I posted this over on the Cooking, Scrapping and Craft Board - but I need all the help I can get!!:scared:

Sob!! My baby girl is graduating from HS in June - my firstborn....

Now I have to plan a party - and I absolutely hate trying to figure out what kind of food to serve.

I already have all the party supplies, decorations, etc. I am busy scrapping my little heart away to get all of her albums done - now I need suggestions on what to serve.

Please give me some ideas - I don't want anything too fancy - this will be a casual, hopefully outdoor event. No alcohol....

Thanks!

Let me see,

for my brothers's and my H.S. graduation, we had pool party/barbeques in our backyard.

We put out the usual chips and dip, vegetables and such.

For dinner/lunch, my dad made all the standard barbeque fare plus I think they made kebobs and sausages. There was also salad, and I think 1 hot dish. There was macaroni and cole slaw and such.

We had soda for the younger ones and beer for the adults.

And of course, we ended with an cake!

(Now, my college graduation is coming up, and it will be a totally different kind of party then!!)

Pam I will be reading this thread with interest. I too will be planning a graduation party. DD turns 18 on May 30 and graduates June 12. She wants a combined party and wants to have a crab feast. First is picking a date when none of her friends are having their parties.

I am glad you started this thread my first born dd graduating June 18th .

my friend had a college party last year and they had the most delicious shredded turkey ever. they had simmered a hole turkey breast in two cans of beer for about 12 hours (overnight) in a slow cooker. it was so....yummy!

i just graduated last may from high school..i loved my party and it wasnt anything too fancy at all....mine was just at my house, we had a pool party/picnic and it was a combination of my graduation and my brother's bday party..so there were people there for b oth of us..but it was great...we had graduation decorations, typical hamburger , hot dogs, and some pastas...and a cake...graduation was the best!

Congratulations to your daughter!

I second and third the bbq idea...maybe give it a Caribbean theme with steeldrum band music , fruity, non-alcoholic drinks, Carribbean Jerk chicken, cornbread, rice and peas, Johnny Cakes ...sounds like it'd be a lot of fun!:)

Or maybe a Hawaiian luau-type thing with leis and Dole Whips!:)

What time should we all be there?;)

We went fairly casual and simple, but it was so great...and it was good too because we kept inviting people throughout the day and more and more people kept showing up, but we had plenty of food...We got deli trays of meat and cheeses with different types of bread, other sandwich toppings, veggie trays, ice cream cake, chips and dip, chips and salsa....and it was nice because it was so simple nobody really had to do anything, and everyone was able to relax and just enjoy it without having to work...The ice cream cake decorated for graduation was the best part! Too bad my freezer will be too small to have one for my college graduation!

BTW...if anyone has similar ideas for a college graduation (still no alcohol, just because I'm of age doesn't mean I drink) I'm interested! I was thinking about a Zaxby's tray of chicken tenders and whatever else we wanted to go with it...but I'm still open to ideas, but with little labor. We'll be too busy to cook!!

I'm trying to think of the different graduation parties my friends had last year.
Pool party- grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, pasta salad, chips..
Luau- hawaiian chicken, fruit display, shish-kabobs (I know I ruined the spelling of that, sorry), tropical drinks...
Inflatable obstacle course/Volleyball- hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, mac n cheese, chips and dip, veggies...
Movie night- pizza, popcorn, theater type candy
There were also just a lot of grilling out and playing volleyball/soccer in the back yard parties.

I think the type of food you serve depends on your theme and plans for the party. The luau idea went over really well with everyone, although a normal bbq would be easier.

My DD will also Graduate in May :( I will have to watch this thread to get some good ideas

I am pretty basic, for parties I usually just cater something like trays of Chicken Parm, Ziti, Eggplant and a 6 foot hero.

I'm also in the same boat, My oldest DD will be graduating in June. She just told me she wants a party the other night... so I'll take all the ideas I can find!

For stuff like that we usually do most of whats been mentioned here already. We keep it pretty simple...
Chips, dips, crackers, cheese
Cold cuts, rolls, with all the fixins
Potato salad & pasta salad
A tray of lasagna or eggplant parm
Sauce and meatballs
For dessert, a cake of course and maybe some mini Italian pastries, and wahtever else people show up with.

I've had 3 graduation parties and right now am planning a wedding!

For DD's graduation party we had hot sausage, fried chicken and stuffed shells. Sides were, spinach balls (can make ahead of time)a salad, party potatoes, jello salads, fruit salads, cookies and cake. Keep it simple if it's at home and Good Luck!!

My oldest daughter graduated from high school two years ago and we had a pool/carnival party. Actually, we had two parties on the same day, one in the early afternoon for family members and then another one in the late afternoon for daughter's friends. We doubled up on the food and cooked-out twice.

Food included hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, dip, veggie platters, and graduation cake. We filled a small plastic wading pool with ice and loaded it with a variety of canned soft drinks.

The highlight of both parties, however, was the big, inflatable castle we rented. The high school kids had a blast jumping around in it. In fact, one of my daughter's friends came up to me at the end of the party and said he had the best time he's had in a long time. What a nice young man! It worked out well, because younger family members got to use the castle before all the high school kids arrived. Once the older kids got there in the afternoon, most of the family members had left, so the high school kids had the castle all to themselves. To go along with a carnival atmosphere, we rented an old fashioned popcorn popper, (the kind that looks like a wagon with big wheels), and a cotton candy maker. They were both big hits. Kids liked making their own cotton candy!

Decorations were kept fairly simple, a lot of balloons in the high school colors, a few Happy Graduation banners, and another large balloon bouquet tied to the mailbox in front of the house.

One of my daughter's friends played DJ, (we paid him a small fee at the end of the party), and he kept the CD's and albums going.

We also ordered from Oriental Trading, (and they were very
inexpensive), four dozen, small, colorful beach balls, which we inflated and put in the pool before the party. We also ordered little pom-pom guys with the wiggly eyes and tags attached that said Happy Graduation. They were also very inexpensive. Anyone who wanted to, took home a beach ball and pom-pom critter.

The parties were a lot of fun, and thankfully, we had nice weather. I don't know what we would have done if it had rained!

Just a few thoughts- I found it interesting that most of the high school kids didn't use the pool. Some of them went swimming, but even they didn't remain in the pool for long. However, the younger kids loved the pool, even more than the castle, I think.

High schoolers eat a lot of food, so make sure you have plenty on hand!

Do as much preparing before the party as possible, so that you can relax and enjoy the party, also. Take lots of photos and have fun!

I don't know where in PA you are, but there are many caterers in the Allentown area that do Pig Roasts/Clam Bakes. I did this for my brother's graduation party . Pricey, but worth it IMO. No set up/no clean up!

They brought all the side dishes (even home made horseradish for on the pork) and it was SOOOOO delish! I did this more as a gift to my mom so she could relax and not worry about cooking. We also had the little things (veggie trays, wings, fruit platters, cheese trays, etc.) catered from a local deli and it was not that expensive.

The key is to relax and enjoy your baby's party!!!!

I'm printing out the suggestions - thanks to everyone!!:D

Anyone else??

Great thread topic!! My dd also graduates this year ~ May 28!! I am looking at doing either a taco or pasta bar. Both are very easy, and very low maintenance! My family owns a family entertainment center, so her party will be there! We have go-karts, bumper boats, mini golf, bumper cars, lazer paint ball, batting cages, and an arcade! I thought about having it at the camp ground so we would have the lake and relaxation.......but I don't know what we would do with everyone if the weather did not cooperate for her day! At least at the FEC, we still have things people could do if the weather was yucky!

For all of us with graduates...........I am not sure whether to say *Congratulations* or *Condolences*!! I am so sad that she is a grown young lady, instead of *my little girl*. Well, she will always be *my little girl*, but I'm sure you know what I mean! I cannot believe that my dd is graduating.......it seems just yesterday that I loaded her on the big yellow bus for the first time! I do have one more.......my ds is 12 and in 7th grade, so I have to find the *Magic stop button* to freeze him from growing up anymore!!!

Happy party planning to you all!!! :p :teeth:

My DD graduated last year. We had a party in the backyard. The tent we rented for 'insurance' did its job--we had a beautiful day.

I had too much food, because the kids all had multiple parties to go to and didn't eat much. Take that into account when you're planning.

We had:

Platters of sub sandwiches (3" size) from the kids' favorite sandwich shop.
Baked Beans
Pasta Salad
Fruit Salad (just cut up fruit--it was the biggest hit)
Hot Potato Casserole
Cake

I put a CD together of tons of photos of DD growing up and added music to it. I still cry when I watch it.

Have fun planning. And good luck with the goodbyes!
