But, if you have treated them with the lice shampoo, wouldn't it be ok to send them? That kills the live lice, and if you use the comb for the nits, then you're A-OK aren't you???

SueM, I hope I'm wrong about what I thought I'd read on the National Pediculosis Society's web site. I just remember being aggravated that they were strongly against the use of special shampoos, and believed they were also criticizing the schools for making the kids stay home. Thanks for posting; I may need to log back on and see what they're saying these days. Thankfully, that was at least seven years ago!

Our school nurse has told me that the AAP.........American Academy of Pediatrics say that children should not be excluded from school due to lice or nits either one.

We also have a nit-free policy, but she will only enforce it on the children who will follow it. If we have a child who consistently comes with nits, she lets it go. She and I have gone round and round on that. I don't really care which policy we use, but since our policy is nit-free, I think it should be enforced equally, not just haphazardly based on what's most convenient!

Crazy timing! Holly has been telling me stories itchy heads in her school lately. I guess there has been quite a few kids with the little friends. I guess it is the season.

She rarely had lice stories when we lived in NH. I guess bugs like the weather here better.

Sorry to hear about your 'visitors.' My dd's had them too. They both have long
hair. It was hours each night going through pulling out the nits. I gave up on the combs and just started pulling them out with my fingers and washing obsessively afterwards. I believe they now have a special comb that'll buzz when it finds a bug or nit. Also, for those of you going down soon...I believe if you wash w/the lice shampoo before you go it provided 2 weeks of protection. Double check the box, I think it says 'prevents reinfestation for 2 weeks.' If you don't have it before you go, this might help too.
One question...I hadn't heard of the hairspray tip before. Wouldn't the hairspray make it easier for the little buggers to stick?

Reminds me of fleas! Im allergic and have 2 dogs, so I always make sure they are flea-less. I foster homeless dogs prior to adoption and brought home a new foster dog who was covered in them! I had to wash everything, brought dogs to groomers for special bath, had to fog the house (which requires turning on the foggers and leaving for 5 hours), lets not forget a complete and total wipe down and vacuum of all floors, drapes, furniture, etc.

I just felt itchy thinking about. I was so bummed, I had recently had some surgery and was recovering, my brother sent my Stargazer Lillies and I forgot to bring them outside, well the fogger finished them off for me.

I wear a hat every day with hair in a pony tail- I was thinking of opting out of hat wearing a few days, but this thread has me thinking Ill keep my hat on!!

I have never heard coconut shampoo keeps you from getting them. I would think the amount of actual coconut oil in the product would not be enough to make a difference.

I have no clue, but I know for a fact that it works at least for us. After using th chemical shampoo and still finding live crawling bugs I did a search online. We just happened to have the coconut shampoo anyway and I used it and it worked.

Keep in mind that those are strong insecticides.

That's one of the best sites and is the site of a non-profit organization called the National Pediculosis Assiciation. The organization was actually started about 20 years ago by some parents and public health people who were concerned about all the children they knew who were being treated with insecticides for head lice. They wanted to make sure there was good factual information available about head lice and treaments for it, because there are many myths.

I am a hairdresser. There is a very good chance that you did not get them in Disney. The incubation period is 7 to 21 days. So if you found out that you came in contact with it. (Which you probably won't unless someone tells you that day. ) You could check your hair everday and not find any. But after 7 days they can apear. I came in contact with them 1 time over my 20 year career. I went to the pharmacy and called the doctor and that is what they told me. He said you won't even know you have them for about 7 days. So there is a good chance they came in contact with them at school before you left. Even if they had a haircut. I didn't notice the case I saw till I was blow drying the hair. Also please call the resort were you stayed. Even if you don't tell us. Don't forget that they don't wash the blankets and the comforters every day. And not everyone takes there own blankets and pillows. Also they can live in pillows for quite along time. This is why I always take my own stuff. (Everyone makes fun of me). Also the treatments in the store. You really need to use them as directed. Pick through the hair very carefully. If you have boys. I would buzz their hair. There is also a product out there that will help remove the dead nits left from the lice treatment. Also follow the directions carefully. But do remember they are Insecticides DO NOT use them to prevend them it is not good fro you or the kids. As for all the home remides they are great tools in conjuntion with the hair treatments. Like the olive oil and coconut oils and mayo. You can put them on the hair and put a bag on their hair over night. It will help kills some they sufficated. It also helps in the morning to comb them out. They are easier to see if the hair is oily. Don't forget that the oils are hard to get out. Use Dawn dish soap it will help to get the oil out. You will need to check hair everyday. Don't forget incubation is 7 to 21 days. So if you see a nit you need to check for 21 more days before you are nit free. The school issue. Our school has a no nit policy. I think it would be a real hardship for some parents to keep their kids out of school. But that is how it spreads. Especially with small kids. They hug a lot and use each others stuff. I check my kids hair everyday and they know what I am looking for and know all the rules about putting hats on and leaning back in cloth chairs. It only takes a few minutes to check their hair. There is no way to prevent them but if you check everyday and they do get it. It is much easier to treat a small case than a big infestation. Lice can't live off of a human host for more than 24-48 hours. They have to have the blood to feed on. So they can't live in pillows for a long time.

I havent' had a chance to read all the posts... but will add my 2 cents.


Don't treat with the shampoo unless you really have the lice(example, the kids down the street that they played with). Paul Mitchell makes a tea tree shampoo that you can get at any salon. Use it regularly to prevent lice. As an added thing, our ped has you put real mayo(not light) on their head heavily coated over night or for 8 hours. You can put a shower cap over it if they will let you.

My best advice for you is to put Tea Tree oil in the childrens hair then put a shower cap on them for 20-30mins.

I also wanted to say, if your children were around the animals at disney ie the petting zoo, they could have come in contact with them there. My daughter was at camp one spring and got them from the horses. Speing is the time they really come out, of course they can year round, but seems to be more noticable then. The horses were really clean, but they are animals the same. The horse camp did verify that some of the horse did have them and they treated them as well.

I have read almost every website I can find on lice and they all say something different!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like no one can come up with ONE plan on how to treat for lice. So people have to pick and choose as to what they believe works and doesn't work. So this is my two cents on how we are going to treat for lice for the second time in two months!!!! They say they cannot live without blood for 24 hours, the little nits and eggs need the warmth of your body and if they do not have it for a couple of hours they dry up and can no longer produce, they don't jump from things to your head, and pick pick pick pick!!! I also am sending my child to school with the understanding of not sharing combs, hats or hugs!!! We used the nixs cream rince and my husband goes through her hair everynight for aprox 1 1/2 hours , she has long curly blond hair! We are not washing everything in the house at the laundramat for $50 a pop. She is not to put her head on the couch or floor and we put everything we can in the dryer for 1/2 hour. The website said that vaccumming doesn't do much except make your house really clean. Why vaccumm the matress?? They can't get thru the fibers of the sheets and matress pad!! I was so silly the first time! So to the people who are for the kids staying home from school while they have nits. Would you want your kids home for 21 days until he/she was totaly free of nits?? Don't flame me, I am just currious.

Animal lice and human lice are two completely different things. You cannot get animal lice.

Tea tree is great, I use it regularly, just in case.........being hugged by those little long-haired angels all day! But, be careful, as some tea tree oils/shampoos can REALLY irritate the eyes.........some without actually getting in the eyes, just near them. Have them hold a wet washcloth over their eyes while being treated.
