My DD12 would like to know where is the best place (and cheapest since she is paying herself) to have hair braids (cornrows) done. We will be sailing on the Western cruise on January 15th.

We got them done on the ship. My dd2.5 had the top half braided with a line of beads that looked like a headband if that makes sense for $20

My daughter also did the headband braid right on the ship (you are guaranteed cleanliness on the ship) and it cost $2 per braid.

It was so cute and we actually just took it out today. It stayed in really nice and we washed it everyday. (no conditioner) It was in 3.5 weeks and still looked good.

I have been on the cruise 3 times and have gotten my hair braided on the ship every time. They do a very good job. I can only keep the braids in for about 1-1 1/2 weeks, but that is because I am a swimmer and I have to put a cap on every day. You have to make an appointment though, and you should do it ASAP. They fill up rather fast.

Sorry if this sounds silly, but...did the braiding bother any of your kids' scalps--like feeling "tight"? My DD 10 so wants to have her hair braided, but has frightfully sensitive skin--all sorts of allergies, etc.

My daughter who is 2.5 yrs loved her braids and they didn't bother her at all, but I know somebody who got braids on another cruise and she hated them she said they were too tight and she felt like she couldn't even blink she said she felt as if she looked surprised all the time. She only kept them in for three hours. I don't know if that is something that was in her head of if they were to tight. My dd2.5 kept them in for 3.5 weeks without a complaint. I also had no problems taking them out either.

Thanks for all the replies. My DD12 had them in once before and loved them and had no problems with them once they were in. She kept them in for 1 week.

Where do you sign up for the braids? I want to be first in line because I have 4 DD's and when we were in St. Maarten it took over 2.5 hours for my one DD to get her very thick, long hair done. It was the best though - no worrying about brushing out knots and wind blown hair. Now I did have one (the oldest - 12) who only kept them in for 3 day (I could have killed her - $50 we paid for it!), my 10 & 8 yo kept them in for 1.5 weeks and my 5 yo kept them in for 1.5 months!

So I would like to get there hair done as soon as possible.

Does anyone know if they do it anywhere at the port? We are going to be there 3 days before our cruise - so maybe I can get it done before we even embark.

We saw the ladies braiding hair by the goofy pool and by the elevators on deck 10 aft (I believe) I was completely turned around in the ship. We made the appointment when we saw them, but I think you can call from your stateroom and make an appointment.

i had the front of my hair braided (i was 37 lol), but it hurt like crazy. I had tears in my eyes the whole time she was doing it. Just thinking about it is making my scalp hurt. I love the braids though and think I will do it again in January....pain or not.....but just wanted you to know that it does hurt some. The results are nice so if you can handle it...then go for it :)

really! It didn't hurt my dd2.5 at all. She sat perfectly for them. She complains when I do her hair and had no problems with the braids. It must depend on who is doing them.

When I was on the cruise my dad signed me up on the first day. They were doing signed ups near the giftshops.
One of my sisters got her hair braided and she almost feel asleep, but my other sister started to cry. It hurts my head, but I am able to withstand it. It all depends on your head.
When I get my hair braided I always get it done on the last or the 2nd to last day. I then don't have to worry about my scalp getting burned and it will stay in longer when I return to school.

Remember braids and cornrows are diffrent...Braids are not as tight...and I believe cost less than the cornrows. We passed on both on our cruise...part of me wishes we would have done it..just so the "hair braiders" at the ports wouldn't bother us...but that's another story all together. Anyways...I've heard of people paying $50-75++ to get cornrow done(all their hair from root to the ends)...But costs really depends on how much your wanting done...all of your hair, just a couple strands, half the length of your hair...or all the way to the ends...

I'm thinking for our next cruise to see if our girls are intrested in getting it done...(they didn't even ask or showed intrested in doing it this last time)...But this next time I'm thinking of seeing if they are intrested in doing it..and if so check with our regular hair stylist...about having it done before we even go. I'd rather spend the time on the ship...enjoying the ship than getting our hair done.

When I got it done on Castaway Cay it was $2 per cornrow and $1 per braid. On my second cruise I got my whole hair braided and it took more than 2 hours. We were one of the last people on the island, because I didn't think it would take that long. It was about $100 because I have a lot of hair. There were 60 or more braids. I now think that getting the whole head done is a little much. Like I said earlier I am a swimmer and I had State the weekend we got back so putting a cap on was a pain.

Hair braiders are all over the place in Cozamel. You can almost name your price. The thing you need to worry about is clean combs.

On our last cruise in May both of my daughters got their hair done on the ship. My oldest (10) has a very tough head and had the crown corn rows, she loved it and it stayed in for about 1 1/2 months. Now my youngest (8) is VERY tender headed and decided to only have a hair wrap with some beads attached to the bottom. This worked very well for her, and it was much cheaper. It lasted for quite some time also. We are sailing again this month and both girls say they want to get it done again. Just be sure to tell the hair braider if your child is tender headed and I'm sure they will be very careful no matter which you decide to do.

I had my 7 year old DD's hair braided before we left home. She has very long and thick hair. It took 3 1/2 hours. She had 51 braids. It was beautiful. The lady actually came to my house and let my daughter watch movies while she braided her hair. She never complained about it hurting. She loved the attention she received entering the ship with her hair already braided.

2 years ago my daughters had their hair braided on cozumel at Chankanaab. My 8yo had the "headband" style and my 4yo just had 4 braids with beads down the side. I think we paid about $30 total. I waited until after formal night because I wanted to get pictures taken, and I struggled with the formal dress and breads look.

my DD6 had absolutely no desire to get her hair braided because she heard me say that it might hurt. We asked a lot of women & girls about their braids during the week and found out that the braiders are much more gentle with the little ones. Most of the grownups say theirs hurt while the little girls didn't.

Finally, on the last day of our 7 night cruise (Castaway Cay), my DH convinced my DD6 to get her hair braided. It was only $1.00 each and it was fast. It didn't hurt her but she thought she looked ridiculous. In fact, she was in tears!

It's been 4 weeks and she's grown to LOVE them. she refuses to let us take them off. Altho' her hair has been washed since then we think we'll be using the "head lice" story...in fact....tonight!
