Good, sturdy, long lasting luggage? That won't break the bank?

Hi there! Looking for new luggage - again. Thought we had found some good stuff about 2 years ago. Now, just a handful of trips in, the big suitcase has a huge hole in it :( Ugh.

We would like to go with some flexible hard sided stuff this time, with spinner wheels, preferably, but would like to get some recommendations from people who travel frequently.

We need at least a 28 inch and would not mind a 2-3 piece set. Keeping it under a few hundred, please!

Thanks!!!!

Just be aware that for checked baggage, spinner wheels would be the first point of failure. They stick out so things get caught and when bags shift and a lot of weight could shift onto the wheel. They get used as a handle to move the bag into the aircraft. Also due to them protruding from the bag, when they do break, most airlines don't repair or replace.

In early 1998, I won a set of 5th Avenue luggage in a contest. 16 years later, that stuff still looks brand new. I'm not sure if the quality is still as good, but it might be worth looking into.

We bought a set of Delsey hard sided luggage 30 years ago. Divider inside one is just now coming loose, so time for repair or replacement.

I agree, wheels are a common failure point, as are zippers, which is why I would never consider softsided luggage. But now I am seeing hard sided luggage with zippers. I don't get that, just seems like you are asking for it to fail.

Most people who travel frequently don't use 28" bags; those are huge!

There are many threads on this subject here. If you do a search, you'll find a lot of information.

I got these a few years ago.

That's the 29", but it comes in different sizes. I have that one, the carry on, and the mid-sized piece (can't remember the inches) and have been very pleased. No zippers, and the latches have never failed. The wheels have all stood up well, too. No breaks. The only noticeable thing is, after many trips, the shell is scuffed and not as pretty as it used to be, but that's just wear, not functional.

Go to TJMaxx and pick out a decent-but-inexpensive replacement. Toss it when it breaks.

We have a couple of these bags too - love them!

We bought various pieces of Delsey Helium many years ago and my kids and grandkids are still using them. But they aren't hard-sided.

About 5 years (and about 20 flights) ago we purchased the Samsonite XSpace spinners - the 30" and the next size down (I can't remember exactly what the size is) and the boarding bag. They look a little dusty, but still function perfectly. The only issue we ever have is that it's SO easy to overpack the large suitcase and end up over the weight limit.

I'm not sure if Samsonite still sells that line (we bought on ebags) but I know several other frequent travelers who swear by the brand.

Heys luggage. Get it at TJMaxx/Marshalls for a great price. I was even able to get the Disney print there.

If you're willing to pay a fair price for high-quality luggage, look into Briggs and Riley. Their bags will hold up, and are warranted for all damage.

I found a matching set at a thrift store. Has held up rather well for last five years now. Samsonite set for $20. Was a great bargain! If you're into thift stores or resale stores, might be worth checking out. If not, then hope you find what you need! :thumbsup2

I bought a set at Target for 75% off and they are over 14 years old. We fly on the average of 2 times a year and still going. They have wheels and they work well. We had Samsonite and it didn't last nearly as long.
