we had the exact situation ...... she was peeing all over the place... we had to put new carpet down.... then we did it again... after that, We reallyyyyyy thought about the options. I DIDN'T want someone to abuse her once they realized she was peeing, so with that in mind hubby took her to the woods and was painlessly put down. I loved that cat and had her for years. She just wouldn't stay in the box. and she was ruining not only the carpet but the floor under it, and we had spent so much money. We had too...

I think they arrest people for that! Or at least they should.

Did it ever occur to anyone that it costs money to have an animal euthanized and perhaps the pp couldn't spend the money? Its not what I would have done, but just don't figure its up to me to judge her for it.

DD has a friend whose family had a pit bull that they loved very much; he was part of the family. You would have had to see the way they treated that dog to understand what I am saying, but many times the dog was treated more special than the kids. The dog bit the mother and they knew they would have to put him down. There was no way on earth they could possibly afford to take the dog to the vet to be put down, so the father shot the dog. And then he cried and held the poor animal. Every situation is not the same as those in your own life.



OP, don't feel bad. You did everything you could do and its not like someone else would have taken the cat knowing it wouldn't use a litter box. Don't worry about what "will happen", you don't know that for sure. I have seen plenty of older cats and dogs up for adoption at the shelter--maybe someone working there will be able to figure out the problem and find her a wonderful home.

I have 2 cats...one has been naughty from the day I adopted her from the Humane Society. She hates litter..all kinds! Have tried them all. Sooooooooo I have to lay a towel on a plastic mat BESIDE the litter box...grrr...that is where she pees. Sometimes she poops in the box-most times not...did I mention grrrrrr???

BUT I made the committment to her and I know had I taken her back, no one else would want this or her. She has her 'wiring crossed' for sure. So I wash the towels every day and she is happy.Not all animals have it all together... I guess we all have to do what we have to do. Chances for adoption for Kitty are slim to nothing..

We never hit that point, but the choice was taken away when our cat took advantage of an open door and ran away, while DH was alone and cleaning up the huge mess she had made (pee and poop...she seems to have been sick while we were away and the in laws were taking care of her). But we struggled from the very FIRST night we had her; that night I had my very first non-exercise-related asthma attack and it was a BIG one (no diagnosis at that point, no inhaler, just took it a breath at a time), she was extremely needy, she peed in odd places at unpredictable times, sometimes she didn't poop "all the way" and would freak out with what was hanging from her bottom, she had allergies and we worked to find the foods she could have...it went on and on and on... I had a friend who hated that we wouldn't put her out for adoption, but she had all those problems, coudl NOT be with other animals (we were her 4th home, as all animals that lived with her would beat up on her, it was very weird), allergies, etc etc etc...no one wanted her... So while we never got to the point where we gave her up, we were getting close, and it's sickening. It's been 3 years since she ran away...I was just crying about her the other night...

(and we did take her to vets...nothing was wrong except she would lick her leg so it became a festering sore, took us a year to get it healed up entirely...but nothing else was wrong that a vet could fix)

You know what's going to happen to an 8 year old cat at the shelter right?

I know from experience (unfortunately) that euthanasia is one of the cheaper vet bills one can encounter. So if you have a pet and presumably take it to the vet for shots and checkups and treatments when things are going well with the animal, having it euthanized is not an outstanding charge. Unless one's consideration is "heck, the dog/cat has to die, why spend $35 when I can blow it's head off for a nickel?"

She didn't used to...she pee'd everywhere!!!!!!!! We ripped up all the carpet and went for Hardwood throughout. I watched her like a hawk. One day she pee'd on a towel I had amongst some piled ready to wash, that made me think ...hmmmmm......it's a huge pain. But I love her.

I don't see anything wrong with taking a pet to the shelter if you've exhausted all other avenues. I wouldn't want a cat regularly urinating on my bed or other furniture either and I adore cats. I would certainly struggle to find a solution first just as it sounds like the OP did.

The only other way that I would take an animal to a shelter would be if there was a problem with allergies or something similar or if we had to move to another country or Hawaii as my mother did. She was broken hearted when she found out how long animals are quarantined in Hawaii so she gave me her cats and gave her Collie to a wonderful man who just doted on him.

Give me my points as well - because that is disgusting. Something is wrong with you and your husband if this story is actually true. A cat pees on some things and you take it to the woods and shoot it? Seriously, what is wrong with you people?

the little guy you see here is on seizure meds, stomach meds, steroids half the time for his back and gets groomed once every 6 weeks.......i figure it costs me about 70 bucks a month just to have the little knucklehead around. never gave much thought to the nickle way............hmmmmm..................here jasper, here boy.

I am not defending the lady whose husband "put down" their cat himself, but in some areas that is common. We live in a rural area with a lot of hunters and a lot of farmers. I know quite a few people who have done that to their pets. It doesn't make it right and I would never do it, but it is not so unusual for people in these groups.

Where did you get an animal euthanized for $35? My vet charge for my baby last spring was a few hunrdred....yes, it was an unexpected illness, we took her in and turned out she needed to be put down that day, (burst tumor, she went into shock), but it was very costly when all was said and done.

Just wondering what it costs everyone else, certainly not condoning a shooting!
