Eat a roach, be first in line at Six Flags in Gurnee

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

GURNEE — Why wait in line when you can just eat a cockroach?

That's the question Six Flags Great America is asking its thrill seekers during its Halloween-themed FrightFest. The amusement park is daring customers to eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach in exchange for unlimited line-jumping privileges.

The promotion, which has Lake County Health Department officials shaking their heads, starts Oct. 7.

Anyone who chows down the entire 2- to 3-inch horned cockroach gets a pass for four people to cut to the front of ride lines through Oct. 29.

Park officials insist it's safe to eat the crunchy critters, but health officials are cautioning participants.

Consuming live roaches might increase risks of gastrointestinal illness and allergies, according to Bill Mays, Lake County Health Department's community health director.

Cockroach eaters will have to sign waivers and still pay admission fees, said Six Flags spokesman James Taylor.

The bug buffet continues with a cooked roach eating contest Oct. 13 — Friday, Oct. 13.

Taylor says he's hoping someone can beat the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records feat in which a British man downed 36 cockroaches.

``I've heard people say, 'Wow,' 'Ew,' a lot of one-worders,'' Taylor said. ``A lot have said that they wouldn't eat a cockroach, but they sure would like to see someone else do it.''

I listened to a rep from Six Flags yesterday on WGN radio and you only get to cut in line once for each bug you eat. It definitely is not worth it!!!! And, how disgusting!!!!

I'd do it for unlimited line jumping at WDW! lol. I don't think it would be worth if for Six Flags! lol.

I'll choose FastPass over RoachPass anyday. And Im sure Six Flags didn't even pay for the cockroaches, they just gathered them from their own park.

I'm with you on that one! I have to say I kind of feel sorry for the bugs...what a way to go. I guess they know what it's like at rope drop in Fantasyland now, with the Dumbo stampede, people take no prisoners to get on a ride first!

We went to Lake George last month to six flags. The kids got a cotton candy and it was loaded with ants.

So typical of them. We live right down the road, and we've been to Six Flags perhaps four times in the last 15 years. And we love amusement parks!

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches - Tastes like chicken nuggets!

No seriously I could never eat one of those. When I come across Fear Factor, all of the physical challenges look fun but as soon as they start with the bugs and gross stuff to eat, I've got to turn the channel. YUK! :scared:

I used to go to that park as a kid back when it was a Marriot's Great Adventure.

Didn't someone find half a roach in their salad at Wolfgang Pucks lately? Wonder if they got a free fastpass? :rotfl:

Yeah I guess Six Flags didn't do so well with their "Flashpass" this year. They wanted you to pay for the priveledge of 5 front of the line passes, I believe the price was something like $11.95 or $14.95.

The whole Six Flags company is doing so poorly, the park that is nearest to us is closing a month early, closed many of their rides (including coasters & water rides) a month or two ago and charged $10.00 a day to park.

Like DH & I always say "its definitely not Disney World!"

Um, it was never called Marriot's Great Adventure. . . :confused3 When it first opened, it was Marriott's Great America. Then Six Flags bought it up and changed it to Six Flags Great America.

Great America lets everyone line jump, no matter if they bought a Speedpass or ate a cockroach.

However, I noticed they did a better job this summer. The characters all had new costumes and the customer service was much improved. They picked our family to ride on the trolley in the little parade they have. Kids got to do a private meet n'greet w/the comic book characters after and were given free ant-free cotton candy and balloons, so that was ok. But nowhere close to Disney!!!!

must be the "Year of a Million Nightmares" over there. It's a smart idea for cleaning up the park, though.

amen :rotfl:

I heard this on the radio and it is truely disgusting. I do feel bad for the bugs. They must be importing the ones to eat -- if they would get away there would be an even more disgusting problem at 6 Flags!!

PS to "i<3Disney": GO HOKIES - YEA!!!!

I am really into roller coasters and love Six Flags! For linecutting, I would definetly do this! Lines at Six Flags can get insane!
