Any other Apraxic parents out there received DAS for their children?

My daughter is 8 and doesn't really 'show' that she is disabled, but does still have issues with loud noises and crowds and will definitely need 'quiet time' throughout the day to recover. Her global apraxia means her stamina is not the same as normal children but I know that she would rather fall down exhausted rather than ride in a stroller or wheel chair through the parks.

Apraxic parent advice?

Hello! I am familiar with apraxia of speech. In my experience with my DD, I don't see that her speech-related difficulties specifically would qualify her for DAS. Regarding stamina, unfortunately the preferred accommodation does not have to be DAS and Disney will offer a wheelchair (or stroller-as-wheelchair depending on the child's age) since nearly all queues are mainstreamed. If loud noises are an issue, have you tried Peltor earmuffs? Many children find that helpful in the extremely stimulating environment at WDW.

However if your child has some other sensory issues, you should explain those needs to Guest Relations and see if they offer the DAS. I wouldn't expect CMs to understand the diagnosis "Apraxia" and how that impacts your child, you'll have to use generally terms to explain how she is impacted in a standard queue environment. DAS is not diagnosis-based, so the actual diagnosis does not matter.

Enjoy your vacation!

My son also has apraxia of speech and would not qualify based on that. He also has CP and a very severe airway diagnoses which limits his ability to walk and breathe at the same time. We use the stroller as a wheelchair option. If she won't use the stroller, you may just have to slow down the touring pace. We use headphones to reduce noise and we also allow the stroller to be a "bubble" of sorts to help him. If she has other concerns, which would require her to need an alternative waiting location, then, you would be considered for the DAS. Have a great vacation.
