My DH and his sisters have decided (along with me) to have all the kids pictures taken professionally for grandma and grandpa. There will be 5 kids ages, 11, 10, 9, 7 and 6, the two older ones are boys the younger 3 are girls. We were thinking of a group with them all and then one of the two boys and one with the three girls and I need your thoughts on what the kids should wear. The 11 year old is an only child, the 10 and 7 year old are siblings and the 9 & 6 year old are siblings. Should they be dressed in similar like colors (one sister has suggested denium and white or red and khacki) or should they wear complimentary colors. For those who have done group pictures like this I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

I've seen a lot of group pictures where everyone wears jeans and a white shirt :)

BTW I think a group picture of the grandkids is a wonderful idea!

I have seen both jeans and white shirts and Jeans and blue shirts. Come to think of it, I have also seen jeans and red shirts. All were great pics.

This is what we do. With a white background the kids are what you really see, they kind of POP out at you!!

My DH's family had a picture of all the Grandkids taken last Spring. At that time, there were eight kids ages seven and younger. There were 3 girls and 5 boys. MIL wanted each family to be in the same color so that she could point to the picture and say "Mary's kids are in yellow". We stuck to the light blue, mint green, pale yellow, light pink and purple. MIL asked that all the kids wear jeans.
The picture turned out pretty good (with that age group it's amazing that the picture was even decent), the colors blended well and it made for a relaxed looking setting.
I will say that if it would have been my choice, I would have probably gone with jeans and white polos for everyone. I love how clean and simple white and jeans look in a picture. But I wasn't paying for it and most of the time my opinion isn't heard anyways :rolleyes1 .

Some of the most beautiful group pictures I've seen are when everyone is wearing the same dark color. (In the one that pops into my head, the family was wearing black turtlenecks.)

I read on a photographer's site awhile ago that solid colors are recommended (nothing too busy that will distract the eye in a group shot.)

It's funny, I've also read recommendations against wearing white, but I see plenty of lovely group shots where people are in white... :confused3

I'm really surprised people are saying white. Maybe it's because we're really fair skinned, but white looks terrible on us. SIL dressed her family in white for our last photo and we are wearing colors. They all look terrible except SIL, who has darker skin tones.

We did a group picture of the grandchildren for my in-laws. At the time there were 17, we're up to 19 now, and it's time for a new picture.

We did denim bottoms, and white shirts. Any variation of either (shorts, pants, skirts and tshirt, polos, tank tops, whatever).

For the next one I think we're going to do denim bottoms, and have 3 or 4 different colored tshirts or polos. We'll order them from the same place, so the different styles are the same colors.

I would also suggest bare feet. I know that sounds odd but I had my kids done this way and have seen several professional shots of families with bare feet in jeans and it was really neat.

We did this for my grandparents a few years ago shortly after the baby (the youngest cousin) was born. There were 7 kids (2 oldest were girls, then 3 boys, then a girl, then a boy) We all wore jeans and a white shirt. All the pictures turned out really cute and my grandparents LOVE that picture to this day. They only recently replaced it with a picture of all 7 of us taken on Thanksgiving this past year. We didn't match at all, but it was still a really cute picture.

we did this for my mother a few yrs ago as a Christmas gift. There were 3 boys and 6 girls. We started with all the different sibling groups in different colors but noone could agree on colors. Since it was Christmas, we ended up with the boys in green tops and the girls in red. The picture turned out ok, we had a white background, but I think if everyone had stuck to solid colors it would have turned out better. Our big complication was the two 2 yr olds who refused to go with their cousins unless their mom's went along. Neither mom wanted to be in the picture so the photographer had them sit on the floor and draped the white background cloth around them. The kids sat on their laps and if you don't know what you're seeing, it just looks like the kids have pulled the cloth around them.

Yearly, we get a picture done with myself (16) and my 7 cousins (all at least 8 years my junior). Once, we did white tops and denim shorts/skirts. Another time, we did khacki bottoms and white tops. We've also done demin bottoms for all and a different solid color top representing each family (brothers/sisters from one family wears blue, another, yellow, etc.). My personal favorite was our latest when we were all wearing Buffalo Bills jerseys ~ we got some really cute and unique shots for that one!
