I have had my hair braided once on the cruise and I was wonder what different styles people have had done? I want to get all my hair done but that is the only idea I have on it right now.:scared1:

Do they do hair braiding on the ship? Just wondering...I am a little concerned about having it done on one of the islands.

I had mine done on the ship last year and it came out really nice. PLUS: I didn't have to miss a day on the island or worry about lice, ect.

I had my daughter's hair done on the Wonder during a 4day cruise. We did 6 braids (not corn rows) done from the crown of her head. This allowed her to 'wake and go' with just minimal brushing. A big bonus for me since she hates to have it brushed. The price was very reasonable....$3 a braid I think. Before we went on a 3 day cruise I had our hairstylest here do it. Not to save money but to save time. The hair braiding time slots book quickly and I would rather be playing somewhere on the boat and not taking the time to do her hair. We are going on the 7 day in December and I will probably do the same thing. As for me I had 7 corn rows done on the beach at Atlantis paradise island. Take cash (the beach people don't want travelors checks) and what I did was...I have a side part to my style so I had her put the seven rows on the smaller section of my hair to the part. the rows went as far as my ear and then hung in a braid. I wish I knew how to attach a pic because it was pretty cute. I've had my whole hair corn rowed 2 other times (not on a cruise) it made life so easy! Either way it's fun to do! I highly recommend it!

That sounded really nice!

I was wondering if anyone has ever had it done so that the braids are all different lengths, and alternate starting points?

DCL has gone a long way to "clean up" the hair braiding on the islands, working thru the local authorities. You can have it done on the ship, on Castaway, or at any of the ports of call. The costs are supposed to be posted, and they are supposed to stick to the posted cost (a big change from 10 years ago!)

8 years ago, on another line, DD had one braid done. The sign said "$2 per braid." When she finished, the woman wanted $10, claiming that the extra was for "long hair" and "beads." The hair was above shoulder length, and she used 4 plastic beads that I can get at any craft store for 1 cent each (trust me, there are beads like this all over my house!). I gave her $5 and walked away. This stuff doesn't happen any more since DCL "got tough" with local authorities.

The signs now say things like $2 per braid, long hair 50 cents extra, plus cost of beads. That makes it clear that you need to negotiate the cost of the beads ahead of time...they should charge you about 10 cents per bead. That adds up to about $3 for a braid with long hair.

There is room to negotiate if you want a whole head done, Get a price for the head in advance, then stick to it with a small tip!

If your child wants her hair braided, we suggest you have it done at the beginning of the vacation - so that they can enjoy it all week. Many children have it done at CC, then have to remove it for school 3days later. Seems such a shame.Nat:Pinkbounc

I'm going to add a few more questions to this thread instead of a new thread...

Let me start by saying that my DD's are 4 and 5. I am thinking of letting them get the style that starts at the bang line and goes back as far as a headband would.

1) on a small head about how long would that take? My one DD has thick hair. I don't want to start soomething that's going to take so long that the kids get miserable.

2) Does it hurt? I, of course, will make sure their hair is tangle free. I'm sure there is some minor pulling involved but is it really minor..think 4 yr old!!

3) How hard is it to get a shop appointment for this? Also, what would be a good time of day to try and get an appointment (I realize this would be an opinion)? in other words, not knowing the schedule of all events, what time of day are the girls less likely to miss something major in order to have their hair done?

Thank you!!!

Jess

ps...one for me. I have short hair. Is there anything they can do to mine?

2. Yes, it hurts. THey need to pull the braids tightly. It isn't unbearable painful, but it does hurt.

1. They are amazingly fast. I won't hazard a guess on your child, but mine went a lot faster than I'd expected.

3. What shop? Children are not allowed in the salon at the spa. Hair braiding is done on deck by the pool, in an open air booth at Castaway, and at various locations on the different islands. There are shops on the islands that do it, but mainly, it is stands out on the streets. As to activities, there are things happening all the time on the ship and in the club/lab. So, there is no way you or your children can do it all. I'd suggest that you pick up a Navigator on the first day, and choose a time when they have "cruising the lab" or a similar activity. That is DCL talk for "free play" time rather than a scheduled activity. Go to deck 9 and make your appointment at the stand by the pool.

for short hair, they can add a "braid" that is really like embroidery floss twisted up with beads at the end.

We had our two daughters hair braided on the 2nd day. Worked out great for the whole week. My youngest was 18 mos. and sat for her whole head without a peep. She wanted to be just like her big sister(6)!

As to the 'does it hurt' question, it depends on your DD.

Our DD had hers done on CC, (we wanted to wait until last day, to not take up any shore excursion time on islands,) and after about one hour she cried for a while, because it hurt. (She was 8.) It was the only time she cried, but it hurt her because of the pulling. Another girl whom we dined with at CC was fine, didn't feel any pain at all.

DD was fine the rest of the time and was eager to get home to show her friends. However, she wants to have it done again when we sail in May, and I'll be prepared w/children's Tylenol.:D

My DD12 had her hair braided on Key West Day, first thing in the morning by the pool. (sign up the first night, sold out immediatly)

She had her whole head done. The braids on the crown are $2(she had 9) and the braids in back are $1. Total was $46, it took 2 hrs. Beads included. Combs are stored in a solution.

She said it didn't hurt at all, just incredibly boring and her butt was numb!

When we were in Cozumel, some girls were having just to crown done, $50, beads not included, I didn't see any disinfecting solution at all.

When I had my hair braided I didn't even feel it. The lady asked if it hurt and I told her she could pull harder. She did and it still didn't hurt!

I agree that they go very fast!

If your child wants to get it done to wear to school I would have it done the last day at sea. that way you don't miss fun on the island. The sign ups are at 5:30(usually) so you will have time to peruse the navigator.
