Hey Everyone,

My husband works for the govt and as of Monday he will be come one of the many furloughed employees. Our Disney trip was scheduled for two weeks from this past Wednesday but I will have to cancel. Has anyone experienced a financial hardship and had Disney refund their trip or tickets without insurance? We are DVC so it's really just the tickets that I would like refunded.

Thanks in advance!

I'm so sorry to hear that! Have you tried to call them yet? I'm not sure what will happen but since it's such a big problem maybe they will be willing to work with you.

My DH is a federal employee too but he is essential so he is working on an IOU at this moment. He is NOT happy at all because he is supposed to be on vacation this week but he can't take off. Our Disney trip is also due to be paid off next week and I'm holding off until 30 days out, unless we hear something before then.

I will be so glad when this is over.

Sorry you have to cancel your trip, but be glad he is a federal employee instead of a contractor. Federal employees are likely to get back pay, but contractors will simply be SOL!

That really stinks. We had just paid off our 2009 package in October of that year when I was told I was being laid off at the end of December of that year. Our trip was set for the 1st week of December. We went ahead and went because everything was paid off. I'm glad we did- it gave us something to look forward to. Fortunately I was getting a severance package, so the money spent wasn't too big of a deal. I would wait and cancel at the very last minute that you can, though. This crazy shutdown business can change quickly and you would hate to cancel and then still be able to go if the shutdown ends. Good luck!

I heard a little while ago that civil service will continue to be paid, so maybe you won't have to cancel. :)

Even if you do decide to cancel, your tickets won't expire, so you could just keep them, postpone the use of your DVC points and wait to go. Unless you really need the money back to pay bills, of course. Once the tickets are paid for, the next biggest expense would be your food, which of course you wouldn't have to spend if you didn't go.
