We check in in a few days at the Grand Californian (on DVC points). I'm used to Disney World with the online check in. Is there anything I need to do before we arrive at GC? I wasn't going to request any certain room so I wasn't sure if we needed to call or do anything before we arrive.

Any other tips to make the most of our stay? TIA!

It does not hurt to make requests, even while checking in.
My typical requests:
  • King bed
  • Near elevators adjacent to Napa Rose
  • High floor
  • Park view
You may check in early, although rooms are often not ready until the official check in time (3PM). You will receive a text or phone call (your preference) when your room is ready.

DVC official check in is 4pm.

I assumed the OP was staying at GCH using DVC points.
If they are staying at VGC, I would strongly recommend making a villa request in advance.

Thanks everyone for the tips! We are excited! Yes, we are staying using points.

If you have a king bed room, is there still a couch pullout? We were planning to use the pull out for my daughter and then request a roll-away for my 2.5 year old. Do they have roll-aways?

So, you are staying in the hotel and not the VGC? Be aware there are very limited number of King rooms. The king rooms have a fold out chair usually. And they don't do roll aways last I heard. Rooms are kind of small to add a roll away. Nonsuch would have a better idea if the room could handle a roll away.

All rooms with a King bed also have a Sleeper Chair (left).
There will also be either a Daybed (right) or a Sofa (does not fold out).

There have been no reports of roll-away beds after the renovation. There were a few reports of roll-aways before the renovation, but those were permanently installed -- to create rooms that sleep 5 without using a sleeping bag.
