Does anyone here have a career in Graphic Design? I would like some information on what kind of jobs exist in this field, and what kind of education and talent are required. Can anyone help me? I thought this would be the best place to post a question such as this, but if I'm wrong feel free to move it, Mods!

Thanks!

I know that where I went to Jr. College in Ms. there was a votec course in Comercial Design and Advertising (CDA). It was one of the few at that level and suposedly one of the better ones. But that was over 25 years ago so who knows now. I had classes with them though, my associates degree is in fine arts so I had drawing and design classes with CDA students.

I also have a friend who graduated from Auburn University, Montgomery in Graphic Design and she works in Atlanta now.

As far as what kind of jobs use graphic designers, I have known people with graphic design degrees to work in several different areas: Newspapers, School Yearbooks, Advertising agencies, Catalog production, Promotional design (those companies who produce the bags, pens, etc. that you get at trade shows or events that have designs or logos on them), T-shirt shops, and some corporations have graphic design departments internally.

Here is a link I found on graphic design schools - hope I have been some help.

Hi! I am a graphic designer and i work in the promotional side. I specialize in logos and t-shirt design. the programs i use are adobe illustrator, photoshop and indesign in that order. I got a 2 yr degree. I have always had art classes. The school i went to used to be great and turned out some really good people. The size of the town i live in determines what my salary is. I studied a little of everything but i really enjoy designing T-shirts.

Thanks for all of that info! I have never been an artist! I took a couple of classes in high school, but never really pursued anything. It just seems like something that would be fun to do. Any other Graphic Designers out there?

It is a fun job to be in. I started out as a GD then got into Art Director role for an Agency and now System Analyst! It is an extremely competitive business and high turn around due to many burn outs, long hours and very tough customers!

However, with that being said, if you LOVE what you do then well worth it!

I've been a graphic designer now for 17 years. I work for a public library. I do all of the brochures, flyers and posters for programs, I've done business cards, logos, even billboards. It's a great job, even better when you love what you do!

That sounds interesting! Do you work from home?

I work full time at the library, have my own print shop there as well. So, not only do I get to design the work but actually print and finish it too. After I had my last baby, they let me work one day from home which was wonderful but now I'm back 5 days a week.
