Someone stole our account number and made a bunch of charges in Ohio. The charges (3 of them totalling about $450) raised a red flag because they were from a cell phone company we have never used.

At least we know our CC company is on top of things. They said we will not have to pay the charges and they closed the account. They are issuing us a new account.

I heard BJs got hacked recently, so maybe that's where it was stolen from.

Very creepy.

i had the same thing about 2 months ago they charged 1500 in womens clothing and shoes,i only use this one card for purchasing corvette parts for my car so it through up a red flag.Good thing they caught it and your cc doesnt make you pay it,nice to have fraud protection, i added it to all my cards.

Yikes! I worry about this sort of thing.

I'm glad your cc company was on top of it and caught it.

:wave2: Hi fellow Jerseyan!

It really behooves the cc company to be alert, because they wind up getting soaked.

On the bright side, it's nice to know that your CC company is on top of things and watching out for you.

You might want to check any other accounts you have as well for fradulent transactions - just in case it wasn't just this card.

You can also place a fraud alert on your credit with the major credit bureaus by contacting them. Basically what will happen is that they will flag you accounts so that if someone tries to open a card in your name, they have to call from your home phone number. This prevents them from going to department stores and trying to open new accounts using your identity.

mom2alix--thanks for some great advice. I just checked my only other card and everything is as it should be.

Any idea what the major credit bureaus are? I could not find a link for TRW.

A warning about this - -

There is a scam going around where you will get a call allegedly from your CC company checking for fradualent charges.

The key - if they ask for your 3 digit identifier number that is printed on the back of your credit card (usually on the signature strip) IT IS A SCAM!!!!!!!!

There is absolutely no reason for your CC company to ask for this #, THEY already know it. But without it, it is extremely difficult to charge something fradualently without the actual card. With it, the sky's the limit.

It's good that ya'lls CC companies are vigilant. Just make sure when you get a call, it is actually THEM, & not someone trying to rip you off.

JimB.--You are so right and I am aware of this scam. I was asked for nothing and volunteered nothing in the way of account numbers, personal info, etc. I asked for his name and phone number and the main customer service number as well, in case I became suspicious.

He asked for DH (main name on account) and ID'd himself. He had my name as the second person on the account. All he wanted to do was ask about some suspicious charges and he asked me to check to see if both cards were still in our possession. He ran down the most recent charges before the flagged charges, and they were legit and correct.

Experian, Equifax and TransUnion are the 3 credit report places.

Experian

I had a similar, yet different experience in the spring. Someone got a hold of my bank info and signature and cashed two checks against my account. My bank notified me immediately, closed my account, etc.

I notified all my CC companies and they all cancelled my accounts and issued new cards.

Also called all credit bureaus and placed them on notice.

Good luck.

Thanks Sweet Angel. I guess it was just a matter of time before we got stung, since we hear about cc and ID fraud every day.

What a world.

I too am dealing with fraudulant charges made Tuesday on my card. Mine was with Capitol One. The only thing I can think of was we used the card quite a bit in Europe in July. The cc company didn't accept the charges because the person who stole my number didn't have the right expiration date. It's really scary that someone can have access to so much info.

We just got an email fro Discover Card about some scamming going around. Details were on their website.

It IS scary.

Maybe I'll go back to writing checks. But, that's not foolproof either.

herc.

This sort of happened to me recently. Someone cloned my checkcard and ran up close to $1000 in charges. Fortunately, I caught it the same day (I do online banking several days a week). It was also easier to dispute since I was at work when it happened and the charges were 3000 miles away in Tampa.
THe bank quickly got the money back in my account and all of my credit card accounts were fine.
One thing I will change as a precautionary measure is to stop using credit cards at restaurants. I've heard that there have been instances where waiters can duplicate the info. when it's out of your sight. Better safe than sorry I guess.
No matter how diligent we are, the crooks somehow still find a way.

I am also concerned about the restaurant thing, because they take your card out of your sight and can easily copy all the info. Same thing with some gas stations (NJ does not have self serve) . Since this was our AAA card, we always use it to buy gas and get a discount.

Just a couple months ago on our Business cc there was a charge I didn't reconize. So I called the cc company. They said they would check it out and call back. When they called back they said it was a Accounting Company from Aus. We have a small company in Michigan. We don't do business outside of Michigan. No way did we make that charge. The cc company removed the charge.

I am a little bit supisious as the card had not been used in over a year and I had just recently gotten our Trans Union credit report online. Of course that cc was included in the report.

A few months ago I had a fraud problem also. The only place someone could have gotten that number was from the issuing bank. Last December I got an offer for a card with Fleet Bank it was for 0 interest for a year on balance transfers. I opened it and only did a balance transfer from another card I had. Never used the card anywhere. I get a notice in the mail that I was over my limit, called and found 3 large charges that were not mine. Called they told me they would close the account and send me an affadavit (sp?). 2 weeks went by didn't get the papers so called them again was told I need to call the fraud department they gave me the number. Call there is a recording that they are too busy leave your name and number they will call you back. 2 days go by finally get the paperwork though no return phone call. Called again same recording, finally they call 2 days later and there's another charge on the account. I said I thought you closed that account how could there be another charge? She told me they don't close it until they get the papers back from customer. Get my next statement they have taken the first 3 charges off, but since those made me over the limit they have charged me for overlimit and started charging interest. Finally after too many phone calls it was finally straightened out just last month. 2 weeks ago I get a notice they didn't receive my payment. I do all my payments online, get my account up on the screen call them give them the reference number from the payment, he tells me to hold on comes back on the line tells me they will investigate but I should make another payment so its not reflected on my credit as a late payment. I said to him are you nuts, my checking account is a Fleet account the payment went to Fleet credit card it clears the next day. He says well thats what my supervisor said to tell you. I asked to speak to the supervisor he made every exuse not to put the supervisor on. I got frustrated and hung up. I made another payment now it will be paid off in November instead of December.
Then goodby Fleet or Bank of America no more credit acct, no checking or savings I'll move them all.

Did not know that about the gas stations in NJ. Learn something new everyday! One of the fraudulent charges was for a gas station. I've noticed in California when you use your CC at the gas pump, you almost always have to enter your billing zip code at the pump to. The exception has been in the rural areas.
