Going to Hilton head but need help with accommodations in Savannah Georgia prior

hi we're going to be flying into Savannah Georgia however we have a wedding to attend near Charlotte North Carolina. The next day after the wedding we're heading back down to disney's Hilton head for the next 3 evenings.

Since we've never been to Savannah Georgia before we were thinking of spending that first night near the airport area before heading up to Charlotte the next day. Could someone please suggest a nice moderate priced hotel and my husband and I love trying restaurants that the locals like as well.
However, if the area is not safe my husband and I wouldn't mind driving one hour towards Charlotte North Carolina after landing at the airport then if someone knows of a hotel in that area and a restaurant, any information you could give us would be greatly appreciated! We are really looking forward to our first stay at Disney's Hilton head can't wait!

I have had good success with downtown hotels and Hotwire. For example, I am staying in Savannah next month for a night before moving to HH and got a 4 star with great reviews for $98. There are lots of great restaurants in the area.

I'm not an expert in area crime rates but it is a nice, historic district. Many people/tourists are out and about in the evening and I have felt comfortable during my previous visits.

we usually stay @ Embassy Suites right off of I95, near the airport. It seems very safe. We like it a lot. It is not near the historic area.

We stayed overnight in Savannah the last time we drove to FL. We needed to stay someplace that would count for our Starwood account to keep our Star points active so we stayed at the Sheraton. It is not near the airport but is not far from the bridge, on the edge of the historic district and about a 5-10 min. walk to River St. and Paula Deen's restaurant etc. The immediate neighborhood heading toward the historic district was fine but I think it deteriorated rapidly heading in the other direction. We were only there 1 night and it was fine.

The area near the Savannah airport includes many of the national chains. Most of the hotels are 5 or so years old so not really out of date. The area is as safe as any area off the highway with marriott, Hilton, or Sheraton chain hotels.
