Grapefruit Cake from Brown Derby: Comments

I am not a grapefruit fan, but loved this cake! I personally don't think that it tastes much like grapefruit at all, it's just a good, light cake. :goodvibes
I do like grapefruit, but like mdhkitten didn't think there was much grapefruit taste to it at all. In fact, I was rather disappointed about that. Otherwise, the cake was moist and fine. A solid, if unspectacular, dessert.

The word I'd use to describe this cake is BITTER. I didn't enjoy it at all. I thought it would be a good balance of sweet and sour - but it was way too tart for me

The first time I had the grapefruit cake, I was not a fan. I went back six months later and had it again and loved it. It's now one of my 'must haves' on a trip to DW.
Perhaps a second try would aid me, too. By the way, I lived in Eagle River from '98 to '02. . .still miss it greatly. . .

I love grapefruit but I didn't like the dessert. I thought it was a dry cake. I like my cakes very moist. I also had a hard time tasting the grapefruit.

I am a cake person and have to say I did not like this at all. I thought it was tasteless and what taste it had was sort of bitter....Count me out as a Grapefruit Cake fan.

Wow this really seems to be a hit or miss cake when you eat it. When I had it, it was very moist and light. There was hint of a grapefruit flavor, but not a lot of it (my DH hates grapefruit AND cream cheese, but even he liked the cake)...it was more of just a citrusy sweet taste.

When I made it, it did come out very dry and bitter tasting...so it must be one of those things that it can either work or not work.

I don't know...it was OK. I like grapefruit, but don't love love love it. It was interesting, in the good way that means something different. It tasted light, and not too cloyingly sweet or heavy as many fine dining desserts can be.

Would I order it again? Sure. Would I rush back and make ADRs just to eat it again? No.

Definitely not something you would like if you didn't like grapefruit though! LOL! I agree it is a somewhat understated taste, the grapefruit taste is not overpowering. It's more of a bitter, not so sweet aftertaste. Definitely interesting, as I said. :)

Thanks for asking this question. I'm going in October and doing the pre-fixe thing for the Fantasmic package, so it includes dessert and I hear soooo much about this grapefruit cake that I am now interested in trying it! I love grapefruit, eat it everyday when it's in season. However, I dont like cheesecake and I heard that this dessert has a cream cheese frosting (like cheesecake)...so if I dont like cheesecake, will I like this???

Cream cheese icing is different than your traditional cheesecake. It's usually much creamier and not baked which it part of what gives cheesecake its flavor. With cheesecake, the cream cheese is the primary focus (albeit with forays into flavored cheesecakes on occasion); with the grapefruit cake, the cream cheese icing plays a supporting role. Now, if you don't like cream cheese at all, then I'd consider not ordering this dessert. ;)

I wasn't too fond of it. I liked the cheesecake and creme brulee better. However, I love Brown Derby! The cobb salad and ahi tuna are incredible.

Thank you...sounds good to me. I think I'm gonna try it!!

My DH ordered this as his dessert on our last visit. I must preface my comments by saying that I am not a big cake person. I thought it was a little dry and the bitter aftertaste was definitely noticable, though the frosting was nice. I wouldn't order it again.

We tried out Brown Derby on our trip this past June. It was a nice respite from the heat & crowds. My DH had a steak which was the best we have had in a loooong time(I was lucky enough to get a taste :goodvibes) & the creme brulee was good as well.
However, I was *very* disappointed in the famous grapefruit cake...tasted insipid to me, just slightly sweet & not enough of a citrus taste. IMO - not worth the price, won't order it again.

agnes!

I am not a fan of cheesecake, but loved this dessert. The frosting is not at all similar to cheesecake IMO.

I was so looking forward to liking this cake, but didn't. It was tart and reminded me of cough syrup for some reason. I love grapefruit, but not this cake. I should have gone with what our waiter recommended.

It's nothing like cheesecake at all. In fact, I don't think cream cheese icing is a reason not to eat it. If you love grapefruit, try it. If you don't care for grapefruit, stay away. :)
