I'm off to Ottawa for the weekend - never been before. Any suggestions for a first timer? (I know we're already planning on going to the National Art Gallery) Anyone know of where they hold services for Remembrance Day - we're at the Novotel so I think we're pretty close to everything.
Suggestions and comments are welcome!

With respect to Remembrance Day services, you will be very close to the National War Memorial. It is at the top of Elgin Street where it intersects with Wellington Street, right in front of the Chateau Laurier hotel. You are no more than a 5 minute walk from the Novotel. It is very moving to see the ceremonies there, and I would highly recommend it.

The Market area (en route between your hotel and the National Art Gallery) is full of great restaurants and cafes and interesting shops. You'll find lots to keep you busy. Since you've never been before, I would also recommend the Canadian Museum of Civilization, which is right across the bridge behind the National Art Gallery. It is beautiful, and there is a great IMAX theatre there too.

You are also right behind the Rideau Centre, which is the major downtown shopping centre. It's worth a visit as well...

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Have a great trip,

Thanks so much. I'm really looking forward to my visit. Already sounds like I may need to go back again!

Just to add that the Museum of civilization have a great hands on children section that my kids alone can spend 3/4 of a day. Love the walkthru Canadian section. Timing is something to consider. We have tried to go on a Sunday when they have special admission price BUT it is so crowded! I think everyone saves this one for Sunday. Would have gladly pay extra to go on another day.

Are you taking your children? My children love the Museum of Civilization. It is a great museum for all ages. The kids section is a lot of hands on fun and they have passports for the different countries with stamps at each station.

Parliament Hill is quite impressive if you have never been. The last time I was there you sign up for a tour time at a tent and then go to the door at your time. Security is tight but it is a great place to visit. Real close to you.

Another new museum - if you like museums - is the Canadian War Museum and they have a ticket offer with the Museum of Civilization. The War Museum is quite interesting architecturally. It looks like a bunker. When you walk in the floor is uneven, making you feel slightly off balance like a soldier in the trenches perhaps.

The Rideau Centre is good downtown also the Sparks Street 'mall' is fun to walk down. It is a street converted into a pedestrian walking zone. Some fun shops there. Byward Market is fun too. Lots of interesting restaurants.

It is just a pretty area to look around as well. You will have fun.

Have lots of fun. Deb

The Rememberance Day ceremonies are a big deal here in Ottawa -- as they should be. A lot of things will be closed on Saturday morning (they usually re-open afternoon about 12 noon.)

As mentioned by some other posters, staying at the Novotel you'll be right downtown close to the landmarks (Parliament Hill, Chateau Laurier, etc...), shopping (Rideau Center, Market area, there's a craft show this weekend at the Congress Centre if you're into that, etc....), museums (National Gallery, Museum of Civilization, War Museum, etc..), restaurants, etc... .

You're sort of between seasons for the canal to be an attraction (in the summer it's nice with boat tours, etc.... in the winter you can skate, look at the ice sculptures, and eat Beaver Tails (pastries served warm with toppings).)

Welcome and have a great time.
