Good debit card warning

Unfortunately this has been a problem with credit cards/debit cards for a while. I know here in NJ/Philly area there was a rash of "skimmers" on gas station pumps.

Also check with your bank. When I use my debit card I always try and hit the credit button (unless I want cash back) and have it process as a credit transaction. this won't stop some one with a skimmer but my credit union will cover all losses that way.

You know if crooks spent as much time being a legitimate entrapaneur as they do being crooks they would probably be rich.

It seemed to work for Frank Abagnale.

Very true. He's done quite a job turning his illegal fun into profits.

As for debit card/credit card issues, there is a big difference. Your credit card is stollen and you can stop the card before any money leaves you. Your debit card number is stollen and they wipe out your account, you then have to wait for the bank to put the money back in. It's just not worth the risk.

We've had our debit card skimmed twice. Both times we used the same corner store and the same gas station that day. I never did find out which place it was.

The card that was skimmed is for an account that doesn't hold too much. We transfer weekly money into it and use it for groceries and gas etc and leave the rest in another account. So the thieves weren't able to get much and it was returned within a few weeks I think. I do remember there were signs up at the banks in town alerting customers because we live in a small town and it had happened to just a TON of people. We all use the same few stores, gas pumps etc so it was easy to get everyone.

They have arrested several people here in SoCal for doing this on ATMs. You have to be cautious and aware.

They do this on both credit and debit cards. We've had ours skimmed once and the bank caught it right away and all charges were covered under the bank's fraud protection on our account.
