We are going to try and bring enough food to last the week, but might run out of essentials like milk or cereal. The prices at the trading post seemed really high last time we were there in 2007. Is there anywhere else to pick up groceries near Disney?:confused3 We won't have a car to use. Does downtown disney have anything?? Any help would be great!:thumbsup2

^^^ I just place an order from this place: www.gardengrocer.com I've heard great things about this grocery delivery provider. The only catch is that you must make a minimun order of $40 and there is a s/h charge of $12. So you are looking at spending a minumum of $52 (without delivery tip).

I believe there is a Publix about 15 min. from FW. Those familiar with the area can direct you, but I think you go left out of the fort until it deadends and then turn left. Sorry, can't remember the roads, but there are a ton of places down that road.

There isn't any good alternative using Disney transportation. The best solution would be to either have groceries delivered, or call a cab to make a run. There is a grocery store near DtD, Goodings, but the prices are ridiculous and it's not really convenient enough to walk to. I think the closest grocery store is the Winn-Dixie: exit hotel plaza blvd, take a left on Apopka-Vineland and it's less than a mile on your right. The Publix is a little further, but a lot of folks prefer it: exit Hotel Plaza Blvd, take a right and pass under the overpass and hang a left at the first intersection (Vineland Ave), the Publix will be on your left in about 1.5 miles (after you loop around the outlet mall). If you need more than groceries, WalMart has a SuperCenter just a few miles further: again, exit Hotel Plaza Blvd, hang a right on Apopka-Vineland, drive about 3 miles and the WalMart will be on your right.

You might be able to get milk at the Hess right across from DTD - they had a pretty good selection of beverages - and the prices aren't horrid. But
grocery selection is pretty limited - not sure if you'd find things like cereal there or not.

Other than that - see Shan's post above. :thumbsup2

You really have to weigh the slightly higher prices at the Post, to the cost of finding a way off property to get items slightly cheaper. If all you're looking for is milk and cereal, you're probably better off just buying at the Post. If you need a lot more groceries, then it becomes more cost effective to take a taxi and do a grocery run. It's just not worth paying $15 to save $5, know what I mean?

If you are considering going off property for anything else (shopping, beach, other tourist areas) it might pay you to rent a car for the day, do all the other off property things, and then hit the grocery. Just a thought.

I just wanted to add a link to a photo tour of the trading post, to give you an idea what is available (thanks to FlFortCampster). I also wanted to add that "slightly" is a highly subjective term. I find the prices to be 2-4 times what you'd pay elsewhere. Which, as stated by pp, if all your getting is milk and eggs you'd do better to just pay their price versus a rental car or cab. But at these markups it wouldn't take much to cover the difference.

My suggestion is if you will not have a car, just bite the bullet and pay the prices at Meadow/Settlement trading posts. Cabs are costly & so is are the delivery services. There is public transportation available at the Ticket & Transportation Center, but that is a real hassle.

You also have to factor in the time you will use up trying to work your way to a store off property or to the Hess stations via alternate transportation. Your time is actually worth something when you're on vacation at FtW. If your budget is really crunched, bag your lunch and your kiddies lunches for a month, and pocket the spare money to use when you're at the Fort. Save $$$ & eat healthier!! :thumbsup2

We ordered from the garden grocer website back in December. It was very easy, and the groceries were there before we were!!! Granted, we did stay at Coronado Springs, but we were able to to get all that we needed for breakfast, diapers and snacks for three rooms worth of people. I would recommend it to anybody. The minimum order plus s/h was kind of a bugger, but with the number of people we had (and no car!!!), it was well worth it.

I would do this again, but we're staying in the Fort in 2010, so I think we'll likely hit the Publix or Wal-Mart on the way in.

Next time I go to the Fort I am just gonna call Debbie if I run out of something and have her bring it over.

Thank you everyone. I'm just worried, we normally have just been at the Fort for 4 days, this time it will be 7 days! I don't want to have to be running all around to get food. We will probably just bite the bullet and get it at the post.......or starve.......its the new Disney Dining plan!
Thanks again:lmao:

When we bring prepared (or cooked and frozen) foods - we always eat each meal at the campsite until we run out of food. Once the food is gone, then we start eating in the parks.

I like to try to eat most meals at the camper to save money, but also eat at some of the parks. By waiting until the end of the vacation, we've made sure that the food we brought was used.

Just an idea.
