit or miss....

Publix has cakes... hmmm should I?? Of course I should $22 for a chocolate ganache cake with chocolate curls??? Decadent!!

In the past I have shipped a package to myself - its about $1 a pound UPS... now BCV charges a fee, and you have the "tipping fee" and I am done with that! (plus its now cheaper to check a bag than ship it!!)

So groceries... DD has some medical "issues" (she faints, her blood sugar/pressure gets low - ) so I need some easy protein snacks, and gatorade, oh and a 2AM wakeup? Bananas, cereal... Beer is now $6 a bottle at the resort, whether you buy one or a 6 pak - so put it on the list!

Marge called me last night, and she liked my "detailed list" but wanted to go over (I had forgotten the first list!)

So we're all set!

Taper Madness...

every ache, pain, and what if can be attributed to the stress of the Marathon - and "taper madness"

The point is to let your muscles "rest" - dont push yourself to the point of ache... walk/run interval training would be good for these last couple of days...

its all about obsessing, pack, repack, make the lists - oh and check the weather report - 2 or 5 times a day! :rotfl2:

Get ready for the mental aspect of this run!!

Charles on the WISH board did a breakdown of the Full Marathon:

LOL-I'm checking the weather like 10 times a day! I'm worried about a freak blizzard trapping me in BMI or ATL (since I didn't allow for any extra travel time). I'm over the cold for the race. It's -5 here and anything over freezing is going to feel wonderful. I'm just hoping we stay dry!

So, I'm scheduled to do 8 miles today and I'm going to skip it because it is too darn cold. I'll be fine, right? The problem is that I haven't walked since my 12 miler last weekend and I won't have time for more than a couple of short walks this week.

Sandy, I'll be thinking of your DS. Is he going to WDW with you?

Dslvr Thank you so much for reaching out and helping DS!! :goodvibes

He was/is caught in quite the snafu!! Apparantly since he was a music major - he gets an automatic "A" for Band!! and while I thought we had talked to the right Deans to withdraw him from school - it didnt happen. And grades didnt come here - so we werent alerted to the "problem" that he got all F's in classes he never attended, and 1 A in band (that he never attended!)

Because of this UIC wont let him register for classes!

Because Dslvr reached out to help - he at least feels he is doing something to fix it , and he feels people are trying to help him!! :goodvibes He is very stressed about things he cant control, but he seems to be handling it! and I'm very grateful!!

(DS is basically has 2 semesters left before graduation!)

Now that you know that (and boy was it frustrating that I couldn't tell you any of that), I can explain that the 1 A in band really screwed things up! We have a system that is supposed to automatically catch students who earn all Fs. When that happens, we assume the student walked away and work with the student/instructors/college to withdraw or cancel the student's registration. That 1 A kept your DS from being caught by the system!

I checked his record last week and I do think progress has been made. Can I suggest that he double check the reason for his registration hold? (If it is still there.) Have him email me if he has questions.

plans sound good Sandy!

I've been happy with GG and will use them again but have heard really good things about WeGo!

It's amazing what a person can do when they skip a 2 hour run/walk! So far today I've made dinners for every night this week, done 3 loads of laundry, and went to the grocery store. What in the heck did I do all day before I started training for these things? :confused3

I was thinking about starting to pack, but I just have no idea what clothes to bring! I'm debating capris vs. pants (for the race and for my one day of park touring), long sleeve vs. short sleeve, etc. etc. What are you guys packing?

They are telling us we could have some snow on Thursday. My plane leaves at 12:20 PM and I am hoping that the snow doesn't really start falling until after I take off. MS does not handle snow well.

Then we will be FREEZING in MS when I am gone - lows in the TEENS and highs below freezing. This is super cold for us in MS. Add snow to that... and this is me shivering...:goodvibes

I am still battling these blisters. I am not really getting too many blisters in the same place I have already had blisters...but I do keep getting them in different spots. I guess I will eventually NOT get them at all, once my skin gets conditioned...is that how it works? It definitely does better now...because I used to get them at mile 3 and now it is closer to mile 6. ??

Packing - All indications are cold - pants, fleece, gloves... jackets...

Dslvr - YOU are a better mom than me!! DS #1 just found out we're gone for more than the weekend! oops - he's taking care of the new puppy for us! SIL was surprised, but held a good face!! Bless their hearts (they took in her youngest sister - long story, sweet girl!)

Maroo seriously - you are going to want to invest in the right shoes - you have been training and putting miles on these shoes -for the Princess - you will need a new pair - go to a real running shoe store - let them size you right and find the right brand for your stride!! It makes a HUGE difference in not getting black toe, and blisters!

Blisters - Coach Charles just posted that he uses body glide and duct tape!! We usually keep moleskin, but it never stays put - duct tape would stay put!!

WEGOSHOP
gatorade
Cereal
Hershey Kisses!!
water
Root beer (A&W!)
peanut butter crackers
Cake
Chex Mix
Gardettos
Honey nut peanuts
bananas
BEER
Wine
chlorox wipes!!

I have been MIA...but I am so excited for you!!! ANd Maroo:) ANd everyone!

Hoping for good weather...:)

Marge is great..we have used both too....liked her better cause they go with "your" list and look for deals:)

I have to get back to the gym...going to go and catch up here!!!! :)

Woohoo!!

I go to Fleet Feet and they custom fit shoes - you know...one of those fancy shoe stores with a treadmill that you walk on as you get fit so they check your stride, arch height, etc...

And my shoes don't have 100 miles on them yet...but I do plan to get some new ones as soon as I get paid (after this Disney trip) so that those new ones can be broken in - and I will talk to them about the blisters when I get fit for some new ones.

The strange thing is that they are always in a different place...which makes me think it isn't the shoes? I am using GREAT socks - those fancy expensive cushion socks (that I love!) and have even tried blister powder - but got a BAD blister one time when it got bunched up in my socks? They seem to be getting better overall...it is just that as I add miles, toward the end of my walk, I can feel a blister starting. :confused3

And all indications...from what I can tell...is that we are going to FREEZE down in Orlando!

Lows in the 30's - which is REALLY cold when you are standing outside watching a parade - We ventured out one morning in December on my last trip (a few weeks ago) and it was 54 degrees outside...I brought a light jacket and was COLD. We had to go back to the room and get gloves, etc.

I plan on bringing major layers...jeans, gloves, ear muffs, etc. I will just get a locker at the parks if I end up not needing some of the layers. And we may need rain gear.

If I was walking...gee...I would bring my ear covers, biker shorts, shorts over those, long pants over those, my long sleeved wicking shirt and a sweatshirt - I would freeze at the start line in the 30's. But...I am used to warmer weather.

DUCT TAPE????

Whoa.

I gotta try that. Sounds painful, though? Does he just cover his feet in Duct Tape???

Sandy.... I wish you the best in your marathon! There are only a few days left! You will do better than you think. Keep those sweepers away and finish!! I will be hoping for nice weather for you and all the walkers/runners! :tiptoe::tiptoe:

Erase sweepers from your vocabulary! Thats what I am going to do in OCt!

I actually find, for me, that the super cushiony socks can cause problems as it's more fabric to bunch. I've moved to really thin, but good dry fit ones and my sister swears by the kind that have toes in them.

Jeff swears by Wrights and Thorlo's but is also happy with his Asics socks which are thinner.

Duct tape??????????

Lists look good. You will want a good beer or wine when YOU FINISH!!! Did you hear that? YOU ARE GOING TO FINISH!!!!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Sandy, I really thought you were talking about my son! I wish he had someone to help him, but did the exact same thing. Ended up with an A in his computer class that he hadn't been too forever (but each test he aced, so the instructor called him and told him to take his final online) and all F's cause he did just that, walked away. His is medically related and we're working on trying to get things straightened out, but when they are 18, they are an 'adult' and supposed to handle all this themselves.

eeyor/Lisa Thanks for posting your experience. So without the ipod did you make the time - not the distance? How did you feel at 15.2 mm (how did you figure it was 15.2?)
I used a calculator and divided the total time by the mileage walked.
Seems the Ipod helps me with my pace. I didn't make the mileage planned on this particular day cause while I was out, then sun when down and the temperature dropped dramatically. I wimped out and called it a night.
:sad2:

This time next week we'll all be at Disney. You guys will be finishing up the 1/2 marathon and I'll be hanging out at EPCOT.

... and I STILL don't have my Magical Express packet!!
I guess that I'll place a 5th call to Disney today. They dropped the ball on this one.

Oh! Last thing: maroo is going to be at the dinner next Sat! That was what I was trying to find out a month ago, I thought that you weren't coming at all since you were no longer running the 1/2 with Team In Training. So, who is it all going to be? eyor, Sandy, maroo, me... anyone else?

I hope you get the ME package soon. Ours is in, but for some reason I got the impression Brad printed off something from an email. I could be wrong on that.
Elizabeth and I will be at Cape May. We are really looking forward to it.

Torture appt went well!
So glad he is able to help you.
Lisa I know you will do so great in the moment - all the excitement of race day propels you forward - then you see the MK - and varroom another surge!!

I have no idea who is coming to Cape May!! I'll be there ! :goodvibes On Friday Pop at 4 - We plan to come over to POP for this also and eat dinner there.

Car Update: engine is shot. But the good news it didnt freeze up on the exressway - ds was able to get it to a safe place - and the Jiffy Lube people didnt tow it, and were really kind, gave dh lots of phone numbers of people but it needs a new engine... (150,000 miles) Scary. I just want to go to Disney - and I'm feeling so selfish. So "live in the moment"
I pray this works out. But, you are not alone. I have spent so much getting stuff so oldest DS won't have an excuse not to move out, I'm really stressing. I have basically furnished his apartment for him. I was so close to having only one bill left, besides mortgage and car payment. Oh well.

If you've gotten to the end of this - and have time for another prayer - I appreciate it - God's Peace upon us - it was a year ago that DS something bad happened (probably a fall and a head injury) and he was in the hospital for 10 days - but made a miraculous recovery - its the reason we planned for this Disney trip... I just dont want him having any Post Traumatic Stress... the weather - its the same today as it was here a year ago... watching our car themometer 10 degrees, 7 degrees...

I talk too much!
Sandy, I pray daily for your family. Trust and believe. Everything will work out.

I just re read page 1 > >
Motto: DLF>DNF>>DNS (Dead Last Finish is better than Did Not Finish which greatly trumps Did Not Start), WISH gave me the courage to start.
I saw this months ago and this is part of what gave me the courage to begin all of this.

I checked his record last week and I do think progress has been made. Can I suggest that he double check the reason for his registration hold? (If it is still there.) Have him email me if he has questions.
How wonderful that you are able to help Sandy's DS. This DIS has been wonderful and hooking people up who otherwise would have never met.

I was thinking about starting to pack, but I just have no idea what clothes to bring! I'm debating capris vs. pants (for the race and for my one day of park touring), long sleeve vs. short sleeve, etc. etc. What are you guys packing?
I'm bringing a variety. Flying Southwest, I don't have to worry about paying for luggage, although I will only bring one bag.

They are telling us we could have some snow on Thursday. My plane leaves at 12:20 PM and I am hoping that the snow doesn't really start falling until after I take off. MS does not handle snow well.
Tell me about it. Funny thing. DH and the kids have been in NY for the past week. Have not had a single day above freezing and now they are coming home to this. Plus DFIL is coming to sunny MS for a few days to get away from the cold and snow.....:rolleyes1

Our plane leaves New Orleans at 10:15am, I hope to get out before it starts raining. Shouldn't have to worry about ice there, I just hate to take off in the rain.

My plans.
Thursday - pick Elizabeth and her boys up at 7:10am. Drop Aly and Luke off at Elementary. Drop Joseph off at Middle School. Hit interstate and drive to New Orleans. Arrive to ParknFly (got to remember to make reservation) to drop car off. Check in and wait.
Flight leaves at 10:15am and arrives MCO at 12:55. Grab some lunch in airport, then go find ME.
Arrive to Saratoga Springs, drop stuff and find bus to WWoS to get race package.
Back to SS for dinner at 6:00pm. We have a reservation for the Turf Club for about 6:00pm. I made the reservation for 3, but now my DB will not be joining us. anyone interested?

Friday - up at 5:00, to bus stop by 5:30 for Epcot. Doing 5K and will then hang around Epcot for the morning. Lunch at Tutto Italia. We will make our way to POP for the WISH meet and dinner.
After dinner, back to SS for early sleep.

Saturday - haven't figure out the exact timing yet, but bus to Epcot. Go by the big white tent (forgot what they call it) and hang out until time to line up (5:00 I think they kick us out). Find corral and Sandy. Hang out and follow her lead as she is the experienced one. I plan to walk with E and Sandy for the first couple of miles to let the crowd thin out and then I'll leave them and pick up my pace.

After the race, I don't know. I know I want to go back to the room for a shower and change, but if I try to rest too much, I'll crash and not be worth anything for the rest of the day. Any ideas on something relaxing to do, yet not in the room and doesn't require too much effort?

Dinner at Cape May. We will be there!

Sunday - want to spend in MK, but will hop over to Epcot to cheer Dolce through the finish line.

Monday - we go home and have to leave SSR at 11:15am. Kind of bummed about the early flight and not sure if we will be able to do anything. I am going to look at which park has EMH.
