Hello all! It has been a while since I have read any good books. I used to love to read when I was in my 20's but here lately it seems all I have time for is my magazines and my favorite online sites.

Just wanted some suggestions for some good books to read by the pool or just sitting out on the back porch. I love Nora Roberts, so any suggestions there would be great too! Also...has anyone read 50 shades of Grey? I was thinking about some thing along those lines.

Thanks in advance!! :goodvibes

Some fairly light reading I've enjoyed over the last year or so:

--"A Year In Provence," a travel memoir by Peter Mayle;

--"What The Dog Saw," a collection of New Yorker essays by Malcolm Gladwell;

--"I Remember Me," a memoir by Carl Reiner.

And a classic I haven't read in a while, but it would be a very fun and engaging beach book if you haven't read it yet: "The Count of Monte Cristo," by Alexandre Dumas.

Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter; first book is The Darkest Night- paranormal romance, hot reads like 50 Shades without the S&M

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - not a fluff book by any means, but hands down the best book I have ever read. Excellent writing and character development; it you don't fall in love Jamie there is something wrong with you!

The Shoemaker's Wife by Adrianna Trigiani

The Aviator's Wife by ? (I can't remember but it is a historical fiction book about Anne Morrow Linbergh)

Also...has anyone read 50 shades of Grey?

I've read all three 50 shades books multiple times. They're really good and fun to read. If you have concerns about people judging, read them on your phone or an ereader. IMO, the love story is the best part, not the sex scenes but those are fun too! ;)

LOVE Diana Gabaldon!!! Fascinating premise and if you like the first one there are at least 5-6 more and she is still writing more!!

I second the Outlander series. The first book was my favorite, but I like them all. I also LOVE the In Death series, I highly recommend it.

I hated 50 shades of grey, thought they were just awful.

If you're a history buff, I reccommend both Killing Kennedy and Killing Lincoln. (I thought Lincoln was the better of the two, but really enjoyed both.)

And if you've never read Gone with the Wind, you really owe it to yourself to read it!!!

I too love Nora Roberts.

I highly recommend the Three Sisters Trilogy (Dance Upon the Air, Heaven and Earth, Face the Fire). They were the first Nora books that I have read, and they got me hooked on Nora :thumbsup2

ITA! I just finished that trilogy, am looking for something new of hers to load onto the Kindle right now!

I'm glad I found this thread! I was looking for something "good" to read for my trip in two weeks. Last years vacation I (& everyone else reading around me) had a 50 shades of Grey series in their hand. Lol. Looks like it'll be the Outlander series this year. Thanks for the suggestions!

Wedding Night, by Sophie Kinsella. Sexy and absolutely HILARIOUS. So funny.

Anything by Sophie Kinsella is a good read. :)

I enjoyed the trilogy too! :)

Nora Roberts is AKA- J.D. Robb. She has an, "In Death" series. I have enjoyed the installments a lot. Love, love, love, Lt. Eve Dallas the tough heroine in the series. I finish one and come back to the series from time to time.

She has a whole different style under this pseudonym but I love the plot every time! :) Mystery, romance, murder all rolled into one. Something for everyone!

Oh, here is a link to one of her books:

All these great suggestions. I need a longer vacation to read them all! Lol.

I'm reading something good right now that I will recommend. I'm about 25% in and just started it late last night - I really like it so far! :goodvibes The Last Original Wife by Dorothea Benton Frank.

If you liked those then read her bride quartet series. The first one is Vision in White, and the others are Bed of Roses, Savor the Moment and Happy Ever After.

It's the story of 4 best friends who own a wedding business. One is the photographer, one does the flowers, one bakes the cakes and the fourth is the wedding planner. They are all great characters, and all 4 are featured prominently in all 4 books. I've read them all several tmes.

Along the same lines as Nora Roberts but a little (lot?) steamier, is the Sullivan Series by Bella Andre. There are 8 books about 8 siblings and they are a very good read. I was hooked after the first one and didn't want them to end after the 8th one. Apparently I wasn't alone, because so many people have written to her that they were sad to see them end, that she has just started a new series about the Sullivans'cousins. I just finished rhe first one in tha series and it was good as well. :)

You won't regret the Outlander series. The first book is a bit dry until page 58-then it gets really good! Miniseries begins filming this fall for Starz.

If you have an kindle (or non-nook) reader: Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim is currently available on Amazon for $0.00. it is a good book, a heartwarming story; however, it is not a "great" book. (Personally - this is a great book to download - just to have for a rainy day...)

If you want a thriller...can't put it down type of book...Still Missing by Chevy Stevens is a fabulous book - is available on Amazon Kindle for $2.99. This was a great book!
