Open invitation to all Disboards members in the Greater Boston area:

I'd like to get a bunch of people together for a photo shoot at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in Portsmouth, NH and maybe a 2 for 1 with a drive afterwards to York, ME for Cape Neddick ("Nubble") Light on Saturday, September 27th.

Once a month Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse has an open house for free tours. Tours run from 1pm to 5pm and are on a first come first serve basis.

I'd like to get there close to 1pm to get in on a tour and see the inside and climb the stairs. Sunset that day is at 6:31pm that day. As it gets closer to the end of the tour time, if the weather is good that would make for some good light as it gets closer to sunset time.

This could also make for a great reason to make the 20-30 minute drive up to York, ME for Cape Neddick ("Nubble") Light. I've been to Cape Neddick ("Nubble") Light for sunrise and the sun comes up behind the lighthouse. Sunset is a much better time of day.

I don't have any specific itinerary planned out or anything, but going based on the times I mentioned above would make for a good casual get together and hopefully some good photography.

If your interested please check in here and as it gets closer (only a month away now) we'll make specific times for meeting.

I was also thinking of dinner at Portsmouth Brewery too. I've wanted to go there for a while. I'm always up for some good microbrew.

I know there are a lot of regulars and semi-regulars here on the Photoboard from the Boston area, New Hampshire, Maine, and Southeastern Mass. I think we can get a good group together and have some fun. So long as you think you can make the drive you are welcome to come along.

There is also an open house on Sat Oct 11th. This would make for a good rain date. Unfortunately I wont be able to make that date because of a family wedding in Bangor, Me. Obviously you are welcome to go that date.

Here is some info on both lighthouses:

Too bad I live in Minnesota otherwise I would be there!! You should have a good though... Hopefully you get a good turnout. :thumbsup2

I won't be able to make it either but I think we should also plan something for downtown Boston. Go shoot some historical sites, etc.

What do you think?

I think I am free that day, Kyle. Should be a great outing. I think I could make it in October too if we needed to reschedule. Too bad you can't make that date. There should be some sort of foliage change in October too! That would make a nice double outing.

I've done Boston a few times Ben, but I'm always up for photographing around there as well. I need to get back to Memorial Drive again on the Cambridge end to get a shot across the Charles. Last time I went I somehow got an image that is way to noisy than I'd like.

We'll try and work something out some time definately.

Excellent Andy. Your right about the foliage. I'll have to be on the lookout for that while I'm up in Bangor.

Lets hope for good weather. :thumbsup2

Anybody else?

I'd like to be added to the roll call also! As the crow flies I'm only half an hour away in beautiful Gonic NH! Love the thought of being able to "pester" the pros on how they make the images they do and be able to pick up a few tips/tricks along the way! Oh and hopefully get some memorable shots as well!

Excellent John. Glad to have you aboard. :thumbsup2

FYI, I will be bringing my wife and daughter as well on this outing. They really like this stuff, so they will actually let me take my time shooting.

I am in beautiful Exeter, NH. My name would be Kevin

Excellent Kevin. Glad to have you aboard.

I have at least 2 other friends that are planning on joining that aren't from this board. 1 I've done a few photo outings with in the past and the other is pretty new to photography. I may also have someone else, but scheduling will have to been seen first.

Looks like we have a ourselves a fine crew put together. I'm looking forward to it and to meeting a bunch of the other Diser's.

Haven't heard from Pea-N-Me yet. I'll have to send here a PM and there is another regular not to far up the highway from me that I'll have to PM as well.

I might be able to go, I start vaction but work nights and I might have to work Friday night, I'll know more in the coming weeks.
I've been on this tour a few years ago so I may just pass on the tour again and meet everyone there, only because there is very limited space for the tour. I would also advice everyone to get there early as there is very limited parking, maybe 10 to 15 cars max.
The Lighthouse is actually in New Castle NH and is located on the US Coast Guard Station on RTE 1B, they have parking just outside the gate and you follow a blue line, you can get to the Lighthouse only on tour days. The line takes you to the grounds of Fort Constitution which is on the Coast Guard Station property, lots of nice photo opps there, you can actualy get some nice shots of the lighthouse from there too. Link to Fort Constitutionhttp://http://www.geocities.com/Fort_Constitution/history.html
Also if you decide not to drive up to York ME. another idea would be to meet after the the tour at Pierce Island in Portsmouth (very short drive) lots of free parking, it over looks the Portsmout harbor and PN Shipyard and the old Navy prison, from there it's a short walk to Prescott Park and Strawbery Banke http://www.strawberybanke.org/ and downtown Portsmouth with lots of history and old building and cemeteries around.
Kyle you might want to e-mail them for some info, I wish I could remember how the conducted the tour, I know it's a first come basis, if I can help you with anything let me know.

Excellent info Don. I may be one of the last one's there. I work on Saturdays, but I can start early to get done early so long as I plan things out. I figure an hour and a half drive from Braintree so I'm looking to be done with work no later than 11am and getting to the lighthouse by 12:30

Maybe some car pooling some place nearby is a good idea.

As much as I would love to get into the lighthouse I really just want to get up close and on the grounds. I know that lighthouse is on the harder side to get good shots of if your not on the grounds so my thinking was that the tour day was a great way to get a bunch of us together in a photography atmosphere.

I'm also thinking that maybe do a late lunch/early dinner afterwards around 3ish. Even if we allow 2 hours for that it gives us pretty close to 2 hours for the good light leading into sunset at 6:30. It allows for drive time up to York or other ventures around the Portsmouth area. Having been to York for sunrise and seeing how the sun angle is I'd really like to get there for sunset.

If figure we have a mostly open itinerary to make is as casual and informal as needed to give time for meeting and picture taking.

Of course everything is dependent on the weather.

Kyle as far as car pooling it would be the best thing to do, there is a parking garage on Hanover st. and is .75 an hour (not like Boston parking) and it's right around the corner from The Portsmouth Brewery which is on 56 Market st. also if you park on the roof of the garage you can get some nice shots of Downtown Portsmouth, also as mentioned before Pierce Island has lots of free parking and might be a good spot to meet and then drive over to New Castle and the lighthouse (about 1 mile) there's also a park and ride off 95 exit 3A on Grafton Drive, but might be harder to do than just driveing into Portsmouth. I will be able to go, I put in for a floating holiday so I won't have to work Friday night. I'm going to pm Puckfly about riding with me because I see he lives near me.
OT a little I was in the area today and decided to stop at the lighthouse, but couldn't find a place to park, so I drove up the road to a little unknow place called Fork Stark (less than a 1/2 mile fromt the lighthouse) here's some pics from today, some shot with the 300mm. 70-200mm and 10-22mm. Anything else I can do to help let me know.

Hey all I'm new to this, I'm a friend of Kyle's and a Disney lover so this kind of works out. I will try to be in attendance, so long as I can get the car.

Excellent!!! Good to see you made it over here. Let me know how that lens selection goes.

If you need a ride up there let me know. I'll be leaving from Braintree to head up to New Hampshire.

Have you given any thought to visiting Portland Head Light? They are open sunrise to sunset just a thought...
