Going to SW & ZOO, do I need to stay right in San Diego?

I finally did get into contact with the family member and the hotel is Hampton, however I the hotel itself isn't on a beach, it is on a marina/waterfront. There is free breakfast as I stated and there is a water taxi you can take that is a short distance from the hotel to Corodado Island, where there is beaches located. They have stayed at the hotel once before and love it. LMK if you have any other questions.

You are so sweet to have gone to the trouble. Thank you. I booked Bay Club but I'm going to look up Hampton to see - I love that I have something booked but can be cancelled. ;)

I don't know if you have AAA but I am a member and used their website and got a room at the Comfort Inn for President's week and got a great deal. I got a room on Hotel Circle which is really close to everything and I think I am paying like 80 bucks a night. I have stayed in that area in the past and it is decent. AAA has good deals and you only have to do the guarantee with them.

We are also doing the zoo and seaworld and then heading up to Disney for the second half of our trip.

Good luck and have fun! :)

We stayed at the La Jolla shores Hotel over the Christmas holidays and went to Sea World (10 minute drive) and Zoo (15 minute drive). If you are renting a car I would highly recommend getting a GPS. We did and it was worth every penny. did not waste any time getting lost. The rate we paid at the hotel was $179/night. Right on the beach! About 2 weeks before we left the total price of the hotel went down $100 and they actually emailed and told us about it. Enjoy your trip!

I love the looks of that place, but according to my dates, a garden room is $369 per night!! A little too steep. It didn't offer AAA for those dates either, but I doubt that would've made it doable. Thanks for the suggestion!

Our hotel is twice the price from winter to summer, as I suspect most hotels are....

I still haven't narrowed down my choices of SD hotels... sigh

I don't remember when you are going, however, if you are doing the zoo and SW I would do SW during the week, because of the crowds and do the zoo, on the weekend. . I've had AP's for both and it was just nicer during the week at SW imho. . .. the zoo tends to have lots of schools during the week there (keeping in mind some schools in san diego city schools do not end the school year until july21st this year and that last week or two will be filled with 5th graders in balboa park every day of the week as that is what they get to do for their last week of school).

as for where you plan to say, sea world is in mission bay, the zoo in balboa park, really just minutes from each other. . .

hth.

Oh wow, thanks for the info. With your post and the other person who suggested combining the zoo with Balboa Park on that Saturday, that's what I think I'll do and then do SW on that Monday. Thanks!!
