Hakuna Matata - Gobbling up the pavement and thankful we can!

Happy Birthday Lynn! :dance3:

Here's hoping it's a great day full of sun, warmth, and relaxation (and no snow! :rotfl:).

Beth: If you're on dailymile, you're welcome to 'friend' me. lol I have a total of two friends and they're both people I met while discussing the Princess race. :lmao:

I guess a training journal would be useful. I use one for cross-training. It's just how food journals are useful (if depressing). What does the Training for Mortals have that a regular training journal wouldn't?

I had an 'interesting' day to say the least yesterday. My bf has suddenly seemed a bit more interested in Disney planning. :confused3 I'm not sure if it's temporary insanity or if he's actually interested. I'm tempted to think insanity because without notice he up and joined my gym on the way home from work after months on months of maintaining he'd not join my gym because he doesn't know what to do and wouldn't want to work out with me. :sad2: He likes to impulse buy and this is another one, but maybe for the better? I hope so.

I hit up the Running Room on the way home yesterday. I had found my identical shoes at Sport Chek but in a different colour and they felt different, so I went back and Running Room had the same purple/gray ones. They were much stiffer than my pair (pink/white but same exact model of shoe). The guy told me if they felt stiff now, when I run and my foot expands I'll feel uncomfortable. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I spent a good hour (ish) going back and forth between the gray and purple and the pink and white (I have a pink and white pair but was trying on a new pair there). I took his advice and went with the pink and white.

They refused to issue me a difference in price between my 200$ pair and the identical pair that was 150$, though. Their policy is 30 days (not worn outside) and yesterday was my 30th day so rather than argue a fight I wasn't going to win, I simply bought the new pair at 150 and returned my old set. :sad2: I didn't like going that way and I would have gladly accepted the difference back on my card in lieu of doing that but since that isn't their store policy, I was forced to either bite the 50$ bullet or manipulate the situation. :headache: What sucks is they knew they were going on sale because they said it happens every year but the girl who sold me the initial pair failed to let me know that. Ugh, I hate feeling like I'm playing dirty. I don't like doing things like that at all, but 50$ is a big deal (especially right before Christmas and a potential Disney trip).

I have physio today (and they said treadmill training today) so hopefully they can help me work out any lingering shoe issues. I just want to finally run outside (while outside isn't covered in snow) and I can't do that until I know I have 'the pair'.

Good Morning Team!

Thanks all for the birthday wishes – although my birthday is not until Dec 1st, I will probably not be on the thread while we are on vacation – so early wishes are nice!

Saylan – I am assuming that the shirt is a tech shirt, and I wear them tighter than I wear cotton t-shirts (which I like big). Since I will be at WDW for my birthday, I am expecting warm weather and no snow!

Sue – Glad to hear that Chicago was a good trip!

Elizabeth – Sorry about your shin splints – Pixie dust that it all gets healed before the Princess!

Beth – Marathoning for Mortals is a good book, I really like the way it is written, and still remember excerts like tapering will drive you crazy, that is why you will spend so much money at the Expos – it is all just a reaction to tapering, and “when you get to the staging area for the race, get into the porta pottie line, when you are done, immediately get back in line!”

Regina – We leave Thanksgiving day.

AFM – It was really windy yesterday – 25-35 mph winds, so the walk was short – but I did get out with the dogs. Today is colder, high of maybe 30, and I think I heard that our high was now and it would just get colder today – that means get out for walk before it gets colder and before wind starts up, as there is a high wind warning for today also, and so far it is calm.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Hi everyone!

Saylan - That's exactly why I'm not shopping at the Running Room anymore. That's just bad customer service. Yes, you were over the 30 day limit but how good would it have made you felt if they made an exception for you. The last time I was there in October, I bought a patella strap. After I paid, the guy at the cash was more than happy to tell me about the 15% off coupon that was on the back of all the magazines. You'd think it was his store or something... Anyway, I buy most of my stuff at Running Free or Running Warehouse (I ship stuff there to friends/family in the US - much much better prices on shoes).

The shirts that Disney gives out are usually made by Championship. They do have a snugger fit. If you pick the wrong size, there is a chance that you'll be able to swap sizes if there are leftovers or if the volunteer is nice.

Lynn - Happy Happy Birthday!! I hope it's nice and sunny where you are and you're having a fabulous day!

Dave - Good luck with your 6.5 miler! How are you feeling about January! Are you pumped?

Regina - I'd love to see a movie in an empty theatre! Do you have to get Sydney snow boots? Sounds like a nice and quiet Thanksgiving! At least you won't have to tire yourself out doing a ton of cooking! WTG on the 3 miler!

Sue - How's your training coming along for January? Are the back to back runs going well?

Elizabeth - Congrats on your 5K! You still have plenty of time before the Princess starts don't worry! I'd say to make sure you're also icing your shins after your runs and see if your SIL can give you some strengthening exercises.

Margie - Do you have a lot of little ones with you today? Did you go walking with Nikki?

AFM - I did a 30 minute training session yesterday and then treatment. I did opt for the acupuncture. She promised me a recipe for each needle she put in. I'm such a big baby - I guess it's like lolipops for kids  I got up to four but didn't want the one in my foot done. I have had that one done before and found that it hurts. These needles did hurt going in - I've had some done before that don't hurt ... not sure if I want it done again. Anyway, she followed up with a few adjustments and some ART. I spoke to another runner who's more experienced with marathons and he thinks I'll be fine if my longest run is 16-18 miles. So that's a bit of a relief for me. I think I'm just unnecessarily nervous since it's my first full.

Anyway, have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicky I have also found that a longest training walk of 8 miles, will get me and it's worked for lots of others I've worked with, through a half and a 16 miler will get you through a full. More is better but only if you have the rest and recoveery time after.

I'm going into it strong but under trained as far as miles. Right now I'm doing 5 and 6 mile training walks. I'm going to drop some weight so that will help a bunch also.

Dave:hippie:

Lynn: Ok, I'll throw sand and surf into your birthday wishes as well, then! :goodvibes

Yeah, they do say they're tech shirts (being a newbie I had no clue what that meant so I looked up pictures on the Facebook page :rotfl:).

Be sure to keep an eye out for any Winnie the Pooh characters during your blustery day!

Vicky: Yeah, when I got my first set of shoes, they excitedly told me if I give them all my contact information I get a nifty magazine with a coupon I could use right now! I did it for the coupon and the coupon only because 200$ is too much for shoes.

I was technically on my last day of my 30 days, but the issue is, even if it'd been the next day after purchase, they wouldn't give me the difference. I asked her and she almost sounded disgusted when she said 'We don't do that.' It's like I was suggesting something crude. I almost made me feel like I was a bad person for even suggesting such things! :sad1:

I looked up Running Free but the nearest one is about 1-2 hours away so it wasn't an option on short notice. The price for my shoes was cheaper at Running Room anyways and the guy who helped me was CUTE and sweet. He had the most adorable stutter that kind of made you want to cuddle him. He was super attentive but not pressuring or impatient so I actually enjoyed shopping for shoes that time.

I'll probably try Running Free for any/all the accessories I need now, like running clothes (yoga pants suck for this!) and a good fuel/water belt. I'd like an excuse to go for a car ride anyways and maybe I can convince my bf to go to Ikea too! :woohoo:

Someone else made mention of the swapping but said to order larger and swap down since the larger sizes sell out first (probably due to Disney recommending ordering larger). What I might do is hit up a Sport Chek and try on a Championship shirt (pretty sure I've seen that brand around here, it's the black/white/red 'C' graphic right?) That should help me get a sense of 'fit'. I bought a tech t-shirt recently and it fits fine everywhere but around the ladies. I'm not sure if it was based off a man's shirt or what but it surprises me when a woman's work-out shirt doesn't fit in that area. :sad2: If I wanted men's clothes, I'd steal my bf's Under Armour clothing (which I do becuse it's comfy, don't tell him!).

The issue now is to find shoes for the bf. Running Room doesn't carry size 15 shoes and New Balance only carries maybe 1-2 styles. If he pronates or supinates, he's screwed (he walks oddly so he definitely does something). I'll try the stores you suggested online first and see what options they have. We don't have any relatives in the US but maybe I can convince one of his online friends to receive one of our orders. He's in Ohio so it wouldn't be too far a drive to pick it up if he was willing.

I'm SO PROUD of you doing the needles. 4 is way more than I would ever ever have done! I hope it ends up paying off for you. You're so my hero right now for doing that! :worship:

Saylan ~ Sorry, I meant to say that in between the logs for training, there are essays (I think largely written by John) about running. They usually include some humor, and some wisdom, so I like them. I'll look up my DailyMile user name when I get home. :)

Vicky ~ Good for you on your training AND the accupuncture. I don't know if I buy all that stuff, but for those it works for, yay! :)

Lynn ~ I LOVE MFM. :) They definitely have some pearls of wisdom in there. I've also got John's solo book - The Courage to Start (pre-marriage to Jenny...it was confusing to read about his wife Karen until I realized it was a lot earlier). It's a lot the same. I'm debating getting "Running for Mortals" as well - but I need to find it in a book store and look at it to see if it's mostly the same stuff. I'm not positive, but from what Coach Jenny replied to me in an email when I'd asked her a question, I *think* she's going to be at Disney for Marathon Weekend. That would be so cool to meet her!

It's "Thanksgiving Feast Day" at school and I am trying soooo hard to be good. Because it's not just turkey and stuff around here. Everything has sauces on it (I saw them being made and EEK the grease and fat!!) and I don't even want to think about the calories that are included. Especially on an x-t day when I won't burn as many calories as on a run day. My Luna Bar will suffice. I will tell myself that until I believe it. LOL.

Beth: Sounds like some great useful tips in there. I might put it on my wish list for Christmas since I've never run, I'm sure it'll have some great advice on things to do or not do!

I'll have to look up mine as well, I can't honestly remember what it is. lol

Too bad there's no way to avoid the sauces and still eat the yummy food. I love Thanksgiving meals, but hate the Itis (groggy, sleepy, stuffed feeling) afterwards.

Margie: :goodvibes Enjoy your rest day!

I just finished with my physio today and I'm even more unsatisfied than normal. Again I had the intern without the therapist and even then I as often left to do tasks on my own rather than have someone there making sure I was doing them right. I did get to go on the treadmill, but he had my do it barefoot and concluded I'm fine, no pronation or supination.

My pinky toe's ball has been hurting a lot lately (I assumed it was cause I'm walking more on that part than I used to) but when he looked at it he shrugged it off as something not consistent with my issues. I'm going to go to a normal doctor and see what he/she thinks it is.

To round it off, they said I might be done with therapy (I've been going about 3 weeks now?) and when I mentioned I was told to avoid lunges when I started, he said to do a set or two and then I'd be good to go making an appointment about 3 weeks out (or 2 if I have pain). I did the lunges (alone and unsupervised) and found they hurt A LOT in the knees. The therapist intercepted me on the way out and I mentioned his intern had told me to do lunges and then leave so he followed up with me. They basically said do static lunges instead and just come back in a couple weeks. That I should kep my mileage to 5 miles and under at a time (even though I did 6 on Saturday with no discomfort) but the therapist did say since I do two short runs I could up those abit before upping the long run.

I'm hoping that by the time I'm back in two weeks that the intern isn't there. He was supposed to be doing a release on my quad and couldn't apply enough pressure becaus his thumbs have been dislocated too much he can't use them... And when he went to do my glute on one side he was leaning in on my bone and on the other on the nerve so my leg went tingly (which he blamed on me... :confused3). At least I know that if I run the Princess barefoot, I'll be running properly. No idea if that means I should not be using pronation shoes or not (I asked but they said don't even focus on the shoes right now...).

I'm so lost as to what actually happened in the session, I don't even know how to interpret half the junk they said.

You will recogize me by the trail of defeated pudge cells in my wake. Grrrrrrr!! Let the battle of the bulge begin.....

I'm determined that I will NOT have to buy new clothes because of the weight I put on this year. Whether it was stress, injury or whatever it's not welcome and has to go.

Have a magical Thanksgiving holiday y'all.

Dave: You can totally do it! We're rooting for you!

(Interesting fact: The verb 'to root' means 'to have relations' [well actually a cruder version of the phrase] in Australia. During the Olympic Games in Sydney, Team Canada got a lot of interesting coverage becaus all our sporting wear was made and supplied by the Canadian company, Roots. :rotfl:)

Beth: When I read that I totally thought of you! I'm super excited for you and I'm sure you'll have a blast!

Margie: Hopefully you got to rest a little? I feel your pain for being tired. I wish every day could be a 'rest' day.

Sounds like you have the same luck as I with doctors. I had two blackouts from undiagnosed cuases when I was younger and they just said "well, we don't know what's going on, but if it happens again, tell us and we'll have to put her on a list preventing her from driving." Ooook, cause that makes me want to tell you when it happens... :rolleyes1

I didn't know they were marked either! Let me know how they work out. I'm very curious about these compression garments I keep reading about. What does compression (in socks, shorts, pants, etc.) accomplish? Is it something that everyone can/should use or is it for people with a specific issue that needs addressing?

I looked at my foot last night and, avoiding going into detail no one needs or wants to hear, that had been wrong with the skin (that made the intern tell me not my problem) is something I've definitely had for well over a year and not just on my foot. My bf, in his infinite sensitivity, offered to get a knife and cut that part out  (yes he was joking, and no, he's not a psycho, it's just how he handles skin stuff on himself [yes, he seems immune to pain like most humans are not :sad2:]). I politely declined and will probably have a doctor look at it. I am confident it is not the skin issue that's causing the pain.

I manage to eek out a 3 miler last night, but it was difficult. I felt tired from the start and before I was a quarter mile in I was ready to quite. I honestly don't know why I kept going but I did and I finished and rewarded myself with a super long rolling sessions. :cloud9: I'm finding my knees were a little iffy yesterday after the lunges and taking stairs (down, but not up) was painful/discomforting). I am learning today that sensation has only gotten worse. I guess I don't have to worry about being done therapy... :confused3

I'm probably going to be out shopping instead of working out today since the bf needs work out clothes. I'm going to tag along and try the Champion gear on to see how they fit. It should be a leg work-out today but I think I want to rest them given the stiffness in the knees today.

Hi everyone!!

SRD for me today. We are it seems about the only school system in the US that didn't have at least a half-day today. Nope. Full day here in NYC. Oh joy. Just under 90 minutes to go. I'll probably do lottery for a show tonight...we'll see.

Tomorrow morning is my 5-mile turkey trot. I'm psyched! I'm planning to try out my HM interval ratio of 4:1. I figure worst-case I walk a little in the running intervals. Ideally I'd love to do it in an hour - my average pace on Monday's 3:1 interval run was just over a 12 minute mile, so in theory with race adrenaline, it's doable. I could live with 1:05ish (and based on my 1:17 for the 10K in October, that definitely feels reasonable). I'll be ok with 1:10. Well, honestly I'll be ok with FINISHING. But I like to put numbers out there. :P

I hope everyone has great runs/workouts, and my USA pals, Happy Thanksgiving!

~beth

Good Afternoon Team!

Vicky, Training is going ok. Nothing exciting to report just getting the miles done. Did you order cw-x tights yet? When to you expect to get them?

Lynn, Happy Birthday to you! Hope you & Scott enjoy Spacecoast & have a great race.

Margie, Not just compression socks. I have several pair of other brands with a left & right. Are you cooking tomorrow or is someone taking care of you for a change?

To all south of the border. Enjoy your turkey day & safe travels to all!
For those doing a turkey race. Have fun!
Have a great evening everyone..........Sue

So today is going steadily downhill for me and I think tonight is going to be a skip everything night.

My one boss decided to approve my taking vacation time to attend the race a while back. Now the other boss (I have two, sort of) has decided she isn't sure she is comfortable with me being gone during the February/March time. I am glad I haven't booked or registered yet but at this point I am just heart-broken. I feel like I'm going to burst out into tears... I really want to be optimistic that she will still approve it but I'm afraid of having false hope. :sad1:

Hi team!

Sue - They've been ordered but my friend is out of town for Thanksgiving until the 28th. So I probably won't get them until the second week of Decmeber. I'm still planning to keep the mileage light so I'm hoping they won't be as big a deal because of that. I wanted to get a pair at Running Free but they were charging $170 (let's not forget the 13% either) and Running Warehouse had them for $90 less 15% WISH discount (WISHD) and no tax.

Beth - Good luck with the Turkey Trot tomorrow! Remember to come back and give us a RR :) I know there are people who swear by acupuncture. I haven't had it done enough to know for sure. The idea behind it is that you damage the injured tissue/area so that you're forcing the body to make repairs. Even if it's mind over matter - at this point I'll take it!!

Saylan - I've found that the therapy is an ongoing thing for me too. Although the last year, I was doing more preventative exercises (until my physio left) so it's not all bad. I'll dig out my Championship shirt from Disney and measure it for you. I have to figure out where it went first. My understanding of compression garments is that it keeps the blood flowing to your muscles so that it speeds recovery/prevents injuries. Use to be that people wore these after races but more and more, you'll see people running in compression tights or socks. Are they necessary? Probably not but if you're like me where you have to keep things lined up (ie. ankles) they can definitely help. And thanks for the the wonderful compliment on the needles!

Margie - I have a pair of compression socks from RunningSkirts.com Not sure how they compare to other brands but I really like them and mine also have a L and R sock too. I thought they were just being cute about it too. Have you tried reversing them just to see what would happen?

Dave - Thanks for that! I did do the 2009 WDW half on an 8 mile LR so I agree with you there :) Anyway, I may just join you, Kim and all the other cool kids in the back if this thing doesn't resolve itself but I'm hoping that I'll run (no offense). I hear ya on the extra weight! You were a super lean mean walking machine when I saw you last year. I can't imagine you're that much more heavy! Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing you and meeting Sally in January!

AFM - The knee is slowly starting to feel better and after talking to a few more experienced marathoners, I don't feel as bad about my "low" mileage. I did make an appointment to see a sports doc but won't get in until December 9th. Yikes! Today, the knee is just feeling tired and stiff so I skipped the run. I'll give it a try tomorrow and do our team Turkey Trot 5K. I've got boxing tonight and then a few errands to run afterward.

I spoke to Coach Charles through PM and he suggested that I could potentially test for a stress fracture by using a tuning fork. So I'm on the hunt for one. It's not 100% foolproof but seeing how I'm not able to see a doctor for a couple of weeks and I know what the wait list for an MRI is, I'll give this a shot :) Coach Charles also mentioned that I could still rest up another week or so and then do my longest LR around Christmas and still be okay.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! :wave2:

We made it to Denver, 0445 wake up for flight, should be quiet at the airport early tomorrow morn, well that is what we are hoping for.

Hi everyone!

Dave- I’m glad to hear you’re writing again. That’s great!

Saylan- Has your bf started to work out at the gym yet? Also, I don’t think you should feel like you were playing dirty over the shoes. A lot of stores will give you a refund on items if they go on sale with that allotted window. I’m sorry your physio appointment didn’t go well. Can you request the therapist and not the intern next time? You should feel like your questions are being answered and you’re being helped, not questioning whether or not they know what they’re doing. Great job finishing your 3 miler even though you didn’t feel like it!

Lynn & Scott- Safe travels!

Vicky- No, we usually seem to have mild snow here and Sydney doesn’t mind the snow too much. Although, she usually comes back inside with little tiny snowballs attached to her fur that we have to get off. How did you feel after the acupuncture? Did it help at all? What’s a tuning fork?

Margie- I hope you enjoyed your rest day yesterday! How did you like your compression socks?

Beth- Good luck on your turkey trot tomorrow!

AFM, ran 3 miles today on the TM at the gym. It was just too cold to run outside today (11 degrees!) when I was finally ready to run. Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating it!!!

Hi, all,

Just a quick note to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, safe travels, and an enjoyable weekend!
