girls..what kind of hat do you wear?

My brother is undergoing his second surgery for skin cancer on the top of his head. :scared1: I and DH are, ahem, maniacal about these things.

My DH wears what we call an "australian" in my family - the canvas fedora with a mesh roof. And I wear either my "ugly" hat (a crushable omni-shade Columbia boonie) or my "old lady gardner hat" (a paper-straw hat with a HUUUGGGGEEE brim).

Yes, a bit hotter and sometimes unwieldy, but we both think of my brother and don't complain.

I usually weat a baseball style cap made out of breathable material. Yesterday, though, I bought a hat from a Columbia Outlet Stor that I really like. It is a bucket style hat that will cover my ears and somewhat shield my face. And it looks fairly cute.

A baseball hat tends to work well because if you put your hair up, there is less chance of you losing it on a ride :)
But I usually put it in my shirt anyway

I have a great visor that I absolutely love. The best thing about it is that the band is held together with Velcro - that means that I can unhook the band and loop it through the strap of my purse, fanny pack, or backpack really easily when I'm not wearing it.

It looks like it's made out of a straw-type material, but it's really some type of fabric. Has a nice big brim to shield my face. You can also loosen or tighten the band as needed (I hate those visors that aren't adjustable - some are very tight - I must have a big head!). Cost around $25 at a local Washington State store called Fred Meyer, and came in several colors.

'This is exactly what I was thinking. Doesnt a hat make you feel even hotter?

A hat is not meant to cool you down. A hat is meant to protect your head and face from the sun. Burned parts and headaches and sunstroke and skin cancer happen when you don't cover your head.

Believe me, when you see your face with a dime-sized hole in it during a Moh's surgery, you will not be happy that you "were too hot to wear a hat". 12 yrs on, I've had no more cancers. The plastic surgeon did a fabu job and you can't tell that I ever had that much skin missing from my cheek. But I still have to answer loads of questions every time I fill in a life insurance form, and I still have to go in once a year for an all-over body check.

All b/c I didn't wear enough sunscreen and a hat.

I wear bandanas and scarves. My hair is very thin and I burn easily on my scalp, so I NEED to have it covered during the sunny parts of the day. (Although after 5pm or so, I'm usually okay to go uncovered.)

All the summer scarves work great tied around your head like a very wide headband that protects your head. Let's see if I can find some pictures of what I'm talking about.....

And when wearing a nice scarf as your head covering, you can easily go into a restaurant for dinner without having horrible hat hair...

I just bought me a bandana a buck an visors 2 for 5 at walfart CUTE an disney doesn't usually mix.

I've tried wearing a hat and it's way too hot, I burn up. So no more hats for me.

I find that a tight fitted hat makes me hot unless I have my hair off my neck (I have long thick hair). A looser hat made with a breathable material designed for air flow will help keep me cooler because it keeps the sun off my head which is something that heats me up.
