Gluten-Free? Interesting Article...

I'm not changing anything based on an article with statements like
Almost half of all celiac patients don’t get better on a wheat, rye, and barley free diet.

I have NEVER seen any such research. They offer zero documentation to support such an inflamatory (pun not intended LOL) claim. What is the basis of a claim like that? Is it referring to the high number of celiacs who have additional intollerances or comorbid conditions? How does that translate to corn gluten having the same effect as wheat/rye/barley gluten?

Meh, articles like that don't really phase me much. Yes, corn does contain corn gluten. But gliaden is that nasty protein that has been shown difficult to digest and damaging to the intestine. Heck, rice has rice gluten and I can tell you from my experience that rice is perhaps the only thing that soothes my gut when I have a gluten reaction. It sounds like this article jumped the gun a bit. Though I do agree that GMO corn isn't the best thing for you, I doubt it does the same damage that wheat, rye, barley gluten does.

Also, I'm a little leary of articles that state info. from a study or journal without adding in the link to the said study or journal. I take it with a grain of salt. There seems to be a great dislike of any kind of grain right now so it's not surprising to hear something like this regarding corn.

And like clanmcculloch said, I have an issue with the article when it states that 1/2 of all celiacs on a GF diet don't get better. Where is he getting that statistic from? When celiacs go GF, they may initially have intolerances to dairy, nightshades or other foods. This seems to clear up as your intestines heal. I know it did for me at least.

The gluten protein that causes the reaction in celiacs and gluten-sensitive allergies is actually a byproduct of glutenin and gliadin combining with water-- proteins that are specific to wheat/barley/etc. Corn has similar proteins, but are not the same makeup as glutenin or gliadin, so you should actually be safe with corn. Unless, of course, your body has problems with most proteins-- since I guess it isn't completely out of the question.

I might be snobbish for thinking this, but no way in heck am I trusting what a DC (doctor of Chiropractic medicine) has to say about GI issues/internal medicine. Since when does treating back pain qualify you to make decisions like this? Because you're a certified nutritionist? Sorry "Dr" Peter Osborne, your list of 'consider the following about corn' is laughable. Corn (one of the oldest grains) being new to the human genome? ***?!? Fish not jumping into a cornfield is a reason for humans to not eat it? Do humans jump into ponds and sift plankton through their gills? Facepalm.

Sorry for the rant... just remember to take stuff like this with a grain of salt. Just because a website or two can claim it, doesn't make it true or false.

There's a docudrama currently available on Netflix instant called "King Corn". It's a bit of an eye opener. Fictional yes, but based on fact.
