Does anyone know if you can bring a GPS in a carryon bag on Spirit Air? We will be using it in a rented car.

Not sure about Spirit, but I was fine with mine on American not too long ago. It is not a TSA prohibited item.

I would say as long as it's turned off while you're on the plane it would be fine.

not only are they allowed on through carryon, but some airlines may even allow their usage mid-flight (according to one source i found, spirit does not have a policy either way, so it's best to ask if it's something you want to do).

(can't find anything on their site even remotely related to using electronics onboard.. but you can substitute antlers for checked baggage)

Even if it's "on" while in-flight (read: not during take-off and landing) it might be okay since the unit is a receiver...not a transmitter.

Perhaps calling the airline would answer your question, due to carrier-specific rules.

Since you are in a metal tube it may not see the satellites

Don't know about other GPS units, but my Magellan 760 does not have a "portable" power supply. It has to be powered by either the outlet on my vehicle or an inside the house plug. (It requires the inside the house plug to hook it to the computer to download upgraded maps.)

I took one (Garmin PDA type) on a spirit flight within the last few weeks.

1. It's OK to carry on

2. With a window seat I have gotten a signal on many aircraft. It's cool to see altitude / speed / mileage etc.

Cool, Now I can't wait to try mine out on the plane!!

check with your airline to see if its allowed during flight however.

the plane channel is my favorite on JB.
