Hair Dryer question...

I just got back from getting my haircut and my hairdresser always does such a nice job of blowing out my curly hair... something I have never been able to do. I like my curls, but sometimes want something different. The receptionist suggested I buy a professional hairdryer. She says she bought one and it made all the difference for her naturally curly hair.

Any thoughts? Has anyone out there bought an expensive professional hair dryer and noticed the difference? Thanks!

My hairdresser tried to talk me into a $200 one:eek: i didn't do it. Fast forward 2 years. i saw it on ebay for $60 so I thought I'd try it. I love it. It dries my thick hair in half the time. Try finding it on-line. Mine is a Babyliss. I forget where I actually ordered it from.

go to www.makeupalley.com - they do reviews of stuff like this.

I have used a professional dryer for the last 11 years. No matter the cost I would never be without one again!

What is special about a professional hair dryer? Especially a hair dryer for curly hair?

I have curly hair and love my Conair blow dry curling iron thing.

I dry my naturally curly hair about 3/4 of the way with a standard blow dryer. I dont' bother trying to straighten it or anything, then I use this iron/dryer. It works wonderfully. It straightens and smooths my hair, while leaving some body to it.

I bought mine at Target for around $25 a couple of weeks ago. This is the 3rd one I've had in aobut 10 years or so. I use it every day and so does my daughter. So for $25 and about 5 years of use, it's a great deal. :)

you straighten your hair with the curly iron thing? There's no way I could get that in my hair without having to cut it out. I have a wet/dry straightener that is okay with the right hair products. It won't be paper flat like with the chi but I tend to like mine with body anyways.

I've always been curious about this topic.

Please continue your discussion.

I think I'll check out makeupalley.com, too.

OP, thanks for starting this thread.

I've used both on my hair (not curly). I use a professional one everyday at work.

Things I like about a professional dryer are they are more heavy duty (built for a lot of used all day long--although my 1 1/2 yr.old Solano died on me 2 weeks ago), their cord is much longer (easier to use as I am working around my client and moving about the chair) and the nozzle that goes on the end that most people do not use (shame on y'all!) is usually very narrow so air flows direcftly where I want it).

However, non-professional dryers have come a long way and truly are very nice. My mom has a Conair that she bought at Walmart that works very well.

My Solano was ultra light and 1700 watts. I like a quieter dryer if possible and I do think pros are more quiet most of the time. I am sure I will have hearing loss from blow dryer noise all my life though...

If you have a TJMaxx near you, check them out. they often have dryers, flat irons and the like that are available at beauty supply stores for a deep discount.
Never spend $200.00 on hair dryer. I never seen a hair dryer cost 200.00 and would never put that kind of $ into an electrical piece of equipment put together with mostly plastic parts these days. $25.00-75.00 will get you what you need easily (esp. if you are not planning on using it everyday.)

I had a Solano for about 9 years. It still works but after one too many trips to Florida it was on it's last legs. It is now in the guest bathroom. I can't remember right now what my current one is but my MIL got it for me for my birthday 2 years ago.

I don't have curly hair, but it does have a wave to it and it's thick and it's prone to frizzing. W/the professional dryer my hair doesn't frizz and it dries in probably 1/2 the time. I also like that they are much, much quieter. They also last forever. Professionals tend to have to replace their dryers every year or so and they are using them all day long every day. Like I said I got 9 years out of my Solano. Regular hair driers only last a year in my house, and that's if I'm lucky!

I have the same problem, I just wish the dryers would blow out the air a little harder, doesn't have to be hotter, just more air output. I have pretty thick, straight, past my shoulder's hair. It still takes me about 15-20 minutes to dry it, and in the morning for work I get up at 5am, I need a way to cut some time from that, but can't find a good hair dryer with good output. I had asked on here before for some advice, and a couple of people said that too much heat output damages the hair, I understand that, so I need something with normal heat temps, just more air. Anyone have any advice?

My sister and I have the same long thick hair that takes forever to dry. I use the Babyliss hairdryer and she uses something called Super Freak. They both cut drying time in half.

Do you know what model Babyliss you have? I am looking for a new hairdryer too.

It just says on it Porcelain Ceramic Babyliss Pro- it's silver

here it is- Model BABP557ON 125V 2000W

Thanks for your help Jennifer. I was looking at them on ebay and there are alot of different models. Good to know that you like yours.

no problem. I do the same thing. My friend had this one too and loved it so I got it. She was the sucker that paid $200 when it first came out.

Ditto. Except I have the CHI dryer. It took me forever to get it because I didn't want to spend that much and didn't believe that it was really better. I paid a little over $100 for it because my stylist took me to the professional store.

OP, Bed Bath and Beyond usually has the CHI dryers and you can use the 20% off coupon.

I don't dry my hair more than once a week but that's only because it takes so freakin' long and after I dry it I need to do something else to it because it's frizzy and straight as an arrow after. I wonder if that drying brush thingy would work to just finish drying it and maybe curl it under a little bit.

My hair is very thick, wavy when it dries naturally so it has that frizz to it and below my shoulders.

My hair is alot like yours, long thick and wavy. Have you tried using a diffuser on your hairdryer? It makes a big difference on mine, alot less frizzy.

I have tried the brush thingy. Gets stuck in my hair...

Professional dryers are very hot. That is what makes your hair so nice. It is not the wattage, it's the heat. (it's not the heat it's the humidity!:rotfl: JK!) Seriously though- supersolanos are really nice but conair testarosa's are good too and much cheaper.
