This is just so weird. There was a guy from a financial service going door-to-door in our neighborhood yesterday (what can I say -- I guess times are tough) and I saw him at my door but he saw our "no soliciting" sign and left. Anyway he must have kept walking down the street to the neighbor on the right side of me because she called my house about 20 minutes later and was in a panic. The guy had gone through his spiel but then told her he was worried about something he saw and could he show it to her...so she goes with him (crazy?) and they walk over to my neighbor's on the left side and they look in through the side panels around the door and the house is just trashed!

My neighbor convinces me to go take a look with her as well because she thinks the house has been broken into and ransacked. The owner of the house in question is a very reclusive single guy in his 40's or 50's that has lived next to me for seven years and I've seen him maybe 10 times. As I'm taking it all in, the "worried" neighbor is on her cell phone calling the guy and leave a message that we're concerned something might have happened and can he please call one of us and let us know everything is okay.

It is just so strange because we live in what I would consider a semi-upscale neighborhood with some pretty strict HOA regulations and the guy has a lawn service that keeps the outside of the house immaculate...but, OMG -- the inside is one of the worst things I have ever seen! Clothes and trash scattered all over the floor, cigarette butts ground into the hardwood floors, all the kitchen cabinets open, the dishwasher open with what looks like trash in it as well. I couldn't believe it.

"Worried" neighbor thinks maybe the guy is sick or injured...I think he could quite be the messiest bachelor ever. I'm also wondering if this might be a case where there house is going into foreclosure or something and he's trashing it...but why keep the yard up? So now we are just waiting to see if he contacts one of us. I'm half worried that he's going to call or come to my door and tell me to mind my own GD business and leave him alone. "W" neighbor wanted to call the sheriff but I told her I think we should wait a day or two and see if he calls.

What would you have done?

I would wait two days or three to see if he calls (as you are doing)..it really felt desperate housewives though  you have to keep us update!

sorry but I keep thinking.. I mean you don't see him that much right? Maybe he is just messy (the reason why his house is like this) and he is on vacation (that's why he doesn't answers the phone)...

I certainly will...if he ever speaks to me again! :scared:

That's exactly what I was thinking...but this isn't just clutter, it's downright unliveable. You'd have to see it to believe it. It really looks like the place has been vandalized, yet it doesn't look like anything has been taken. Maybe he just had the wildest party ever and hasn't cleaned up yet. But if that's the case, they sure were quiet about it!

Not a lame question at all. We did not ring the doorbell because the guy going door-to-door had less than 1/2 and hour earlier and neighbor did not answer. I may just call later and leave a message that we really weren't trying to get into his business, but we hadn't seen him in awhile and were just trying to be good neighbors. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

We have a tv programme in the UK called How Clean is your house where two ladies visit peoples houses that are in need of some major cleaning. Rooms are full of trash from years before, laundry never done and dirt and yuck that would cause serious illness - it is unbelievable :scared1:

So maybe he is just one of those who don't tidy - funny how he mantains the gardens though. As we say here "Nowt queer as folk!"

By the way - which desperate housewife are you?

Hmmm, let's see...I haven't slept with my neighbor's husbands so I'm definitely not Edie, I wasn't a former model so nothing in common with Gabby, I'm a less-than-stellar housekeeper myself so that eliminates Bree (but certainly not as bad as my neighbor!), I'm not quite as conniving as Lynette...so by the process of elimination -- I guess I'm the Susan type!

Totally subbing to this one. Honestly, if his home is attracting rodents or anything like that, you'd be well within your rights to call the Sheriff for a "well being check".

Deep-down I feel almost certain that through good intentions "W" neighbor and I have created an embarrassing situation for everyone involved. However, there's still the remote possibility that something is not-quite-right next door. And if that's the case (although I hope it's not), I'm glad we got involved.

Have a trashed house like this can be a sign of mental illness.

When was the last time anyone saw the guy? Is there mail in his mailbox? If he does not return the phone call in a few days and nobody answers the door call the police and let them investigate.

My FIL lives near some people who are just pigs. The yard is full of junk that would make Fred Sanford proud. My FIL said right after the PP(Pig People) built their house he was over talking with them. They had piles of dirty dishes and glasses all over the house. Trash and trash bags scattered about. The cats were running around all over the house. There was cat pee and poo around the house. PP had not been in the house more than a few days.

PP were FRIENDs of my FIL. :lmao: He did not realize they were this bad. They and another couple had bought land in the country together, subdivided it and all built houses. Oops. :sad1: They are no longer talking to each other.

PP wife is now in a mental institution.

Later,
Dan

I watch How Clean is Your House on BBC America and love it. It makes me feel so much better about my house. I hate to clean but compared to the people on that show my house looks like it was just cleaned.

Yup got me?!

Maybe he is keeping someone living in his basement? Any holes being dug? Building a pool at night?

Maybe someone he is a drug dealer?

Maybe he is building a cistern?

Yup got to know....

Oooooh! Very interesting! Keep us other 'housewives' up on the gossip!

Very curious to see how this turns out. Were there any signs of a forced entry, maybe a broken window or splintered door jam. Or maybe even a blown out lock ala no country for old men:).
