Well after some number crunching, we or should I say big oil companies made our decision to get rid of one our trucks:mad: .

When it is costing us over $800 min. a month to fuel them at todays prices it wasn't hard. The old girl in the back is for sale but I need to keep the other one to tow the fishing boat. So we ended up buying a '08 G5 with a small 4 cyl. engine with the drivers package (sunroof, power windows, upgraded stereo, aluminium rims).

The CAA trip calculator says it will only cost $310 round trip to Disney compared to the Silverado at $760. Guess which one is going to Florida in Dec.
The funny thing is we both loved the trucks but now we are fighting over who gets to drive the putt, putt.:rotfl: This is the first little car I have ever owned and I love it but I had to get the windows tinted so no one can see me. :rotfl2:

Chris.

I just bought a G5 at Nurse in Whitby too! It has been an excellent car so far. :)

Don't be surprised to find the GM workers outside your house tonight.:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Seriously, congrats on the new wheels and doing your part for the environment.:thumbsup2 I'm from Oakville where auto manufacturing is also a big deal. Luckily for us, Ford is adding shifts.

We bought ours at Bissels in Ajax because of their service department. They have gone above and beyond in helping me with the after market warranty company who can go fly a kite. I would say something stronger but this is a family site.:)

Did you get the drivers package on yours?

I to am from Oakville. We have just shut down 5 lines at the GE Lighting Plant here due to a shift in the market, alot of our guys are heading over to Ford. The Ford plant in Oakville I beleive is the only plant in North America adding production at this time. It's weird how this is happening. Sorry to the Guys and gals in Oshawa but it's about time our guys and gals in Oakville get a break. Usually they get hit first.

They are only three blocks away and I bought GM so I'm OK.

Unfortunately I can't feel bad for all of them, living in Oshawa I have a few nearby. First off bragging that you have a job for life and joking about work. The joke is "Hide and Seek for a Thousand a week!" and some of the other tales I've heard after a few beers it's no wonder GM is shutting down a plant here. One actually bragged he could beat a manger, go to jail and the union would get his job back when he got out. Is it possible:confused3 who knows but it wouldn't surprise me if it were true. This whole seniority thing breeds laziness and entitlement. What is wrong with being judged on your performance and work ethic and not on how long you have been there. A guy down the street only has 11or 12 years in and knows he is toast so he has been taking advantage of some program to better himself and find another job. He will loose his job because the guys above have more time in and will be transfered to the car plant. Others are blocking headquarters lead by their union hoping that action will change the future, sorry guys it's going and not coming back.. Word has it GM is hoping for a Wildcat strike so they can save some money on not building trucks that are not selling anyway.

Do they think management is that stupid. Not! They still think the union is going to fix this and all will return to normal. For all the people there that put in an honest days work I am sorry. But for the guys I talked about above looks good on you, killing the golden goose isn't easy but you managed it. Go over to Park Place and have another beer at lunch break or two or three as usual and drown your sorrows.

Sorry about the rant I have no idea where that came from.:rotfl2:

Chris.

After weeks of debate, I managed to get my father to trade his Ford van in. He is 73, and had put 17000km on it in 5 years. It cost him almost $100 to fill it , at about 20 mpg(good thing he seldom drove it), and he was the only one in it. I persuaded him to get something smaller. He bought a Pontiac Wave, with Sun roof, spoiler, etc. and loves it. Best part is, lower insurance and almost 50 MPG.

I feel like I've seen this thread somewhere else.

We have two sort of GM products a '02 Saturn SL1 4 banger that gets incredible gas mileage for an older car and a Saturn Vue..lucky for us we got the plastic Vue with the V6 Honda engine and full powertrain so even with that semi gas guzzler we get 30 mpg on the highway - better if we keep it under 110km/hr. Don't buy the new all metal Vue with the Gm v6..I understand the best mpg you can get is about 23 and that is going slow...

Neither my wife of I drive to work - duhh so why do we have 2 cars - don't know..

And I lived in Oshawa for quite a while earlier in my life - when Gm was producing so many gas guzzling cars they didn't care.. a quick story - we had a VW Scirocco - that got an ignition problem that was really easy and cheap to fix but, I am not mechanically inclined, so anyway, it naturally would not start one night - of course it had to be in a parking lot right across from the old GM south plant in Oshawa..as my car was being towed to Owasco ( free of charge btw) the workers actually lined up inside and outside and cheered..no I am not kidding..after that instance..I had NO respect for any of them again. First all, it is my decision to buy whatever car I want -but all I can say is back then they made crappy cars and I wanted one that would work ( you ever hear the old saying never buy a Monday or a Friday car - well it used to be true until robots came in ), and what in heck where they all doing on break at the same time - where are the supervisors?

I am sure GM management is just hoping for a wildcat stike - do you think they care - there is already a glut of trucks not selling in the US..just watch the US news or CNN for a second they had a long section on the change in the US car buying habits....trucks are sitting on the lots with very very steap discounts and SUV trade ins are worth nothing.

Also Oshawa is not the only one hit GM closed down 4 truck lines and 2 SUV lines - Oshawa was just one - the rest were in the US..and with the present US admin do you really think they even care about jobs in Canada - hardly.

So, I know how everyone feels living in that area..I would defintely keep my foreign care in the garage at nights...or make sure you have full comprehensive insurance

Cute car! Love it! I am sure you'll smile at the pump...

Always been a GM supporter..but every time there are layoffs get very ticked with the attitude of the workers. I could tell tales about my BIL that at one time- was head of the Truck division in Oshawa-but I won't...people aren't buying the gas guzzlers (except Ninnies like me!!) and so it makes total sense that if the work isn't there..welllllll then the company lays off??? They are in business to make money after all..not charitable donations to keep the workers happy? Me thinks they have had it too good for too long! Wake up call time! My 2 cents..

Good choice!! I'm sure you'll be much happier pumping the gas and seeing a much lower bill!!

We will be starting to look about Jan Feb next year for something to replace my gas guzzling MPV aka Most Problematic Vehicle. I really don't need a van anymore just want something that's going to save me on gas!! Don't really want GM or Ford either - we prefer Toyota!!

We actually didn't get any package at all. Just the basic necessities. In March, my 11 year old car started overheating and I was told that if I kept driving it... it would catch on fire. So, needless to say, I had to buy my new one on impulse and with little warning :)

My dad has a G5 and only fills it once every 2 weeks and he only drives in the city. My mom just traded in her Impala for a new 09 Vibe which she loves and the price was right also. Enjoy the new G5 they are fun little cars to drive we rented one for a couple days it was a 2 door and man was it fun to drive and good on gas.

Chris.

Rumour has it that after they close the truck plant GM plans to re tool it to produce cars so who knows how long it will truly be down. This comes from a family member who is in management with GM in that area.

I wonder what the MPG is on this?

If I am not mistaken the silver thing behind the weights is about a 5 gallon tank and is good for some idling and about 300ft of a tractor pull track. 1/4 tank a mile maybe??

It is a hoot to drive and are waiting to run through a tank of gas to see the mileage numbers. No matter how you cut it it is way better than the '95 GMC and the stereo is kick but amazing. It reminds me of the good old days and the aftermarket stereo upgrades we use to do.

Look at me waxing poetic about the good old days at the ripe old age of 39.:rotfl2:

LOL I too am 39 and remember the good old days of aftermarket stereos. I had a kick **** stereo in my 80something Chevette. I had an MEI headunit and MEI 50 watt amp and EQ and mei component speakers up front and 6X9's in boxes in the hatchback LOL.

MEI, Oh my god that brings back memories. My buddy Mark still has an MEI amp in his basement. My dad use to wonder how I could drive around in a car that costs less than the stereo in it.:rotfl2:

I still have a Sony Head unit, Orion 150 amp, single 12 inch Rockford Fosgate in a box and another 10 inch Cerwin Vega in another box and a bunch of speakers and wires.

Hows that for memories 4disneyfan?
