Grand Floridian Opinions Wanted

A couple of years ago my birthday fell on the day we left for Disney, so I got to choose our resort that year....I chose the GF!
It may not have been the 1st choice of my DH and 3 DSs, but we all thoroughly enjoyed our Club Level stay at SugarLoaf. The food and drink offerings in the Lounge really spoiled us!

I think the Grand is wonderful and had two terrific experiences there. The staff was incredible, food superb, room always cleaned and turned down and icnredible views. Couldn't ask for more. The theme park view is worth every penny and watchng the fireworks and electrical parade from your room can't be beat. Whatever you choose, enjoy!

It was always our dream to stay there. We spent a split stay there and stayed in Sugar Loaf with CL. I don't think CL is for us, but the GF was for sure! No plans to stay there within the next year or so, but it is my DS's favorite hotel because of the monorail. Hoping that I can afford a small GFV contract when they begin selling DVC points. Enjoy!

Not only am I an employee at the Grand Floridian, but I happen to have stayed there for a week four years ago. It is well worth they $$.

I'm in the minority, I didn't love GF.
There wasn't anything in particular that I disliked, room was very clean & service was excellent...the resort just didn't wow me, so not worth the expense for me.

I'm glad I gave it a try but I'm more comfortable at the Epcot resorts if I'm staying deluxe.

The GF is my favourite resort! The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are luxurious, the restaurants are good and the service is awesome. Theme park room is where it is at. We stayed in Sago Cay in Feb and had the best view of the castle and fireworks. Definately worth the $ imo.

The Grand Floridian is beautiful, though there were more small children there than any other resort we've stayed at. Transportation is of course, superb, especially to the MK. Citricos is one of my favorite restaurants in WDW.

On the other hand, my DH and I prefer to stay at the Epcot resorts for their proximity to a multitude of dining options, and walking to the International Gateway. So if you can't get GF, you might check the Epcot resorts.

I've stayed twice.

The first time was outer building. It was at a very great discount. It was a very nice room, but I would not have paid rack rate for that room at that time. It was November, and on our last night, very late, we had a 'practice' viewing of the holiday light show on the castle from our balcony. It was a magical way to end our stay. It was also very cool that the holiday deocor went up while we were there. The resort kept transforming overnight.

More recently we stayed in the outer club building. It was also amazing. I really love club level, but maybe not the best way to celebrate weight loss.
You have acccess to an unlimited buffet of food much of the day, and much of it is high glycemic carbs- i.e. the fastest way to put on weight.

On the other hand, much of the club level offerings at breakfast are exactly the kind of foods you probably are already eating: fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt (including the plain kind- club level at GF is the ONLY place at WDW I've seen PLAIN yogurt)! They also have SKIM milk if you want it. Other places have skim milk, but sometimes you have to search to find it. You just have to limit yourself. f you can dothat then it's a great option. If the buffet approach is too tempting, I'd pick a regular room - and splurge on the view instead.

Afternoon club offerings are candy, goldfish, chips, cookies. In the evening, they are often classic appetizers like puff pastry with high fat fillings. They also have fresh veggies with dips, and things like salsa. So again, if you have the willpower- then they often have just the kind of food you want. I mean they had really nice fresh veggies like asparagus and grape tomato! (hard to find either ANY other place on property)

Overall the resort is very lovely. It's not my very favorite pool on property, but it is very nice. The view is beautiful. The cabanas on the beach are very nice. the music in the lobby is quite nice.

The one quick serve breakfast we ate the eggs and bacon were really bad. Otherwise the offerings were similar to the lounge, but the lounge offerings were better. Many lounge offerings are bite sized portions.

We really loved the location of the outer club level rooms. they don't have the view, but they were very close to the bus stop, quick serve, and the rest of the dining. Also, it s very close to the quiet pool/hot tub. The only thing that is not super close is the slide pool, and it's not a bad walk.

One other item, when we were there, the monorail was down at least half the time we were there. I've never seen it so bad. I mean literally most days it was down from 10am until 6pm, and late at night. That said, the walk from the TTC to GF is actually not all that far. I think we did it in 22 minutes to our room. The path is not super clearly marked the whole way, but it was kind of pretty. we got to walk past the Poly and the Weding Pavillion. It can be done! (You can not however, walk from MK to GF)
So I would be sure to ask about it before you book.

I also second that the BC/BWK would be great substitutes if you decide to go elsewhere. Both have similar room decor.

For those of you who have stayed there, is it worth the price?
. . . for us, yes it is
. . . elegance and sophistication
. . . and very attentive staff

What view is the best (or does it matter)?
. . . we always get a MK-view so we see fireworks
. . . the room also overlooks the marina

Outer building or main building?
. . . if you can afford it, Main Building
. . . you also get the concierge floor and lounge
. . . we enjoy relaxing during the day with wine and backgammon

Any opinions are appreciated!
. . . we get fresh roses in the room daily
. . . we get fresh carnations in the bathroom daily
. . . we usually get a bottle of wine and chocolate from management

The last part about the flowers, wine and chocolate.... Where did you order these from? Id love that!

We have stayed there our past couple of time and love it. The one bit of advise that I have is given the time you are going, expect the hotel to be very busy or at least the lobby area. Because of the beautiful holiday decorations it does attract a lot of people to the lobby area often making it a bit difficult to navigate, at least with a stroller.

Congratulations on your weight loss!! Great job :yay:

We're going back this November for our second GF stay so we must have enjoyed it ;) The decorations are incredible, not just the gingerbread house but the tree, and the swags on the ceiling, and the light-up white reindeer out on the grass.

Though I would choose the main building too, if you don't want to spend that much the outer buildings are wonderful too. I was surprised how close together everything is so that nothing is a walk. We always have to have a hot breakfast on vacation ;) and I have to say that I became addicted to the hashbrowns at Gasparilla's! There's crack in them, I swear :lmao: just like Krispy Kreme donuts.

The rooms seem very light and bright, and everything was so clean. I enjoyed spending time in the main building watching all the people, especially the weddings (keep an eye out the windows for a glimpse of Cinderella's carriage passing by), and hearing the music in the afternoons. We love the restaurants there and the tea room

And don't worry about the gift cards. We also save by buying gift cards and then pay off our room charges with them and they haven't looked at us strangely yet :rolleyes1

I'm not sure when you were there, but there was an announcement made that the monorail would be down during the hours that you said because of construction at the new GF DVC. It was a couple months ago, but I don't know when it ended.

I know that's part of why it was down, but that wasn't what Disney said when we were there. Truly, I probably missed what was announced on the DIS, but we were not sent any notification from Disney.

Then again, for once I used a AAA TA - extra discount- she was a dingbat to say the least. Maybe this was just one more mistake she made. She messed up almost as much as someone could possibly mess up a room reservation. (And that's all she had to do - book the room and ME)

Anyhow, other than that we enjoyed our stay. I'd stay there again.
