I'm looking for a little help/advise on a hotel. We are going to a dance competition at the Museum of Civilzation in Gatineau at the end of April. I currently have booked the Four Points Sheraton right across the street but I really hate staying were all the dancers are staying...it gets really loud at night. Anyway, last time around we stayed at the BW Victoria Park suites on the Ottawa side and while it was nice it was a little removed from things. This will be our only weekend away so we would like a nice hotel with pool but don't want to spend over $130 per night if possible.

Any and all suggestions would be fantastic.....thanks!

We spent a week in Ottawa this summer. We stayed at the Chimo Hotel on St. Laurent Blvd. It was nothing special but the price was right. This might have been a summer special rate but we paid $109/night and that included their full buffet breakfast in the restaurant. It had an OK pool and a hottub that doesn't work. It is right across the street from St. Laurent Shopping centre and there are lots of restaurants close by. Tripadvisor reviews aren't the greatest but we didn't find it as bad as some people on there are describing it.

We also looked at staying at the Hampton Inn and probably would have stayed there except the pool area was undergoing renovations during the time that we were there. It think their rates were in that $130 range. We drove by the hotel and it looked like a really nice place. My brother has stayed there before and was quite happy with it. Tripadvisor reviews have it rated #5 in Ottawa. We also might have stayed at the BW Victoria Park but a pool is pretty high on our list - especially in the summer - and they don't have one.

There are so many choice in the city but finding one that met all of our criteria - pool, free parking, breakfast - kind of narrows down the choices.

Good luck on your search!

St. Laurent Blvd is quite the distance from the Museum of Civilization. I wouldn't look much further than downtown Ottawa in your search. There are a lot of good hotels there and the museum is just over the bridge. The Minto Suites Hotel is a good place for families on weekends. Larger rooms - suites - and a pool.

Your best be, however, might be the Holiday Inn Gatineau-Ottawa Plaza La Chaudiere. It's on the Quebec side, is walking distance to the museum, and has a pool as well.

Hope this helps.

One of the other mom's in our group called Minto and the rates was $255 per night plus $20 for parking.....so that's way out for me.

I didn't know about that Holiday Inn. It would be a big bonus to get in a place that we could walk back and forth to the museum. I have read a few nasty things about the BW Cartier. Any info on that?

The price for the Minto Suites Hotel may very well drop as you get closer to the date. The suites were designed, I believe, for longish stays by folks in town on business but it's popular with families on weekends, holidays and hockey tournaments. I think they like the rooms because of the separate bedrooms and full kitchens. Depending on how they do with booking the business crowd, they may offer deals for weekends.

As far as the Best Western Cartier, I've only seen it from the outside. From there it doesn't look like much. But I can't comment on the rooms.

I have been in the Holiday Inn for a few meetings and conferences and have seen one of the bedrooms. It's a nice place; I wouldn't hesitate at all to stay there. And the neighbourhood is a smidge quieter than that around the Best Western.

You should check the Minto Suites in Ottawa. I've stayed there a couple of times in the past and is very nice. They have an inside pool, gym and the rooms are very nice with full kitchens and they are not very expensive.

Do NOT stay at the Chimo Inn. We stayed there 3 years ago and our car was broken into and the hotel was no help at all. It isn't in a good neighbourhood either I found out later from a friend who lived in Ottawa. It isn't anywhere near downtown Ottawa either.

We stayed at the Minto Suites this year when we went to Ottawa and it was awesome! We were there for Canada Day (actually that is the only time we go to Ottawa is on Canada Day...nothing like it) and we stayed 3 nights for around $500 so it was a little more than what you are looking at spending but the pool is beautiful, rooms are roomy and had a kitchenette too.

I would have to agree that the Chimo is in a dodgy part of Ottawa. Have you tried the Delta on Queen St. in Ottawa? I've stayed there a few times, some of the rooms are better than others. The location is good, not far from the Museum of Civilization, of course you have to drive over one of our marvellous bridges to get there!

If you're open to driving 15-20 minutes to the event, try the Travelodge on Carling. It's a bit out of the way but it's close to the 417 and it has (I think) the largest indoor water play area in the city.

Not really an option...we will be back and forth a lot from the competition. Plus, we will want to do a few things in the downtown area if time permits.

Thanks though.

It sounds good but as I mentioned one of my friends called and the rate is $255 per night. That is rather far out of my price range.

With priceline you should be able to snag a room at the Westin or Fairmont I think. My friends got the Westin Ottawa for 110/nt. Its beautiful and attached to the mall and right in the Market area.

Great idea...I forget about priceline when I arrange these trips.

We have also stayed at Embassy Suites in downtown Ottawa. It was very roomy suite with full kitchen. It did need some updating with the curtains and bedspread but who really cares about that. The only issue I did have was the parking was horrible. Not enough parking and my van got stuck in the underground parking. This past year, I tried to get a room at Cartier Place but it was all booked up when I went to book it. It looked nice.

We've done this competition before. I would just stay at the Sheridan. It's super close and you know how important that is for dance competitions. I thought about trying priceline or something to get a better deal but when it comes down to it-the kids want to stay close to their team mates because that's what makes it the most fun for them. I'll PM you with our dance studio's name so maybe we can have our own dismeet while down there. My 12 year old DS, my 10 year DD and myself are dancing in the competition.
