It sounds like the plot of a made-for-TV movie. An 11-year old girl is kidnapped on her way to a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Her stepfather, who sees the girl pulled into a car, gives chase on a bike but of course can't catch the car. Her family gives her up for lost and likely dead. Then, 18 years later, she walks into a police station in the San Francisco Bay area.

It's downright incredible. Yet this is what California law enforcement officials are saying happened in the case of Jaycee Lee Dugard.

NPR's Ina Jaffe reported the following:
Jaycee Dugard was on her way to school in South Lake Tahoe On June 10, 1991, when she was pulled into a gray sedan occupied by a man and a woman, according to witnesses at the time. They heard her scream, the car sped away, and she was never found, despite a nationwide search.
Dugard's mother, and a sister she has never met, have flown to Northern California to meet her. The El Dorado County Sheriff's department, says DNA tests are being conducted. Lt. Les Lovell said "We are very confident at this point in time that it is her." He said that two people are in custody in connection with the case but gave no details.
An Associated Press story has more details:
Jimmie Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, said FBI and El Dorado sheriff's deputies arrested two suspects Wednesday night. They were being held in the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez.
Lee said the two were being held for investigation of several charges, including kidnapping, but he could not elaborate.
Law enforcement sources said authorities were also searching a home in Antioch.
Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, said the news was like winning the lottery.
"To have this happen where we get her back alive, and where she remembers things from the past, and to have people in custody is a triple win," he told The Sacramento Bee.
Witnesses reported that a vehicle with two people drove up to Dugard and abducted her while her stepfather was watching on June 10, 1991, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release Thursday.
In media reports at the time, the girl's stepfather said he heard Jaycee scream then jumped on a bicycle and frantically pedaled after the car in a failed effort to follow it up a hill. Hethen turned around and screamed at neighbors to call 911.
The case attracted national attention and was featured on TV's "America's Most Wanted," which broadcast a composite drawing of a suspect seen in the car.

I remember this case! We had several girl abductions back then. Polly Klaas was one of them found dead. Ilene Mischeloff is one who is still missing. So hard for the families!

I'm curious what the story is with Jaycee. Apparently she has two children presumably fathered by her captor.

Our justice systems isn't designed to properly take care of evil like this. The prosecutor and attorney's responsible for letting this animal back out on the street should have a hard time sleeping.

What really sad, was the two children she had with that monster, and 11 year old and 15 year old. That would mean she had her first at 14! How terrifying!

Her stepfather was interviewed on a local station. He said that he was under suspicion of doing something to her up until yesterday, and his marriage to her mother didn't survive the turmoil.

This is so sad. I'm glad she's alive though.

What an incredible story. The poor girl/now woman must have had Stockholm Syndrome & emotionally battered woman syndrome all this time. And those poor kids. They haven't been properly socialized in all this time. They've never even lived in a place with 4 real walls, and one that wasn't a prison to them. :sad1: It will be a long, long adjustment period for all of them. I'm glad they are safe now.

This is an abducted childs parent's best dream.

2 sisters, very close friends of mine (I was supposed to be at their house when it happened) were kidnapped in 1974, when they were 6 and 8 years old. After it was obvious they weren't coming home immediately, their mom kept saying "they're (insert key age) now, they can get away and come home". Sadly, all the evidence shows they were probably murdered almost immediately, but still no bodies.

:sad2::sad2:

I'm glad that she is alive. What a horrible story. :sad2::sad2:

It is a horrible story and she went through a lot (and tinatark, I'm sorry about your story as well.) However, I still see it as a miracle that she's still alive and able to be reunited with her family now.

Good grief anyone see the piece on the TODAY show. :scared1:

The kidnapper believes he did something good. It is truly sick.

He was arrested for this before and jailed for 11yrs. Then he raped and got out of jail again! And then he did this.

SICKO...words cannot describe what should happen to him.:sad2:

So glad for her family that she was found alive. I can't imagine the joy that they must be feeling. She has such a long road of recovery ahead of her. I can't imagine the horrible things that she must of endured for the past 18 years.

18 years of that. Oh that poor girl. It's really unbelievable. What a sick sick man.

I completely agree...I wonder if there are studies or stats on all the kidnapping cases/abductions/child murders which indicate the perpetrator had been in troublr prior. I mean how many times does this have to happen before stricter laws are put in to place keeping these animals behind bars?

And really, people, especially on the CB, wonder why some parents are so overprotective and want their child to have cell phones, etc.

I hate to think about what this poor girl endured all those years and then to have 2 children by him?:sad2:

He probably had relations with the two kids by now. How sick. He could harvest his own victims.

TC:cool1:

I just read about this. What a mix of emotions, issues and...oh my gosh...where to start...

Bless that girl, her children and the family.

According to him those kids cured him. He claims to not have laid a finger on them.:sad2:

A convicted rapist who fathered two children by a girl he kidnapped when she was 11 has claimed his life is 'the most powerful heart-warming story'.
Phillip Garrido, who abducted Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and kept her hidden in his backyard as a sex slave, admitted his behaviour was at first 'disgusting'.

But in a bizarre, rambling phone interview from inside a Californian prison, he claims his life completely changed when she had the first of their two children.
The 58-year-old boasted 'wait until you hear the story of what took place at this house' and insisted the world would be amazed by his rehabilitation.

'In the end, this is going to be a powerful, heartwarming story. My life has been straightened out,' the sex offender said.

Here is his brother talking about him. His brother calls him a fruitcake.

They were saying on the news that neighbors had called about him having kids in his back yard and told them that something just wasn't right at his house. The police told them there was nothing they could do about it.

I read that within the past few years, neighbors had called the authorities to report that this man (whom they knew to be a registered sex offender not allowed to have contact with children) had children walking around in his backyard. The neighbors spotted the kids, called and reported it, but it seems nothing was done.

WTH?!?!?!?!?!?! :confused3 You have a registered sex offender with a history of kidnapping, who is reported to have children on his property, and you don't search every inch of it and quiz every neighbor? Someone dropped the ball in the worst way. Yes, he had it somewhat hidden, but if the neighbors saw it, the police could have seen it....perhaps from the reporting neighbor's house. :headache:
