Between summer furloughs and now more time without pay, this is killing my Disney Fund! I am sure I am not the only one although it looks like unless Congress gets their act together we may have to skip Disney:( We have shaved so much off our budget from getting rid of cable, shopping at cheaper grocery store, getting rid of gym memberships etc to be able to afford Disney and now this! so frustrating!!! Anyone else directly impacted by the government shutdown?

I wonder if the Congressmen/women are going to take a pay cut since they didn't work? Highly doubt it. And they don't know why the people aren't very fond of them.. I know that when I was furloughed by the railroad I didn't get paid and it was pretty rough. Luckily I found a new job within a month and that helped.

We are. It's hard not to panic. It will directly affect our Disney plans. I am trying to be positive.

Last time there was a shutdown, when things opened up the Congresscritters authorized "non-essential" people who were furloughed to be paid as if they had worked on their normal schedule. My late wife and I were both affected by this.

Really sorry for you and all others that are effected by this. While I am not directly effected, everyone will be effected in some way due to the financial impact. I hope it is cleared up quickly and they vote to pay those furloughed as they did last time.

On a more important note: Hopefully this will still be remembered when election time comes around again and each and every incumbent is voted out of office. That way maybe we can get back to our representatives representing the people and not themselves. I know it will never happen, but one can hope. Again, truly sorry that you have to deal with the penalties of our government being dysfunctional.

I'm actually quite happy with the behavior of my congress critters, I'll vote to re elect mine. Don't blame them at all for the shut down.

Not all incumbents need to go but many do. They overstay their "service". There's a reason we have term limits for the office of President. We need these for Congress, also.

I am not directly affected by the shutdown but know several people who are. I hope for your sake (and theirs) that they get this settled quickly and all can go back to work.

I know we can not discuss politics so i will just leave it at that and go on my way...:wave2:

I don't agree, but that gets into politics, which we don't talk about here.

Anyway, OP, I hope the shutdown is short lived - for your sake and all our sakes, and I hope Congress decides to pay federal employees for this time and that refills your Disney fund.

congressional term limits would be the single best thing for this country. That alone would solve so many of the country's problems.

Unfortunately that probably won't be the case for people who work for government contractors. If I end up getting furloughed because the government shutdown goes on for more than a month or so, I can pretty much guarantee my company won't be giving me back pay for that time off.

Our Disney dreams have sailed. Today is DH's birthday. He got furloughed yesterday. Normally we spend his birthday at Disney. He requests to eat at 50's Prime Time every year for his birthday. And we do the food and wine festival. Thanks to the furloughs earlier this year, this year's trip was cancelled. We are already planning for more furloughs next year. As soon as we have pay checks again, I am going to start putting what we don't spend on our grocery bill from the budget into the savings account. I am scared that it will happen again next year so I would rather start preparing as soon as we are able to.

I'm a federal employee. I'm not counting on reimbursement. This is a different time and era. A lot of people think of non-military federal employees as necessary evils. And they specifically hate me. I'm IRS out of Cincinnati, although my office had absolutely nothing to do with the mishandled tea party applications.

We're going to WDW late this month, and our trip is still on. Our tickets and lodging are already paid for (lodging via our timeshare points). I have several hundred dollars in Disney gift cards to pay for meals. We're fine right now, but if this furlough lasts another week or so, it may dip into our Christmas. And possibly next year vacation.

I don't have high hopes either, but it is what I do hope. And my congress people have been written to let them know it is the only right thing to do.

I understand that some live paycheck to paycheck. BTDT for many years. Now that my DH is a GS 11 and I work full time, we have savings for times like this.
But I don't understand the panic over saving for your trip. You will get paid. You will get the money to put into your savings. And you did get paid last week. So unless your trip is in the next week, relax. It comes out in the wash.

Some of them have said they won't be receiving a paycheck during the shutdown, though I'm sure it has absolutely zero impact on their personal budget.

Right now, only the military is guaranteed payment (they will continue to be paid on time).

Whether others will receive back pay or not is still to be decided.

Seems to me that that is assumption is based on expecting to get retroactive pay. There are numerous articles that suggest that we just plain lose on this... no reimbursement! :rolleyes2
