Go ahead and laugh - can I place my mini Keurig coffee maker in my checked luggage?

Hey all travel experts!

My husband and I want to take our mini Keurig and leave it in our owner's locker for future trips. I was going to carry it on (in a cute little travel bag) but have space in one of my checked bags for it. I don't see any reason why I can't check it (it doesn't have any glass parts and doesn't travel with any water stored it). Does anyone else?

There wouldn't be any problem packing this in a checked bag.

There should be no problem checking it. I would probably carry it on if you could since it may not be in your bag when you get to FL. Since they are allowed to check any bag at any time there have been numerous stories on the news here about people having things stolen from their luggage. We only put clothes and toiletries in our luggage now.

The only concern that I'd have is the potential for damage to the machine in transit. That there's no glass parts is a plus but consider how it was packed in the box when you bought it - and baggage handlers aren't as careful with your luggage as a shipper is when that Keurig machine was shipped from Massachusetts or wherever they make those brewers. I don't blame you for wanting to take it with you but I'd carry it on if it were me. But, if you do end up putting in your checked back, pack it carefully - maybe in a lot of bubble wrap if you don't have the original packaging.

Well, come on - you said we could laugh!!!! Anyway, you should have no problem. Just, as PP said, wrap it really well to prevent damage. If you still have the box and all the inserts (and room in your suitcase), even better.

The list of prohibited carry-on items is fairly lengthy but there's not one electrical kitchen appliance listed. You can reassure your husband by going to the list at the www.tsa.gov/travelers website and selecting the Prohibited Items link.

On our flight home in Aug. a couple carried their crockpot onto the plane. It was in the box and they just put it up in the overhead bin. Unless it is specifically prohibited I don't think you should have a problem. You could always call the airline and ask.

Thanks for the link! And thanks for the crockpot story!! We bought the travel tote for the mini keurig so it is reasonably protected and should be ok in the overhear bins.

I'm now leaning towards carrying it on (I'm worried it will "disappear" from my checked baggage): my husband says I'm only a bit of a worrier.

While I think that you'd be just fine with it in your checked flights - my experience has been some 50+ round trip flights inside and outside of the US without anything ever taken from my luggage - but I think that you're more likely to get it there in better shape by taking it as your carry-on item.

fyi, did u know the onsite hotels @ Universal have them in the rooms along with lots of the coffees from which to choosesure wish the mouse would follow suit anything would be an improvement!

I have no advice/suggestions, but my DH missed our Keurig so much when we were in Disney. We fly southwest mainly so no baggage fees, but if they ever do start charging fees we will be going the owner's locker route and a mini Keurig will definitley be one of the items in there

We leave for the world next weekend, if you are there expect me to show up early with my coffee mug in hand. Much improvement to the coffee in the rooms.
