:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

rubato, aka Tandy - Hi. My name is Tandy and I’m the mother of a fabulous 12 year old preteen son. :lovestruc I’ve been married to Frank (a non runner) for 18 years. I’m a full time student, going back to school to become a nurse. I have always run for fitness, but it wasn’t until my impending
40th birthday that I decided to become a distance runner. I love the miles and can’t wait to run my first ultra-marathon someday.

RunRookie, aka Rick - My name is Rick and I live in Crystal Lake, IL. I am married with three children (one 13yr old still at home). I am a new runner, having started in April 2011. My initial goals were to lose 160 pounds, improve my overall fitness, and to live a healthier lifestyle. Since then, I have run 15 races and lost 110 pounds! I am a big fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci-Fi in general, Disney, photography, music, movies, and technology/gadgets. And I keep a fitness blog at rickpeete.squarespace.com.

RadioFanatic, aka KimberlyI'm 39 mama of an almost 4 year old boy, will be 40 by the race; and was goaded into doing this past 1/2 by friends who knew I could do it although I hadn't run a minute in my life. I started training on May 1, 2011 by doing couch to 5k and the first day was miserable where even running that minute made me want to die. Since then, I've lost 70 pounds, ran the whole 1/2 and am looking forward to my new goal. I'm planning on doing a 1/2 in april and in september, my first full in october here locally and some other 10k and 15k runs in between and my second and most exciting full on the 20th anniversary at disney!

KippWade, aka Kipp - I currently live in Indianapolis, Indiana. My doctors visit in January of 2011 had me at my heaviest weight ever, 282 pounds. It was at this point that I told myself this has to stop. Before moving to Indianapolis in September 2010, I worked with a guy that ran. He told me a lot about it and I had mentioned that I'd had some Disney friends say that we should try a run at Disney World. He convinced me that even I could do it. It took me until March of 2011 to finally start in with the C25K plan. I registered for the 2012 WDW 1/2 in April and committed myself to running. I progressed to Bridge to 10K and then Novice 1/2 Marathon Training by Hal Higdon. Since that doctors visit, I've managed to loose 40 pounds of the 100 I want to loose.

Happy April Fool's everyone! It's rainy here... I guess the old adage of April showers is true. What's everyone got planned for today? Anyone have a good prank or get pranked :)

Dave: Dude! Way to attack those hills and grab a new PR in the process!

Elizabeth: How did the race go?

Rubato: Good idea on the thread name for April! Don't let Frank tease you about Subway. I love that place! How is Harrison doing?

Eva: How did the surgery go?

AFM: April is here! Yeah, it started with rain here in Chicagoland also but now the sun is trying to come through! :goodvibes

Yesterday, I went for a 10.15 Long Run and managed to complete it in 1:32. This is my fastest run at that distance at a 9:04/mm. I ran to my church and back to try out a different route. Today, I had my first Natural Running Form class. It was pretty informative. We went on a quick 1.10 mile run where the coach ran with us, watching our form and making suggestions for slight changes to improve. It was really cool! I got my cadence up to 90 on the run, with the help of a metronome. I am going to borrow one for a while just to get into a rhythm at that cadence with my breathing and everything.

One thing she has us do is whenever we take off or put on our shoes, we have to do it balancing on one leg! That is a lot harder than it sounds! But it is a good balancing exercise. I am going to have to start doing that everyday to get better at it.

Later today, I am going for a 10 mile Walk. Probably at a 15:00/mm pace. Don't worry Dave, I pose NO threat to matching up with your PR. :rotfl:

Hi all

Went for my longest run yet, 16 mile run this weekend (two eight mile loops). Unlike last two long runs, the two loops had very different times. The second loop took 5 minutes longer…I really gassed out near the end. I think it was because the day before I ran 6.5 miles fairly hard (avg pace of 8:05).

A few marathon weekend questions for all those who have been…my tax return is in and I want to put some of it away for next January. I haven`t really thought a whole lot about overall costs until now, so had a few questions from those who experienced the weekend to help me come up with a rough estimate. Accommodations and race fees are pretty straight forward, but wondering about park tickets and food.

Assumptions: Arrive in WDW later in the day on the Wednesday before, leave either late Monday or sometime on Tuesday. Looking to do Goofy or Dopey and take in the Expo.

Park tickets: Trying to count days I may need. Can the Expo take up most of the day (thinking Thursday)? Or can you pretty much see everything in an hour or so? Also, do most Goofy runners go to the parks on Friday or relax and take it easy? I am assuming the Saturday between races is out, and Sunday and Monday would be a yes! Do you bother getting park hoppers? Did any of you get discounts because of the race?

Food: I saw some FB pictures on a previous thread that the team went out to a few meals together. Did you get the DDP or pay out of pocket? If you did get DDP, was it through free dining?

Hi team!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Robbie - This past January, someone had leaked a link for discount park tickets that was meant for TnT people. I was there Wednesday to Wednesday and picked up a 6 day park hopper. I think I only used 5 days though.

Free dining was available for part of the stay but you needed a 3 day minimum and it started on Jan 8th. I think Kim bought tickets as part of her package and was able to pick them up as soon as she checked in. The dining credits couldn't be activated until Sunday. So anyone who was on free dining, probably paid out of pocket for the Friday meet and then used dining credits for Chef Mickey's on Sunday.

I went through the expo in about an hour or so - I didn't find much that I wanted to buy but if you go and listen to the speakers, take your time shopping, it could be a whole day thing. On Friday, I went to our team meet, then to MK for a few hours, back to POP for the WISH meet and then over to CR for dinner. I think I was back at the resort by 7:30-8? I know some people were in bed by about 5-6PM. All of the team meets are optional :)

Good job on your 16 miler! How are you feeling afterward?

Rick - The natural running class sounds interesting. How do you run with a metronome? Isn't that the big thing that people have on top of their pianos? Congrats on your speedy 10 miler :)

AFM - I did an 8 miler and a 4 miler. Both were pretty slow but more or less pain free. I think it might have been because I was running in my CWX tights because the temps had gone back down. Not sure what it was but I'll take it :)

Not much else happening. I worked on a few recipes this weekend that I'll try and post this week. I posted a recipe for strawberry apple rhubarb pie :) The measurements are in weights because that's how we measure ingredients in the baking class.

http://menubyvicky.com/2012/03/30/strawberry-rhubarb-apple-streusel-pie/

Is Good Friday a holiday in the US? It is in Canada so I'm looking forward to the three day weekend. I hope the weather is nice :)

Have a great night everyone!

Good job on your 16 miler! How are you feeling afterward?

Certainly not as well as my 15 mile runs the two previous weekends. It is blister city on my feet!
So this morning I went to the Running Room and bought two pairs of socks (for like $30) that supposedly guarantee no blisters. I hope they are right!

Anyways, can you please mark me down for a 10K race this Saturday? Source for Sports Bunny Hop.
I don't think there is an official website, but it is advertised here on the local running clubs website.

I've updated the race calendar so you're there :)

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the blisters... Which socks did you get? Is it the double lined socks? I never liked those ones but the Smart Wool and Asics socks were great! But I know everyone's different.

I always get blisters and/or chafing the first time I do a really long distance. Did they also recommend a tube of Body Glide? I find that really helps too!

Congrats on the 12 miles this weekend without pain!

The Natural Running class looks to be really cool! The coach really knows her stuff and is good at explaining and demonstrating her points to us. She let each of us borrow a small metronome 'clip' thing that generates an electronic beep that corresponds to the desired cadence. Each beep is a footfall so you just run to match the beep with each footstep. My cadence is usually 86 steps per minute; she wants my cadence to be between 88-92.

Since it is a new month and all...

Just wanted to thank those who have helped me reach my goal for the AVON Walk for Breast Cancer -- 39.3 miles for a worthy cause -- on June 2-3, 2012. For those who may have missed the post last week and would be interested in making a donation, you can read about the Walk and find the link for donating (either online or via snail mail) at http://rickpeete.squarespace.com/my-avon-walk/

Thanks in advance!

Hi all! I know I wasn't around as much in March, but we got some unfortunate news which is affecting whether we will be able to go to disney or not in january so I can do the marathon - which kind of put me in a slump. thing is we already have the room paid for and have tix, but travel, food, and marathon race fees are a lot too. So this slump made it hard to want to get up so early in the morning to run, KWIM?

But I shook it off by last friday, put in a great ten mile run (which you may have seen me talk about on FB) where I beat my four mile PR I did a couple of weeks ago by almost four minutes and beat my best 15k time by almost ten. I really couldn't believe it! Then I had a good 5 mile run this morning. So no matter what happens, I still need to stay fit; and I do enjoy running outside, so I'll just keep hoping and praying it works out - pls send pixie dust my way if you have any to spare!

RunRookie - you have really been ON FIRE! Great job!

bunnyfoo - I'm going to make those eggs on the go this week from your website - it will make breakfast easier for my DS who never likes to sit still when he eats and is SLOW in the mornings - he can take it with him!

LB - great job on the 16 miles! I haven't done that distance yet but hope to soon. and hopefully those socks help! last year for disney, we got in wednesday night and left tuesday. this year, we're getting in thursday morning and leaving monday hopefully late in the day. like bunnyfoo said, disney knew the weekend was going to be busy, so no free dining until that sunday. BUT they did put out a 30% off room rate which is what we used last year (we rented points this year). I actually did the math for our meals and it was cheaper to just pay for the meals than to do the dining plan - I would recommend you do the same and remember to calculate the tickets you have to buy. We also spent only an hour at the expo and felt we saw all we needed to.

RadioFanatic: It is great that you were able to have two awesome runs recently! Last week was a good exercise week for me, but I remember the latter part of January feeling pretty unmotivated and in the dumps. I hope things improve over time (I have a few challenges going on right now too), and I encourage you to 'keep moving' because I find I can better handle all the 'tough stuff' if I am feeling good about myself. Running and staying fit definitely improves my state of mind.

LuzzBightYear: Congrats on the 16 miler, and that speedy 6.5 miler too! You are definitely putting in the foot time and mileage to be ready for your marathon. What race are you training for, other than the PEI Marathon in October?

AFM: Last night I walked for 9 miles at a 15:23/mm pace (2:18:36 hours). Not a bad first time out, especially since I ran 10 miles the day before and 1.1 miles earlier in the morning. Between now and the end of May, I will be increasing my walk distances slowly to 20 miles, and continuing to plan consecutive runs and walks so that I get used to what it feels like (before I have to walk the "real thing" on June 2-3 when I walk 39.3 miles over two days).

So this week ends with a total of 34 miles of combined running and walking. The most miles I have accumulated in a single week! :thumbsup2

Hoping everyone has a good week! :goodvibes

Hey guys...just stopping in for an update...

The surgery went well and I was out and home as expected. Jordan said it's because of childbirth, but I forgot how much surgery pain hurt! I don't take pain pills (I don't like the way they make me feel) and they told me not to take anything else either so I have been inching around our house and taking it easy for the last couple days. The hardest part is not being able to pick up Gage or have him on my lap. :sad2:

Anyhow...he is awake and I am alone with him and two bad dogs so I should go. Hopefully my drains come out today and I can take a shower. I feel so yucky!!

Thanks for all the prayers guys! :grouphug:

Eva: I am pleased to hear that the surgery went well, and that you were able to come home to recuperate with your family. Pain ain't fun, so I will be praying that you can find relief soon. Take it easy though; don't try to do too much too soon. Sending you (((HUGS)))! :grouphug:

Glad to hear the surgery went well! Try to get as much rest as you can!

RunRookie- congrats on the 34 miles - that's amazing!

Happy Monday team!

Rick - Congrats on your 34 miles this week! How are you finding walking vs. running. Oh yeah a pocket sized metronome makes sense. Not sure why I'm thinking you're carrying around a giant sized metronome with you  Does more footsteps mean that you're running faster or that your stride is shorter?

Eva - I'm glad to hear you're doing okay. I was thinking about you on the weekend and hoping everything went well with your surgery. I hope Gage and your pups are well behaved today. Take it easy!

Kimberley - Awww! Sorry to hear about January. It is 9 months away so lots can happen in between now and then. What if you just went in for the weekend - Friday to Monday or something like that? I know the feeling of not wanting to go out and run because you have other things on your mind but WTG on your 10 miler!! Congrats :)

I hope the egg muffin recipe works out! Leave me on a comment on my blog if they turn out :)

AFM - I was up "late" last night working on some cupcakes. Late being midnight (can you tell I'm getting old!) Actually I had made a batch earlier in the day and they didn't work (it wasn't a good recipe). I tried a different recipe and it worked out so I started making buttercream frosting. Well, part way through it curdled :headache: It wasn't a little lumpy ... it looked like a combination of scrambled eggs and cottage cheese. :headache: I was about to throw it away but I figured, I might as well play around with it. I took it off the mixer and hand mixed it and it came together  My arm felt like it was going to fall off but I was happy that it was fixed.

These cupcakes are super cute! I'll post them on the blog later this week. But in the meantime... I have one on pineapple coconut cookies. The recipe comes from Regina! So check it out if you have time :)

Not much else planned for today. I'm going to workout with my chiro and then meet with a friend for coffee afterward. I'm hoping to get out for a run tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it after the two pain free ones this weekend!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Yikes, only April 2nd and 2 pages already!!!

I did read all but not much time to catch up.

Eva, totally missed that you where going in for surgery. Hope it was nothing too serious and lots of PD that you are feeling better.

Will catch up with everyone tonight. An hour lunch is not nearly long enough:thumbsup2
