Hakuna Matada - Fit, Fun and Fabulous in February

WTG Gerry!! That's awesome!!! :cool1:

AFM ~ Well...I had one of those "breakthrough" runs today! Legit! I went over to Prospect Park to run:walk for 2 hours (plus a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down) at a 3:2 interval (24 reps). If I looked at my training plan, it was 7-9 miles, but while training for the NYC Half, I'm looking more at foot time than distance. So two hours, and whatever the mileage turned out to be, so be it. Well...at the end of 2 hours and 10 minutes, my distance was 10.31 miles!!! But that's not the breakthrough! Well, there were two really. The first was that I ran every second of every one of my run intervals!!! I didn't drop to a walk in any of them!! Now, granted, my pace was a bit slower than my shorter run paces and for sure my race pace, but still, I ran them!! The second, and in my mind bigger, breakthrough was that those run intervals included time either going from flat to The Beast (that evil hill in Prospect Park) or starting while on The Beast. INCLUDING a run segment during rep 22 and restarting running rep 23 while on the hill!!!! I'm so proud of myself!!! And as I'm looking to the NYC Half in 5 weeks, that is a HUGE confidence boost, especially since the last miles there are flat to slightly downhill!!

EXCITED!!!!!

Now off to do some non-exciting dishes and a shower.

Peace out!

~beth

Happy Saturday, everyone,

Gerry and Beth: Way to go!

AFM: It must be a good day to run for Team Hakuna Matada. I just ran 6 miles. I'm not back at my regular pace but at least I know that I'll finish the Princess without being swept and without pain. It feels good to be running again.:lovestruc

Enjoy the weekend!

Good Morning Team!

Sue - I’m just trying to cut back on sugar as that is my biggest weakness. We did have dessert for Valentines Day dinner last night, sugarfree pudding with strawberries. So my countdown has to begin again.

Beth - I am glad you feel comfortable enough with us to vent, if you can’t vent to your friends, who can you vent to? Very little snow left here now after a warm weekend - but we have not had much snow here anyway. More Pixie Dust coming your way, glad to hear you are nearly on vacation - have a great trip! Great job on the run!

Elizabeth - Great job on the run!

Gerry - Great job on the 5K!

AFM - Not a bad weekend, it was REALLY windy, so did not do much outside in spite of the warmer temps, did get out for one dog walk, but did spend time on the spin bike 1:15:00 yesterday (trying to build up time in the saddle to prep for 62 mile bike ride in April) and got some weight work in on Saturday. Today the wind should be calmer, so I plan to take my bike outside and try out the new saddle we (Scott) put on it.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Anyone have big plans for tonight or do anything for the weekend? My mom still gives my sister and I chocolates and a little card for Valentine's day. I always think that's cute  And I got a Valentine's day e-card from Margie too!

Lynn - Sounds like a great dessert and I wouldn't count that a real dessert because it was sugar free and had fruit! Hope you're able to get outside for your bike ride today but awesome job on the indoor biking! pixiedust: for both you and Scott and your knees!

Elizabeth - Fantastic job on the 6 miler! I'm glad you're feeling confident on the Princess!

Saylan - Were you able to find a Body Glide stick? Any luck with the blisters? Do you mind if I ask what kind of socks you're running in? If you're in a cotton sock, you might want to switch to a technical sock (moisture wicking). SmartWool socks work really well for me but everyone here has their favourites :)

Gerry - Congrats on your PR! 4 minutes is huge in a 5K! How was the race? Did they do a Valentine's day theme?

Beth - Sounds like you had a great run on the weekend! In a race, if you're able to keep up with all your run intervals, it will make a big difference on your time in the end. Have you been practicing any Italian? You must be really excited about the trip - it's practically days away :) I did an ADHD test a couple of years ago and it came up borderline.

Sorry to hear about your doc - I've gone through a couple of family docs myself in the past 10 years and have found that some of them can be incredibly insensitive. Not only that but a lot of them have a "know it-all" attitude which does them absolutely no favours. Not sure how the medical system in the US works but if you can, keep looking until you can find a doctor you work well with and can talk to easily. My last doc wouldn't give me a requisition for blood work to screen for cholesterol, blood sugars etc. because such tests cost the system money and I'm a runner. Always nice to know your doctor has x-ray vision or to know you can be punished for being healthy.

But feel free to share/vent etc. That's what we're here for - I email/PM lots of people here.

Sue - How was the play?

Kim - I hear we're in for some rain and a deep freeze tonight. Think we'll be as lucky next week Wednesday?

Dave - Did Sally end up accepting the job at WM?

Mike, Regina, Hope, Denise, Margie, Connie and everyone else - :wave2:

AFM - I'm going to the gym tonight - nothing planned for Valentine's which is just as well since I really don't need the calories  Watched two more Oscar best pic nominees on the weekend - 'The Kids Are All Right' and 'The King's Speech'. I'm still liking 'Black Swan', 'Toy Story 3' and 'Winter's Bone'. I thought Geoffry Rush and Colin Firth was fantastic in 'The King's Speech'. Two more movies left to go!

Oh and since it was a movie weekend for me. I also saw 'Gnomeo and Juliet'! Thought it was hilarious and it's a cute little movie for Valentines! Of course, the ending isn't quite the same as Romeo and Juliet … but that was probably a given :)

Have a great day everyone :wave2:

Vicky: I picked up a travel sized body glide this weekend along with a whole slew of stuff (more luggage to complete the set, a jewelled tiara iron-on, fabric for the headband, etc.). I use the white ankle version of these. I'd prefer ankle for running but I'm not picky on brands. I find these are a little tight in the toes but I love the arch support.

I opted not to run on the weekend, to give my toe a little more time to heal (and I coated the sucker in polysporin). It's looking pretty good but since it's under two weeks, I wasn't sure if it's too late for me to squeeze in one more long run (I'm thinking on Tuesday but no later). :confused3 I don't feel like it's too close to the race to do so but I'm not sure. I wanted to do one more run in my 'full outfit' to be sure there's no last minute issues.

I also found a travel security belt (meant to be worn under your shirt) that would be big enough to hold the camera and gu, leaving just the water bottle. I'm not sure if I'm going to get it but I've resigned myself to wearing a spibelt I pick up at the expo and if they sell out, having a backup would be a wise idea I think.

My bf has a camelback from biking he's trying to convince me to use but I'm worried it'll be too annoying for such a race (with so many water stops provided) and it'll ruin my outfit! What I want is a thigh holster (like Lara Croft) that holds a water bottle... in pink preferrably. :rolleyes1

I also picked up a Timex watch at SportChek. It was originally 125 down to 50 and it has a pod that got on my hip and wirelessly connects to my watch. I'm hoping to calibrate it tonight and give it a whirl on one of my runs this week. Since it works like a pedometre, I can use it (somewhat) on my treadmill runs. It's not pink, but it seems to be more useful than the ones at Walmart.

Last items to get: fake flowers (for Rapunzel hair pieces), temp-tattoo transfers, and the belt/waterbottle solution

Good Afternoon Team!

Happy Valentine's Day to all!!

Vicky, The play was excellent. I never read the book as a child. I gave DD the book/ tickets for Christmas.

After mild weekend weather the temps are to drop tonight so I'm opting for spin class. We did our V-Day dinner on Sat. night.

I just got signed on now work needs to get done. Got to run. Have a great evening everyone..........Sue

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Yes, I did get outside on the bike, it was not as warm as advertised, but I did a few laps of our street before my feet got cold. Thanks for the pixie dust.

Saylan - Sounds like you will have quite an outfit for the Princess!

Sue - Glad you enjoyed “The Secret Garden”!

AFM - Yesterday was a good day for exercise, although it was not as warm as it was supposed to be, I got the dogs our for a walk, did a couple of loops on the bike, got in 50 min of Pilates and did some weights. Today should be warmer, the sun will be out today, but the wind is supposed to pick up again - that’s OK for walks, but makes out door biking very difficult! Lots of errands to run today - things I put off from yesterday so I would not have to go to town and could stay home and enjoy the weather. Winter will be back by the weekend!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Saylan: you are putting my outfit to shame! I'm wearing my black capris (no chafing!) a purple tech shirt (might iron on a crown transfer or something) and my running hat with a tiara attached. Perhaps I should bling my shoes? ;)

Saylan: you are putting my outfit to shame! I'm wearing my black capris (no chafing!) a purple tech shirt (might iron on a crown transfer or something) and my running hat with a tiara attached. Perhaps I should bling my shoes? ;)

Update: I went for a run after work with the tiara/hat combination and that just didn't work. Now I'm getting more serious about doing something to my shoes....

Lynn: I decided that if I can't wear a real costume, I'd do my best to make a running outfit fit for a Princess. My bf thinks I'm nuts but he's never seen Disney and what it can do to me! :rotfl2:

Elizabeth: What kind of tiara/hat combo is it? I noticed a lot of people suggested the tiara combs from a place like Claire's. Was it just too much headwear or was there discomfort?

My 'costume' still isn't much. I'm going to try on my next short run to wear the skort I picked up, and if that doesn't work, the black capris will be my back up since that's what I normally run in too (yay no chafing!). All I have is a purple workout top that's rapunzel's shade of purple and a pretty design, a headband I'm making, and some flower hair pieces. I'm just hoping it works out well enough people get the idea of who I'm supposed to be :confused3.

I went and ran my last long run today that I postponed on Saturday. I did just over 12 miles. It was terrible! My foot hurt from mile 1. I've never had a rubbing issue with my shoe around the side of my ankle but for some reason it just kept pushing hard against it. It hurt soooooooooo much! I don't know what I'm going to do but my next short run is Friday so I'll see then if the problem is recurring. It's too late in the game to buy new shoes and this is the first time it's happened so I don't know what caused it.

The bodyglide is weeeeeeeeeeird. I definitely had no chafing issues on my torso, and my blister managed to last most of the run, but I guess it wore off aroundmile 10 cause I felt it catching again after that. I'll have to overdose my feet with it I guess. :confused3

I might have a solution for my camera carrying issue but I'm not sure yet if it'll work. It's still in a 'I dunno if I should try this' stage. :rotfl:

I iced my knees tilll my packs were slush, so hopefully I'm not in too much pain tomorrow. Everything was stiff but the bruise-like pain in the ankle won the award for stand out pain. I just don't know what to do. :headache:

Good Morning Team!

Saylan, your bf also has apparently never seen what Disney races can do others also:lmao:

It was nice here yesterday, a bit too windy to get outside on the bike, but I did get a good dog walk in very nice temps, then 60 min on spin bike. Will have to take advantage of nice temps again today as winter is just around the corner again.

Have a great day all!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Hi team! Hope everyone is doing great and the training is going well! Next Monday is a holiday in Ontario - Family Day. It's soooo made up but I don't care, it's a day off work so I'll take it. Saylan, Sue, Kim … any plans for the long weekend?

Saylan - I've found with myself, sometimes injuries come up when your running form is off by just the tiniest bit - you might have been leaning more onto one side, had a slight slouch etc. I would say to keep icing your ankle until you're able to get into see someone. I don't have much experience with the ankle except my own ankle sprain. In which case, it's just been lots and lots of RICE. I would take a break from running at this point because any extra miles aren't going to do much right now. Better to rest the body and go into the race uninjured. Your costume sounds awesome btw! Everyone seems to have an outfit ready to go - makes me wish I could still go.

Elizabeth - Are you wearing a running cap/hat? Is it possible to have your tiara sit on the outside brim of your hat? Kind of in the same place that you might put your sunglasses ...

Lynn - Good job on getting those workouts in! Hope you were able to get all of your errands done yesterday. We've been getting a little bit of "warmer" weather here but nothing spring-like yet. How's Scott doing? Still skipping desserts? I need your willpower :)

Sue - Glad you liked the play! V-day is better celebrated not on the actual day - much easier to make restaurant reservations! Looking forward to lunch today :)

Regina - How's the work on the house going?

Mike - Keeping busy with the extra hours?

Beth - Are you packed and ready to go? When are you leaving?

AFM - My chiro said I can give running a try in a week or so - I guess that will put me into March. I'd love to register for a 10K at the beginning of May but will wait until the end of the month to see how I feel. Registration for MCM opens next Wednesday and I think I'm going to register for that. I'm not sure about Disney 2012 - has anyone else decided whether they're going?

My PT told me that he's moving to another clinic at the end of the month :( He has a replacement that's going to be shadowing us for the next few sessions. He's kind of cute so it's a little distracting but I've watched him work with other clients and he seems like he'll be a good trainer. Funny thing was, he recognized me from when I was boxing in the gym in November/December and he said I didn't look like someone he should mess with  I thought that was funny!

No plans for the long weekend… probably will stay in town and hang out. I have two more Oscar movies left to watch 'True Grit' and 'The Fighter' so will try and finish watching those.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

got to do a mile walk on the Magic Kingdom utilidors this am. goal is to make today my long walk/run/bike?

Hello everyone!

Re: my hat/tiara. I wore the tiara as if it were sunglasses on my hat. I didn't like the way it shifted as I ran. I may play around with it a bit more to see if it will work.

My race partner and bff decided to decorate her shoes. Since we are running as the Sole Sisters (I know, not original) I think the shoe bling which was once a joke is now a pretty good idea. I'll have to post some pics this weekend of the finished product. I just don't want to ruin a good pair of running shoes...

Saylan:
how is the pain today?

Vicky: My dh and I used to watch every Oscar nominated movie before the awards show. This year's selections have us wanting to pick up the habit again.

To everyone else: wishing you fast runs and zero injuries!

Elizabeth

Hi Team!

Lynn- I’m glad you guys enjoyed the cruise. Have you always had problems with your knee or is this a newer development? I’m glad you had a good exercise day yesterday.

Gerry- Great job on your time!

Elizabeth- Great job on the 6 miles! I’m glad you’re feeling better about the Princess. Good luck with your outfit planning.

Vicky- Did you like The Kids Are Alright? I have it on Netflix right now but haven’t had the chance to watch it yet. I’m planning on going to 2012 marathon weekend. Then, I would like to do a Disney Cruise after that. All I’ve been doing is house stuff! Deep cleaning, toilet leak issues, faucet leak issues….it just goes on. But my house looks fantastic now! I have a few more things to do this weekend, but then I think I’ll finally be able to relax for a few days.

Saylan- I’m sorry to hear your foot is hurting when you run.

AFM, I went out and ran today. I’m up to 8min run/ 2 min walk intervals. Sydney went with me as always and had a great time. The track season has started so I’m back to using the park sidewalks. :) That’s ok though. Have a wonderful Thursday everyone!

Just a quick drive by to say hi........HI

Hope everyone is going great and staying injury free!!!!

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the well wishes!

Vicky: Yeah, I didn't ice it the first night since all my cold packs warmed up on my knees. I did do an ice water bucket last night (as per the suggestions in another thread) and holy it hurt!

I managed to get into see a doc yesterday on my lunch hour and I went for xrays after work. Her first guess is a hairline fracture, but she's not sure that's what it is. I'm not sure how I would tell but I don't think it is because the pain is directly related to something touching the side of my foot, not walking. When I got hom yesterday and walked without my shoes on, there was only slight discomfort (my stiff legs hurt more than my foot). :confused3

A friend is guessing a sprained ankle but since I've never had one, I don't know how to tell if that fits or not. I really really want it to be something that'll heal up for my trip.

After the ice, and ever since, my ankle feels like it needs to pop (you know, when you rotate it and something just pops?) and the spot that is hurt is the place that pops, I think. It hurts to rotate it too much so I can't pop it.

RICE is: Rest, Ice, C-something, E-something right? Well, I've done the first two!

Elizabeth: The pain is about the same. I've switched shoes to wear to work, ones that come up higher so the lip doesn't line up with my ankle, but it's only marginally better (but still better).

AFM: I have personal training tonight. I warned my trainer yesterday I may cancel and just rest a few more days (even though we're scheduled to do arms and upper body).

8 days till Disney, I hope that's enough time to heal up.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Did get all errands done. Last night I did want something sweet, so I settled for chai tea sweetened with sugar free vanilla syrup. It is the first day I really had the urge to eat chocolate. Good luck with the new PT. We have a long weekend also (President’s Day on Monday).

Saylan - RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Good luck with the ankle!

Regina - I have had knee problems most of my adult life, but it has gotten much worse in the last few years. You sound like you have been really ambitious - deep cleaning!

Elizabeth - Have you tried tacking down the tiara to the hat (stitching it down), you could then take out stitching to take it off, and it should at least keep it from slipping around. Looking forward to seeing the shoe bling.

Gerry - Hope you got in your long walk/run/bike yesterday!

Kim - :wave2:

AFM - Yesterday was nice enough to take the bike out, so I rode 10 miles on the street, it was windier than I thought, so parts were a struggle. The dogs also got their walk. Scott wanted to ride also, so I took his bike to his office, and he rode home last night - it had gotten even windier, but for him, it was mostly a tailwind, he only had to ride into the wind for a short ways.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! Looks like the weekend is almost here again!

Gerry - Was the utilidor walk part of the Keys to the Kingdom tour? I always wanted to check them out but wondered if I would get spooked seeing CM half in costume or any other behind the scene stuff.

Elizabeth - The shoe decorating sounds fun but I know what you mean about the shoes. I guess one way to look at it is if you ran once in the rain, they'd be dark and muddy anyway. Might as well make 'em look pretty :) The best pic nominees are pretty good this year but I'm wishing they didn't have the rule where they *have* to pick 10 films.

Regina - WTG on your running! Sydney must love the workouts :) You'll have to get some doggie running shoes pretty soon LOL! Are you planning on the half or the full for 2012... I'm seeing more and more people going for that weekend. Lots of work being done on your house - are you doing most of the repairs yourself?

I didn't like 'The Kids Are All Right' but I think Beth liked it. I thought maybe all the breaking up stuff was a little too close to home but at the same time I didn't feel for any of the characters either.

Kim - :wave2: You're doing Sporting Life?

Saylan - I think the x-ray is the only acurate way to detect a hairline fracture. There's the tuning fork method which someone was explaining to me last year but I think that's a last resort sort of thing - if you're not able to get imaging done. Lynn's right about the 'C' and 'E' - compression and elevation. For my ankle sprain, I feel better when I put it into an ankle brace - accupuncture and ART also help. Make sure you're not doing any jumping, bouncing or quick foot work during your training session tonight.

Sue - Lunch was fun!

Lynn - You're doing so much better than I am with the sugar and desserts. I just can't seem to kick it this time. That's pretty cool that you brought Scott's bike to his office for him :)

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good Afternoon Team!

It's only Thursday but feels like Friday.

Salan, PD for your ankle.

Regina, Please pass on some of your cleaning motivation. I'm lacking & really need to get at it.

Lynn, Any plans with Scott for the long weekend?

Vicky, Yes lunch was great. Looking forward to next time.

Nice weather last night & was able to get a run in outside.:thumbsup2

Have a great long weekend everyone...........Sue
